News24.com | UPDATE | Zikalala clarifies: 48 people positive for Covid-19 after protest at KwaSizabantu
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala monitored the level of compliance to Covid-19 protocols around Durban’s townships on Sunday.PHOTO:
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has clarified earlier comments that a church service at the KwaSizabantu Mission was attended by 2 000 people and was a so-called superspreader event.
He clarified that it was actually a protest group which was demanding jobs from the mission.
He had earlier said that 48 people tested positive after a service. It was actually the protesters who contracted the virus.
At a briefing on Sunday afternoon, he said the province has recorded a number of clusters in the health care settings, church gatherings, retails shops, funerals, ceremonies and parties.
He said: “The recent cluster outbreaks in gatherings have proven to be fatal such as a church gathering that took place in Assisi Convent in Ugu District, which saw 6 nuns sadly succumb to Covid-19. Another gathering was in Kwasizabantu in Umzinyathi district, which was attended by more than 2000 people!!! And I repeat: 2000 people. It is unthinkable. It is hardly surprising that at least 48 of the attendees have now since tested positive. We once again wish to issue a warning to our fellow compatriots that we are now confronted by a dangerous outbreak of Covid-19 in KZN. We appeal that everyone acts responsibly.”
The Premier’s Office later corrected their statement, saying the gathering had in fact been a protest at KwaSizabantu mission by people who said the mission discriminates against locals in terms of offering them jobs.
The church is currently being investigated by amongst other bodies, the SA human rights commission and the Cultural, Religious And Linguistic Communities (CRL) rights commission after accusations of rape, assaults and other human rights violations were levelled against the mission’s leaders.
The church’s latest conduct, coupled with the behaviour of citizens attending funerals and beach revellers who continue to flout Covid-19 protocols, are largely to blame for the recent spike in infections in the province.
Zikalala, who briefed the media in Durban on Sunday, said the provincial government was concerned about organisations and individuals not adhering to Covid-19 protocols.
“There is a high level of non-compliance with proper wearing of masks, which seems to be influenced by alcohol consumption and a high appetite for gatherings, especially in areas of entertainment that pose a high risk of being super spreaders – including the beaches.
“We’ve also noted cellphone camera footage depicting scenes of overcrowding at beaches, and failure to wear masks by people swimming in rivers, and elsewhere,” Zikalala said.
As of Saturday, KZN, which is one of the country’s Covid-19 hotspots, had recorded 154 000 infections, with close to 3 000 cases registered on Saturday alone.
Despite the provincial government imposing more restrictions in public spaces and the province’s beaches, which will be shut on December 25, 26 and 31, January 1, 2 and 3, a lack of compliance continues to be a major problem.
“We wish to remind citizens to conduct themselves responsibly. The wearing of masks is compulsory, and adhering to social distancing is absolutely necessary.
“So is the need to respect the 11 pm to 4 am curfew that has been put in place. Those who are intent on flouting safety regulations had better be warned: action will be taken against you,” Zikalala said.
The spike in Covid-19 infections in KZN has created fears that the province’s health facilities would soon be overwhelmed.
Zikalala, who also blamed “reckless” liquor outlet owners for the spread, said there were currently 717 Covid-19 patients in the province’s health facilities, with a further 1 274 patients having been admitted for assessment.
“We also want to dispel the notion that our Health Care facilities are beginning to succumb. Yes, the health care facilities are experiencing high demand, but the system has not collapsed due to pressure. It is up to all of us to ensure that we do not get to that stage.”
The provincial government’s concerns around the high level of non-compliance comes after police minister Bheki Cele had identified KZN as one of the province’s Covid-19 and crime hotspot.
While the police were under added pressure to enforce the Covid-19 regulations, Cele said the focus remained on fighting crime in the country.
“I’ve told the police that they should serve, protect and prevent crime. This was their role before Covid-19 and will remain their constitutional mandate,” he said
News24.com | Bruised Sharks will be heartened by S’bu Nkosi’s timely form as playoffs loom
S’bu Nkosi (Gallo Images)
- As the Shark contemplate a particularly untimely loss to the Lions, they at least know that their Bok winger, S’bu Nkosi, is hitting form.
- The 24-year-old was a standout performer at Ellis Park and looks hungry to take the lead in his team’s push for a Currie Cup title.
- Coach Sean Everitt is also enjoying the competitiveness of the tournament.
There wasn’t exactly a lot of positives for the Sharks to take out of their loss to the Lions at Ellis Park this weekend, but as they head into a crucial final stretch before the Currie Cup playoffs, they at least have a firing Springbok winger.
S’bu Nkosi was a glittering exception on a night where the Durbanites’ backline lacked cohesion and confidence.
He made some outstanding reads on defence and was a real threat on attack, notably in plucking a fine kick-off from Curwin Bosch and going on a run that should’ve been rounded off better by his team-mates.
Following a stop-start complexion to his season since local rugby’s resumption, the 24-year-old flyer looks hungry to take a lead in the Sharks’ push for the title.
“S’bu really did put his hand up,” said Sean Everitt, the Sharks’ head coach.
“I thought he was outstanding throughout. When he got the ball, he was always a threat. He’s also superb in winning contestable kicks and that makes him even more of a threat.”
Yet, despite the nature of the Sharks’ performance in general and how Nkosi stood out, Everitt also takes heart from a few other senior players who delivered decent showings.
“I don’t think there was any lack of effort from the team, they worked hard and tried really hard. It’s just that we weren’t up to scratch as a team, so we’ll have to review things,” he said.
“Henco Venter played well at No 7 and (lock) Aston Fortuin hasn’t played rugby since February and did well while (flanker) Dylan Richardson was his usual self. We have some players taking the lead, it’s just now about gelling as a whole.”
While the Sharks missed out on a golden opportunity to close the gap on log leaders the Bulls, who had their match against Griquas cancelled due to Covid protocols, the Lions’ win has seen them leapfrog ahead of the Durbanites and setting up a thrilling race to the semifinals.
“It’s been a disruptive season and all the teams have had their challenges along the way, but the Currie Cup is one of the top domestic competitions in the world,” said Everitt.
“I’m glad that it’s closely contested. Teams really have to be on top of their game every week. It’s a good learning curve and if the players want to play international rugby, consistency is what’s expected of them.”
News24.com | Cop shot in Eastern Cape, police in hot pursuit of suspect
Police are in hot pursuit of a suspect in the Eastern Cape.
Police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly shot a police officer in an apparent burglary at a post office in Gonubie, Eastern Cape.
In a statement, police said they had responded to an alarm call at the post office in the early hours of Saturday.
“Upon patrolling the surroundings of the area, an unknown male was found hiding on the premises. The man claimed to be a security guard when questioned by the police. However, it was suspicious for the guard not to be dressed in a uniform and claiming to work for a false company,” said police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci.
When the police officer tried to search the man, he allegedly drew a firearm, shot the officer and fled the scene on foot.
The injured police officer was rushed to hospital.
“On the screening of the crime scene, it was discovered that the post office was burglarised. However, it remains unclear if any money was taken and that will form part of the investigation,” said Soci.
The Eastern Cape’s provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga, said police were hot on the heels of the suspect.

News24.com | DA claims Dlamini-Zuma ‘unilaterally’ amended curfew in new rules – but Cogta says there was no change
- The DA claims Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma “overruled” the president by issuing a new national closing time of 21:00 for establishments.
- But it seems the party confused segments of the regulations, which were meant for hotspot areas only.
- Cogta confirmed the closing time of 22:00 still applied to the rest of the country.
The DA on Saturday issued a statement claiming that Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma undermined President Cyril Ramaphosa by unilaterally issuing a new national closing time of 21:00 for establishments.
However, it seems the party confused segments of the regulations, which were meant for hotspot areas only.
The curfew in hotspot areas is 22:00, and bars, restaurants and other establishments have to close an hour earlier.
In the rest of the country, the curfew is 23:00 and bars and restaurants have to close at 22:00.
READ | A 22:00 curfew for SA’s Covid-19 hotspots and new booze restrictions, NCCC recommends
This was confirmed by Cogta spokesperson Lungi Mtshali on Saturday, who told News24 that Dlamini-Zuma hadn’t changed anything.
“The regulation of 21:00 refers to and applies to hotspot areas, as announced by the president,” said Mtshali.
Mtshali said the closing of establishments at 22:00 still stood for the rest of the country.
He said it was always the case, since the announcement, that establishments in hotspots areas would close at 21:00.
However, DA MP Dean Macpherson was not convinced and said the government had “buggered up”.
“Let me guess? They say 21:00 is for the hotspot areas?” he said over the phone.
Macpherson said there was no distinction for hotspot areas in the regulations published in the government gazette.
“Where does it say that in the regulations? There’s no distinction in the regulations. It’s just an excuse and they realised they buggered up. It’s deliberate. Law enforcements are going around enforcing a 21:00 closure,” he said.
He had initially claimed in a statement that Dlamini-Zuma decided to “overrule” Ramaphosa through amended regulations published in the government gazette on Thursday.
“It should not be allowed that a minister can advance their own agendas through regulations as we have seen time and again. That is why I have written to Dlamini-Zuma and the president requesting an urgent answer as to why the closing time has been altered in this caviller [sic] manner and, hopefully have it amended back to 22:00.
“Establishments like restaurants need every hour they possibly can get to make up for the hard and brutal lockdown that they have been subjected to this year.”
Earlier this week, Ramaphosa tightened regulations and closed beaches amid the country grappling with a second wave of Covid-19.Ramaphosa said: “On-site consumption of alcohol at licensed establishments is not permitted after 22:00. No consumption of alcohol is permitted in public spaces, such as parks and beaches.
“The curfew is meant to prevent gatherings that go on late into the night, while enabling restaurants, bars, and taverns to continue to operate and earn an income. “Nelson Mandela Bay, the Garden Route district in the Western Cape and the Sarah Baartman district in the Eastern Cape have been identified as Covid-19 hotspot areas.

News24.com | Champions Sundowns held by Golden Arrows
Arrows v Sundowns. (PA/TEAMtalk Media)
Golden Arrows held defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in their DStv Premiership encounter at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium outside Durban on Saturday.
AS IT HAPPENED | Golden Arrows v Mamelodi Sundowns
Masandawana enjoyed most of the possession in the opening 10 minutes and probed away at the Arrows defence, but the hosts did well to keep the league leaders at bay.
Sundowns finally made the breakthrough via a set-piece in the 17th minute. A Lyle Lakay corner found Mothibi Mvala, who rose high to head home on his debut for the Brazilians.
Five minutes later the scoreline was level again as Abafana Bes’thende found their equaliser. Pule Mmodi and Ntsako Makhubela combined before crossing for Michael Gumede who headed home to level matters.
It was quite the physical affair as the midfield battle heated up with the score tied once more.
Just shy of the hour mark, Peter Shalulile had a go from the edge of the Arrows box but the Sundowns striker hit it across the face of the goal and wide.
In the latter stages of the second half, Arrows did well to keep Sundowns under some pressure and took their shots when the opportunity presented itself.
Both sides defended well as the game drew to a close and earned a point each as the spoils were shared.
Sundowns remain top of the standings with 18 points after eight games, while Arrows moved up to fifth with 12 points from eight games.
