Sport24.co.za | Skipper Faf committed to struggling Proteas’ transition
Cape Town – Proteas captain Faf du Plessis says he is still committed to leading the side in Test cricket in what he refers to as a “transition” period.
South Africa’s first series under interim team director Enoch Nkwe ended with an innings and 202-run loss to India in Ranchi on Tuesday, meaning they go down 3-0 in the series.
It was South Africa’s first Test cricket since they lost a home series against Sri Lanka 2-0 back in February, while their dismal showing at the 2019 World Cup resulted in Cricket South Africa parting ways with former coach Ottis Gibson.
The likes of Dale Steyn and Hashim Amla have since left the Test arena, while JP Duminy and Imran Tahir retired from ODI cricket after the World Cup.
Under new leadership and with a number of stalwarts no longer involved, the Proteas are looking to rebuild.
Du Plessis himself is 35 years old and while he has expressed his desire to captain the side to the T20 World Cup in Australia next October, he has not given any indication on what his ODI future looks like just yet.
Up next for the Proteas is a four-match home Test series against England that starts at Centurion on Boxing Day, and they will be under pressure to deliver a performance that restores the belief that this side is still very capable of competing with the best in the world.
Du Plessis, given what he said in Ranchi on Tuesday, is likely to remain at the helm for that series.
“It’s a very young team and how I see my journey unfolding with this team is to help that transition period,” he said.
“Graeme Smith was a successful captain for a very long time and then after him there were questions over who was going to captain the side.
“This period is to try and make that process a bit smoother by identifying the next leaders and captains and working with them.
“When that time is right, then it will be right, but right now it’s just about that process.”
The obvious captaincy candidates in the current Test set-up are vice-captain Temba Bavuma and opener Aiden Markram, but neither of those out-of-form players are commanding their places in the side currently.
Quinton de Kock is the other option.
“You look for personalities within the team who you see in three, four, five or six years to come and then the process starts,” Du Plessis added.
“In a perfect world you would start the (rebuilding) process somewhere in the middle by changing one or two players and the period is shorter, but the position we find ourselves in now with a lot of experience out of the Test team, that process will probably take longer.
“Right now, it’s about identifying the personalities who you believe will drive this team forward, based on character more than anything else.
“It’s a rebuilding phase. The way forward when you’re going through really tough times like this is to start identifying characters that will drive the team forward.”
Health24.com | How to put safety first when planning to pack food-to-go
Whether you’re tailgating, cooking for a potluck or bringing in a treat for co-workers, keep safety in mind to avoid food-borne illnesses.
Safe handling is always important, but it’s an even bigger priority when you’re away from your kitchen, without the benefit of your fridge and oven to control food temperatures. The key is to plan ahead to keep food safe until eaten. The golden rule is to keep cold foods cold – below 4.4°C, and keep hot foods hot – above 60°C.
Keeping cold food cold means you’ll need to use a cooler with cold packs or lots of ice, and keep it in the shade. Foods that don’t need to be stored in the cooler include whole fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, and peanut butter and jelly.
If you’ll be cooking, such as grilling, at the venue, carry raw food in its own cooler, double wrapped in plastic to contain any juices. Bring disposable wipes for hand washing. If you’re taking food to a friend’s home for a BBQ, for instance, keep meat and poultry refrigerated until ready to put on the grill. Since food may brown before it’s cooked through, test with an instant-read thermometer for safety.
Best internal temperature for cooked meats
- Red meat: 74°C
- All ground meat: 71°C
- Poultry: 74°C
If cooking in batches, place cooked meats off to the side of the grill rack or in a 200-degree oven until serving. And, of course, never use the same platter and utensils for raw and cooked meat and poultry.
One final note: Any leftover food is safe to take home only if it was kept in a cooler, and the cooler still had ice in it.

News24.com | The curse of the DA’s metro mayoral class of 2016
When Herman Mashaba announced his resignation as DA councillor on Monday morning and therefore mayor of Johannesburg, it meant that none of the four mayors who took the reins of the four metros the DA governed after the 2016 election – albeit with a little help from their friends in three cases – will serve a full term.
In the heady days after the 2016 municipal elections, phrases like “coalitions are the future” and “political realignment” abounded.
Change was in the air, and the party poised to benefit the most from this was the DA.
With Mmusi Maimane leading the party into an election for the first time, they campaigned hard and told all and sundry that they could add the metros of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay to that of Cape Town, which they have governed since 2006.
In Cape Town, incumbent mayor Patricia de Lille – or Aunty Pat as she is mostly affectionately known in those parts – was the DA’s candidate, in Johannesburg it was maverick self-made millionaire Herman Mashaba, in Tshwane Solly Msimanga, regarded as a rising star in the party, and in Nelson Mandela Bay party stalwart Athol Trollip.
Apart from Cape Town, where the DA won an outright majority, coalition agreements followed and a loose arrangement with EFF who said it would not go into coalition but would support the DA-led coalitions to keep the ANC out of the government.
But the wave of change the DA caught in 2016 fizzled out by 2019 and De Lille, Mashaba, Msimanga and Trollip no longer wear the mayoral chains they held when the dust settled on the horse-trading after the 2016 elections.
Trollip
Athol Trollip was the first to go, in August 2018. Earlier in the year, EFF leader Julius Malema vowed to “cut the throat of whiteness” by removing Trollip as Nelson Mandela Bay mayor to exact his revenge on the DA for not supporting the EFF’s motion in the National Assembly that the Constitution should be amended to allow expropriation without compensation.
Meanwhile, Trollip’s relationship with coalition partner the UDM broke down over ousted deputy mayor Mongameli Bobani, with the DA claiming Bobani is corrupt, and the UDM accusing the DA of arrogance.
Trollip survived several motions of no confidence until one of his councillors turned on him and the DA and voted with the ANC, EFF and UDM to remove Trollip and elect his nemesis Bobani as mayor.
Trollip now leads the opposition in the council.
De Lille
With De Lille’s face on their election posters, the DA won the 2016 municipal election in the city with a two-thirds majority, a fact she often mentioned in the strife that was to follow.
On October 31, 2018, she officially resigned as mayor of Cape Town after a long and bruising battle with the party.
The DA accused De Lille of poor management and turning a blind eye to irregularities, while she accused a clique opposed to transformation – particularly with regards to spatial transformation – of a dirty tricks campaign against her.
She was replaced by Dan Plato and subsequently formed her own party, GOOD, which won two seats in the National Assembly. President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed her as public works minister.
Msimanga
On January 31, 2019, Solly Msimanga officially resigned.
He was the DA candidate for premier in Gauteng for the 2019 elections, and said he wanted to focus on campaigning for this position.
However, there were claims that he was pushed out of the City by the DA due to unsatisfactory performance and endless scandals, including the multibillion-rand GladAfrica scandal and the hiring of unqualified staffers in his office.
He was replaced at City Hall by Stevens Mokgalapa, and after the election, he became the leader of the opposition in the Gauteng legislature.
Mashaba
On October 21, 2019, Mashaba announced that he would resign as mayor effective November 27 as the election of former leader Helen Zille as chairperson of the DA’s federal council signalled a “victory for people in the DA who stand diametrically opposed to [his] beliefs and value system”.
“I cannot reconcile myself with a group of people who believes race is irrelevant in a discussion of inequality and poverty in South Africa in 2019,” said the former chairperson of the Free Market Foundation who was hailed as a hero by Maimane a few minutes later.
While the EFF took some convincing to back Mashaba in 2016, by the time he resigned, they cosied up to him, so much so that some in the DA complained that he panders to the red berets.
Against this backdrop, allegations emerged that the EFF benefited from a R1bn fleet tender awarded by the City.
Mashaba denied any wrongdoing.
