An eThekwini Metro Police constable is the prime suspect in the murder of his ex-girlfriend, 29-year-old Zinhle Muthwa.
Constable Ndumiso Khumalo, 30, who is attached to the City’s multi-operational response unit, appeared in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Kara said.
She said he faced charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.
He is still in custody and will return to court on January 13, when he intends to apply for his release on bail.
Outside the court, a host of supporters were present, including some from the IFP and ANC.
IFP Women’s Brigade chairperson Thokozile Gumede said more had to be done to curb gender-based violence.
“We are here to support the family. Enough is enough. We cannot go on anymore. We have done all we could. We have made campaigns and marches. We need to find a solution, something that will be a permanent solution.”
Gone missing
Muthwa’s bruised body was found in Umbumbulu on New Year’s Day with a gunshot wound to the head. Her body was recovered at Ndaya Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, News24 previously reported. She had head injuries and multiple bruises.
Her parents positively identified her body on Thursday.
Media reports indicated that Muthwa had initially gone missing after someone in a white car picked her up in New Germany.
Umbumbulu detectives, led by their station commander, followed up on information regarding Khumalo’s involvement in the murder and later arrested him.
They recovered a firearm which was believed to have been used in the murder.
Muthwa’s initial disappearance sparked an outcry on social media with fears of gender-based violence in the new year.
Protests against gender-based violence reached boiling point during the #AmINext movement in mid-2019.

Vitamin D deficiency is linked with poor muscle health in older adults, a new study finds. Maintaining muscle health helps seniors maintain their independence, mobility and quality of life. It also lowers their risk of falls and frailty.
Researchers looked at more than 4,100 people, aged 60 and older, in England. About 4 in 10 with vitamin D deficiency had muscle weakness – twice the level found among those who had adequate vitamin D levels.
Impaired muscle performance was three times more common among those with vitamin D deficiency (25.2%) than those with adequate vitamin D (7.9%).
Further analysis showed that vitamin D deficiency significantly increased the odds of impaired muscle strength and performance.
The study also confirmed the benefits of exercise. Participants who got regular moderate physical activity were much less likely to have poor muscle strength and physical performance, according to the researchers at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland.
“Maintaining muscle function is incredibly important, and often overlooked, in promoting healthy aging,” said researcher Maria O’Sullivan, an associate professor in nutrition. “Addressing this through multimodal approaches that incorporate physical activity, reversing vitamin D deficiency and other modifiable diet and lifestyle components require further investigation.”
First author Niamh Aspell, who did her doctoral studies at Trinity, said the findings support the need for public health strategies to eliminate vitamin D deficiency in older people.
“Future research, however, should identify and focus on older adults with vitamin D deficiency and aim to better understand if reversing this deficiency improves skeletal muscle function,” she said in a college news release.
Study co-author Eamon Laird, a research fellow at Trinity, said Finland is among countries that have all but eliminated deficiency in the population by fortifying food with vitamin D. “Such a policy could similarly be implemented in the UK and Ireland for older populations,” he said.
The findings were recently published in the journal Clinical Interventions in Ageing.

Cape Town – In the build-up to the second Test against England at Newlands, Proteas captain Faf du Plessis made the joke of referring to the iconic South African venue as the ‘Home of Cricket’.
It went down a treat with the touring journalists.
There is no doubt that Newlands, with its blue skies and mountain views, has earned a reputation as one of the world’s most picturesque cricket venues and it ranks high up the list for many international players, past and present.
It has also become South Africa’s only option for their New Year’s Test, with Cape Town consistently delivering packed out crowds for the weekend.
The Proteas have a superb record at Newlands, having lost just one of their last 18 Tests at venue.
Things are not going well for them currently, however, and they will have to do something seriously special to avoid defeat against Joe Root’s men over the next two days.
While all of the first three days of the Test were sold out, there were empty seats visible on Monday.
One thing that has remained consistent, however, is the fact that there has been more English support since day one.
On Monday, Sport24’s Lloyd Burnard spent some time walking around the ground and capturing the English in full voice.

It might be the first Monday back at work for many, but Newlands is still relatively full, even if there are more English fans than South Africans ?? pic.twitter.com/OwHIa4L1Ii
