Cape Town – England’s selectors have named a 17-strong squad for the four-match Test series against South Africa starting at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Boxing Day, December 26, 2019.
According to the England Cricket Board (ECB) website, three players, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood, all return to the Test set-up.
Lancashire seamer Anderson sustained a right calf tear during the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston in August.
Durham quick Wood, who along with Anderson is currently involved in a dedicated fast-bowling camp based in Cape Town, is recovering from a left knee injury and side strain sustained during the Cricket World Cup final in July. He last played Test cricket in February, where he was named player of the match in England’s last victory away from home against the West Indies in St Lucia taking six wickets in the match.
Yorkshire batsman Bairstow, currently working on his batting at the camp in Cape Town, returns to the squad having missed out on selection for the recent two-Test series in New Zealand.
Lancashire seamer, Saqib Mahmood, misses out on selection having been part of the Test tour of New Zealand.
Commenting on the selection of the squad, National Selector Ed Smith, said: “With James Anderson and Mark Wood returning to the squad, Saqib Mahmood is the unfortunate player to miss out.
“It is not predicted that Mark (Wood) will be available for selection for the earliest matches. However, he will travel with the team and continue his rehab work with the medical staff on tour. There is no exact date given for his return, but the medical team is working towards him becoming fully available for selection during the tour.
“With that in mind, and given the extended period that James and Mark have had on the sidelines due to injury, it was sensible to have a 17-man squad.
“Moeen Ali, who asked to take a break from Test cricket last summer, remains unavailable for Test selection.
“Jonny Bairstow returns to the England squad after missing out on the New Zealand tour. Jonny, Mark and James are already in South Africa on a training camp ahead of the Test tour.”
The four-match Test series forms part of the ICC World Test Championship and will be the first time in the competition that England have played away from home.
Joe Root’s team will be looking to close in on India and Australia, who are currently leading the standings.
The top two teams at the end of the two-year cycle will compete in the ICC World Test Championship final in England in June 2021.
England squad:
Joe Root (captain), James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Matthew Parkinson, Ollie Pope, Dominic Sibley, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
England Test tour of South Africa 2019/20:
December 17/18: Two-day warm-up match v South Africa Invitational XI – Willowmoore Park, Benoni
December 20-22: Three-day first-class match v South Africa ‘A’ – Willowmoore Park, Benoni
December 26-30: 1st Test – SuperSport Park, Centurion
January 3-7: 2nd Test – Newlands, Cape Town
January 16-20: 3rd Test – St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth
January 24-28: 4th Test – Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called for “drastic action” to improve the safety standards and procedures at mines, as four mine workers are trapped and feared dead in a mine in Orkney.
Rescue teams are currently on site, but it is estimated that it will take three or four days to rescue the workers due to rocks continuing to fall underground, the NUM said in a statement.
The mine workers became trapped at the Tau Lekoa mine in Orkney after “seismic activity” on Friday afternoon.
NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu confirmed the incident, saying the seismic activity took place at 12:00 on Friday.
As a result, five mine workers were trapped, although one was rescued immediately after. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, Mammburu said.

“Earlier [on Friday] the proto team was able to communicate with the four mine workers who are still trapped underground, but later they were no longer responding,” the statement reads.
NUM president Joseph Montisetse told eNCA a team was working around the clock to rescue the trapped workers. The incident has left the union “deeply worried and concerned”, he said.
“The NUM strongly believes that it’s necessary to compel the mining industry to comply with safety standards and procedures… We call on the state to hold the industry fully accountable for its failures and adopt a no-nonsense approach when it comes to mine deaths.”
Around 200 firefighters have reportedly been dismissed from the City of Johannesburg after an unauthorised strike.
The dismissal is due to an illegal strike by union Demawusa earlier this year, according to a report by eNCA.
The dismissal was confirmed to News24 by Demawusa spokesperson Dion Makhura. However, the union has received no official communication from the City, he said.
A strike in July followed accusations by firefighters that Emergency Services Management were not adhering to the National Health Act. Some of the firefighters were also reportedly forced to live in an unsafe building.
During the strike, firefighters refused to attend to emergency calls made to the Jabulani, Johannesburg Central, Ivory Park and Rosebank fire stations, citing that some of the allocated duties assigned to them as basic life support officers were in fact duties to be performed by the intermediate life support officers. The firefighters also requested around the clock escorts from the JMPD when responding to emergencies, News24 previously reported.
City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that 202 employees were dismissed for a range of charges, including gross insubordination, dereliction of duties, acting in a manner that is in breach of their employment contact or job description, acting in a manner that is unlawful, and bringing the name of the City of Johannesburg into disrepute, following an illegal strike.
“During July 2019 it came to the attention of the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services management that several of its employees … were participating in an unprotected strike,” Mulaudzi says in a statement.
The City then issued an issued an ultimatum for employees to return to work immediately, failing which they would be dismissed. However, after the strike, some firefighters did not return to work and the City obtained a court order from the Labour Court, which interdicted the striking firefighters from illegal action. In September, the City suspended 230 firefighters.
“We want to reassure our residents of the City of Johannesburg that we will continue to render effective professional emergency services at all times,” Mulaudzi adds.
“It’s a very difficult situation we find ourselves in as an organisation [and] we are doing our best to make sure that service delivery is not disrupted.”
Standby staff will be recalled if necessary, along with volunteers and overtime staff.
The dismissed firefighters have seven days to lodge an appeal.
We all know that having a good relationship with your family is important for a lot of reasons, but what if you were told that one of them was to maintain good physical health as you grow older? Well, this is a suggestion a new study published in the Journal of Family Psychology is making…
According to the study, individuals who have a strained relationship with their extended family (including mom, dad, siblings, aunts, uncles and grandparents) are more likely to develop a chronic illness than those who have a strained relationship with their intimate partner(s)s/spouse(s).

“Most often, researchers focus on romantic relationships, especially marriage, presuming they likely have more of a powerful effect on health,” said Prof. Sarah Woods, lead author of the study and assistant professor of family and community medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre, in a statement.
“Family relationships are long and emotionally intense. These are people you are connected to you forever. If you are sensitive to emotional stress, then being bathed in that stress would over time wear and tear on your body.”
To get to this conclusion, researchers looked at data from just under 3 000 individuals collected between 1995 and 2014. On three occasions over these years (between 1995 and 1996, 2004 and 2006, 2013 and 2014), the participants each rated the state of their interactions with their families and spouses.
On family, the respondents were asked questions like: “How often do members of your family criticise you?” and “How much can you rely on your family if you have a serious problem?”
On spouses, the respondents were asked questions like: “How often does your spouse or partner argue with you?” and “How much does your spouse or partner appreciate you?”
The participants’ health was measured looking at the total number of chronic conditions suffered 12 months before each of the three times their data was collected.
Through this analysis, the researchers found that there was a strong association with strained family interactions and a greater number of chronic illnesses.

“We found that family and emotional climate had a big effect on overall health, including the development or worsening of chronic conditions such as stroke and headaches over the 20-year span of midlife,” Prof. Woods said.
Interestingly, they found no significant link with intimate partner relationships and later health. This was something that “stunned” the researchers.
As alluded to earlier in the article, the researchers believe that this is the case because family relationships go on forever, versus intimate relationships which can simply end.
“The vast majority of the people in the study had living parents or siblings, thus their relationship with a spouse or intimate partner was less likely to be as long as that of their family members,” Prof. Patricia Robertson, co-author of the study, said in a statement. “Therefore, the emotional intensity of these relationships may be greater, so much so that people experience more of an effect on their health and wellbeing.”

The researchers believe that these findings are critical particularly for healthcare practitioners because they highlight the importance of considering family relationships when assessing and treating patients.
“For adults who already have a chronic condition, a negative family emotional climate may increase their poor health and, conversely, supportive family members may help improve their health outcomes,” Prof. Woods concluded.
