Cape Town – Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis says that he is opposed to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) proposal to cut Test matches from five days to four.
It is widely known that the ICC could decide to shorten the length of Test matches from 2023 onwards and Cricket South Africa (CSA) in a press release on Tuesday stated that they were in full support the move.

However, Du Plessis had other opinions on the matter calling for Test cricket matches to remain five days long.
“My opinion is that I’m a fan of Test cricket going on for five days,” Du Plessis told reporters in Cape Town after his side had lost the second Test to England.
“The great draws of the game have gone to five days. I understand that a lot of money is being burned on the fifth day, because so many Test matches are not going five days. There’ll always be an opinion on both and people will sit 50/50 on it.
“I’m still a purest of the game because I’ve been a part of some great draws that have gone five days. And today is no different, there would definitely not have been a result (in Cape Town) on four days on this wicket,” said Du Plessis.
“Yes, not many matches go on to five days. When you’ve got a shattered Ben Stokes running in towards the end of the day after a long spell and we’re just trying to survive that, for me, is what makes the extra day so special.”
England captain Root noted his displeasure at the ICC proposal after England won on Day 5 of the second Test in Cape Town by 189 runs.
“I like five-day Test cricket, I might get in trouble for that,” said Root on Tuesday.
The ICC approved South Africa to host a once off four-day Test match against Zimbabwe in 2017, which the Proteas won.
Meanwhile, Indian skipper Virat Kohli has also opposed to the notion of four-day Test matches, saying that it isn’t “fair to the purest format of the game”.
A contractor was killed, and three others injured when a building under construction collapsed on them in Benoni, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services said on Tuesday.
Emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said a rescue team and paramedics had rushed to the scene on the corner of Liverpool and Bolton roads on Monday afternoon.
They found bystanders had helped the survivors from the collapsed building.
“As per information on the scene, the building was a new multi-storey structure. It was on its third-floor level already. It is alleged that the four employees were removing the supporting structures prior to the collapse,” said Ntladi.
The three contractors, who were seriously injured, were transported to hospital.
The body of the fourth, a man believed to be in his early fifties, was removed from the scene by forensic pathologists.
The scene was handed over to police for further investigation.

Exercise may do more than build body strength: New research shows it might also keep brain cells in shape.
According to the study, exercise helps maintain the brain’s gray matter, which is linked to various skills and thinking abilities. So, keeping your gray matter intact may help prevent thinking declines, the German researchers explained.
The report was published online in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
“This [study] provides indirect evidence that aerobic exercise can have a positive impact on cognitive function in addition to physical conditioning,” said Dr. Ronald Petersen, a Mayo Clinic neurologist.
“Another important feature of the study is that these results may apply to older adults, as well. There is good evidence for the value of exercise in midlife, but it is encouraging that there can be positive effects on the brain in later life as well,” said Petersen, who co-authored an editorial that accompanied the report.
The German researchers, led by Katharina Wittfeld, followed more than 2 000 adults in northeastern Germany from 1997 through 2012. Over the study period, fitness was measured and participants underwent MRI brain scans.
Although the study found an association between exercise and brain health, it couldn’t prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
According to Mayo Clinic experts, moderate and regular exercise – about 150 minutes per week – is recommended. Good fitness also involves:

The family of Alfred Nzo District Executive Mayor Sixolile Mehlomakhulu has accused him of vandalising their family home and physically attacking family members, however, the mayor has opened a case of his own.
In a video posted on Twitter by Mehlomakhulu’s nephew, Xola Mehlomakhulu, the mayor is seen wielding two large sticks amid a scuffle with another family member.
The family had since opened a case of grievous bodily harm with the police, according to Xola.
He said Mehlomakhulu had entered the family home in the Eastern Cape on Sunday “out of the blue” and started removing and breaking objects in the house.
“My uncle came in and just said he bought the ceilings in the house, so they started removing the ceiling, they removed the solar panel and just started vandalising the house,” Xola added.
On Monday, Mehlomakhulu once again returned to the house.
“He took a stick and started hitting my uncle. The video was taken then.”
Xola said once the executive mayor realised he was being filmed, he stole the phone and ran away.
He added the motive behind the altercation was unclear.
“He just came inside and started attacking them and said they were not welcome there … he has been terrorising my family,” Xola said.
‘Mayor not there to fight with anyone’
The mayor’s municipal spokesperson referred questions to family spokesperson Msawenkosi Mehlomakhulu who said the executive mayor was, in fact, not there to fight with anyone.
He added Mehlomakhulu was attacked and had to run away.
Both parties have opened cases with the police.
ANC regional secretary Vukile Mhlelembana said he could not comment on the video as he did not know the context behind it.
He added he had spoken to the executive mayor but had not yet spoken to the family.
“If that happened … we condemn it.”
Mhlelembana added the provincial ANC would decide on a way forward once it had the full story.
Xola said the family had given up on the ANC taking any action as the issue had been going on for years.
Previously, the party had met with the family to act as a mediator.
Xola, however, said this was not enough.
“The family has just lost confidence in the ANC … we’ve been saying this needs more attention,” he added.
