Health24.com | For teens, weight-loss surgery may not bring emotional gains
Following weight-loss surgery, teens may see some aspects of their health improve, but overall mental health isn’t likely to budge, a new study suggests.
In the five years after gastric bypass surgery, teens experienced small gains in self-esteem and some improvement in binge-eating, but no sizable boost in overall mood, researchers found.
Mental health problems
“The transition from adolescence to young adulthood is a vulnerable time, not least in adolescents with severe obesity,” said study author Kajsa Jarvholm, from Skane University Hospital in Sweden. “Our results provide a complex picture, but what’s safe to say is that weight-loss surgery does not seem to improve general mental health.”
For the study, researchers collected data on 161 obese Swedish teens, ages 13 to 18. Half had obesity surgery.
The researchers also collected data on psychiatric drugs prescribed to the teens and any specialist treatment for mental problems in the five years before and after surgery. The teens also reported any mental health problems.
Before surgery, the number of teens taking psychiatric drugs was similar between those who did and didn’t have the operation – 20% in the surgery group and 15% among the others.
Five years after surgery, the number of teens taking psychiatric drugs increased in both groups. An increase in use of specialist mental-health care was also seen.
Teens who had surgery were significantly more likely to have had inpatient or outpatient care for mental problems, the researchers found. But those who had surgery may be monitored more closely, which might account for the increased care.
Some limitations
Five years after surgery, teens who had the operation said they had improved self-esteem. They also reported less binge-eating, emotional eating and uncontrolled eating. Their overall mood, however, had not changed, the researchers noted.
The report was recently published in the journal The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health.
The authors highlighted some limitations to the study. For one, the surgical patients weren’t randomly chosen. Also, the severity of obesity was unequal between the two groups (the surgery group had an average BMI of 45; the non-surgery group’s average BMI was 42), and the sample size was small.
Still, “we suggest that adolescents and their caregivers should be given realistic expectations in advance of embarking on a surgical pathway,” Jarvholm said in a journal news release. Also, as teens begin treatment, long-term mental health follow-up and support should be a requirement, she added.
People living with obesity encounter weight bias and discrimination, which can negatively affect mental health, said the author of an accompanying editorial, Dr Stasia Hadjiyannakis, from the University of Ottawa in Canada. “We must advocate for and support strategies aimed at decreasing weight bias and discrimination,” she wrote.

News24.com | Ga-Rankuwa protest called off after meeting with Tshwane officials
A service delivery protest in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria, has been called off after community leaders met with Tshwane officials to voice their grievances.
The township came to a standstill on Monday morning after several major roads were blockaded with rubble and burning tyres.
Disgruntled residents took to the streets in the early hours to vent their frustrations over an alleged lack of service delivery in the area.

Residents protested over issues of drugs, crime, housing, electricity, sewerage and roads that have not been tarred or maintained.
Resident Paul Majou told News24 that issues regarding service delivery have not been addressed despite several attempts by residents to get the municipality involved.
With pleas falling on deaf ears, residents had no choice but to protest, Majou said.
“If we speak, they don’t listen but if you do something like blocking the roads and chanting, then they listen,” Majou said.

Community leaders met with Tshwane MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning Isak Pietersen on Monday.
After airing their grievances, the MMC promised to take their issues back to the mayoral committee and provide feedback on Wednesday, according to Ward 30 councillor Jabulani Rammushi, who sat in on the meeting.
In turn, community leaders promised to suspend their protest, pending the outcomes of the next meeting.

“The community was raising the issue of service delivery in Ga-Rankuwa. For quite some time we have had no service delivery from the city of Tshwane,” Rammushi said.
“MMC Pietersen noted all the things raised in the meeting and he promised that he would meet with the mayoral committee as of today.”
No arrests
News24 has reached out to the municipality for comment which will be added once received.
Earlier on Monday, News24 reported that while there was a heavy police presence in the area, very few protesters were seen, apart from a group of children manning one of the blocked roads.
The group of children were turning some motorists away while demanding a toll fee from others.
The children scolded motorists who drove around the blocked road using the sidewalks.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said there were no arrests or reports of damage to property. He said roads have since been reopened but police will continue to monitor the area.

Sport24.co.za | Slick Sharks carrying flag for transformation
Rob Houwing – Sport24 chief writer
Cape Town – The fulsome involvement of players of colour in mastermind Rassie Erasmus’s plans formed an integral part of the Springboks’ surge to World Cup glory in 2019.
It was genuinely a “people’s triumph” for the once statutorily divided country, with the Boks way more representative than they had been in earlier Webb Ellis Cup successes of 1995 and 2007.
Register your interest for the British & Irish Lions tickets in South Africa 2021
But if there were any fears that the phenomenon would lose some impetus in South Africa as a new season kicked in recently, the Sharks have instead been stirring torch-bearers just one notch down, in still important Super Rugby.
Generally, other local franchises have at very least been playing ball with transformation requirements during early 2020 activity, too, but the situation in the Sharks camp is arguably the most constructively noticeable at this point.
While the Stormers are also making decent headway in the results column – and a point ahead of their coastal rivals after two rounds – the similarly unbeaten Sharks have been turning heads not only for the easy-on-the-eye nature of their rugby but for their emphasis on black players leading the charge.
Just for one thing, there is a certain symbolism to the fact that all but five of the franchise’s 65 points thus far – encompassing a 23-15 home victory over the Bulls and memorable 42-20 away grilling of the Highlanders – have come from players of colour.
While hardly a be-all and end-all sort of yardstick (rugby is a team game, and the Sharks are currently shining as a multicultural collective) the statistic is not without some relevance: six of the seven tries on their books thus far have gone to Makazole Mapimpi (2), Aphelele Fassi (2), S’bu Nkosi and Sanele Nohamba – the lone exception is James Venter’s in Dunedin.
Meanwhile Curwin Bosch, another player from a previously disadvantaged background, has been banging over his place-kicks, whether conversions or penalties, with clinical efficiency: 12 out of 13 for a total of 30 points.
Has it perhaps gone unnoticed, too, that the Sharks – for two fixtures on the trot – have achieved the landmark of fielding start-out XVs made up by a majority (eight) of players of colour, or 53.33 percent?
While open to correction, and keeping in mind that the Stormers have already registered that achievement, this is probably the first time it has occurred for the KwaZulu-Natalians in Super Rugby.
The vast nucleus of the players in question, too, have been instrumental in carrying out, with some aplomb, the increasingly evident objective of the Sharks perking up their attacking play after many years (a couple of decades, even) saddled with a reputation primarily as rugged “bashers” of Super Rugby.
Although five players of colour have made up their punch-laden starting backline recently – and Nohamba already a renowned “bomb-squader” off the bench who will push ever more assertively to start at scrumhalf – the three black members of the pack are renowned skills factors as well.
Sikhumbuzo Notshe, since his off-season switch from Newlands, may finally be delivering on his huge potential as a roaming, hot-stepping loose forward, lock Hyron Andrews has a lean build that naturally aids mobility requirements, and Ox Nche – while perhaps still a little rough-edged in scrumming terms – is one of the most active loose-head props in general play that you will find in the competition.
The combination of an upped tally of poster figures from previously disadvantaged communities and the new, more adventure-laden game-plan by coach Sean Everitt and company, should gradually bear some fruit in the Sharks’ quest to not only get a formerly staunch chunk of their faithful back to Kings Park, but also lure in people perhaps not automatically seduced by rugby before.
A fairly pronounced, upward trajectory in terms of making their team more representative is virtually impossible to dispute if you do a comparative study with the last two seasons.
When the Sharks played their last match of 2019 – the surrendered quarter-final against the Brumbies in Canberra – their starting line-up had six players of colour, or 40 percent (Mzamo Majola, Andrews, Mapimpi, Lukhanyo Am, Nkosi and Bosch), while the closing fixture of 2018 saw them field four, or 26.66 percent (Lwazi Mvovo, Am, Nkosi and Bosch).
Progress? Unmistakable …

News24.com | R114m PowerBall winner will trade backroom in Soweto for her own house and flashy car
The winner of the R114m PowerBall jackpot is a 35-year-old woman from Soweto.
According to Ithuba, which operates South Africa’s lotteries, the occasional Lottery player said she decided to try her luck when she saw other people queuing to buy tickets.
“On my way from work, I saw a long queue of people with bet slips and I knew they must be pursuing something big, even though I had no idea of what the jackpot prize was. I became curious and searched for some coins in my bag to see if I could also play,” said the winner.
The winner, who manually selected her numbers, spent only R5 on her winning ticket that she bought at Victor and Son’s Café in Roodepoort in western Johannesburg.
Speaking to Ithuba, the winner said she was renting a backroom in Soweto. “Sometimes, I could not always afford rent so my brother would always assist me.”
The blue-collar worker said she had yearned to be fully involved in her children’s everyday life for years.
“My four children have been staying with my mother… and I have never been able to spend as much time with them as I wished since I had to work in Johannesburg,” she said.
“I am mostly grateful that this money will give me an opportunity to raise my children, to be able to take them to school and have the pleasure of preparing a scrumptious meal that they can enjoy when they get back from school, something that I’ve been wishing for, for a long time.”
The winner received trauma counselling and financial advice, which Ithuba offers to winners of R50 000 and more for free.
“Judging by the amount of time the winner spent with both the psychologist and the financial adviser, we are confident that she will make sound financial decisions that will secure her family’s future for generations to come,” said Busisiwe Msizi, head of corporate relations at Ithuba.
‘This bed is really mine?’
Ithuba treated the winner to a five-star hotel stay in Gauteng.
“The winner was in complete disbelief when she saw her room. She said in IsiZulu: ‘Umbhede wami ngempela lona, omkhulu kangaka!’ (which means: ‘This bed is really mine? As big as it is.’),” said Msizi.
The winner said in addition to buying her own house, she wanted to build her mother a big house to live comfortably. She would also like to buy herself a stylish car but first needed to learn how to drive and obtain her driver’s licence as soon as possible.
“I can’t wait to drive past my ex-boyfriend in my new car. He will probably faint when he sees me waving at him. He broke up with me because I was broke and didn’t have a fancy job,” she said jokingly.
She will not return to her job and said her new life had begun.
This PowerBall jackpot had rolled over 19 times before being won. It is the sixth highest jackpot ever won in the history of the South African National Lottery, the highest being R232m in February 2019.
