Sport24.co.za | Presidents Cup hopefuls out to impress Tiger, Ernie
US captain Tiger Woods, the reigning Masters champion who hasn’t ruled out making himself a captain’s pick, and Internationals captain Ernie Els of South Africa will be keeping an eye on the scores when play starts Thursday in the US PGA Tour event at Silverado in Napa, California.
Each of them will make four captain’s picks in early November to complete his 12-man squad for the biennial team golf showdown in December at Australia’s famed Royal Melbourne layout.
“I’m going to lean heavily on the opinions of my assistants and the guys who have already earned a spot,” Woods said. “My plan is to keep an open line of communication to ensure we find the four guys who best fit.”
So having 59-year-old US assistant captain Fred Couples in the Silverado field as well as US Presidents Cup team qualifiers Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay should provide Woods some valuable insight.
Among the Americans at Napa who could be in the hunt for a Presidents Cup berth are Chez Reavie, Charles Howell, Brandt Snedeker and Phil Mickelson, who is trying to extend his record run of 12 consecutive Presidents Cup appearances. The 49-year-old left-hander, a five-time major winner, has also played on 12 straight Ryder Cup squads.
“I hope he plays well and plays his way on and gets picked,” DeChambeau said. “But if he doesn’t, I think he’d be great for the team camaraderie (as an assistant captain).
“What he brought to the table last year (at the Ryder Cup) was great, just an expectation that allowed us to be more comfortable. He brought a lot of experience, knowing when to say things and when not to say things. He could be a valuable asset.”
Mickelson will play alongside Cantlay and Collin Morikawa in the first two rounds while Thomas is paired with Snedeker and Jim Furyk over the first two days.
DeChambeau, who plays alongside 2018 Europe Ryder Cup hero Francesco Molinari of Italy and defending Safeway champion Kevin Tway in the first two rounds, defends his Shriners Hospitals Open title next week in Las Vegas.
He’s not really looking to see who might make a good Cup partner, seeing himself as an everyman who could give Woods some pairing options in foursomes and four-ball matches.
“I’m kind of I would say an average player in every facet, so you can really somewhat fit everybody to me,” DeChambeau said.
On the Internationals side, Australia’s Adam Scott and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama – both set to play in Melbourne already – will play alongside Colombia’s Sebastian Munoz, last week’s PGA winner in Jackson, Mississippi.
Other Internationals players in the field include Aussie Marc Leishman, Mexico’s Abraham Ancer and Taiwan’s CT Pan.
Other possible Els captain’s picks in the line-up include South Koreans Im Sung-jae, Kim Si-woo, Kang Sung and An Byeong-hun, Canada’s Corey Conners and Adam Hadwin and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo.
The Americans own a 10-1-1 advantage in the all-time rivalry with the Internationals taking their lone win at Royal Melbourne in 1998.
“No matter how much they’re going to want it, we’re going to want it more – I know that,” DeChambeau declared.
Part of the US inspiration will be playing for Woods, an idol since his 1997 Masters win who inspired many of today’s top young players.
“What he brings to the table, the intensity, the passion, the competitiveness, the drive to do the best he possibly can… it’s going to be a lot of fun to be a part of,” DeChambeau said.
News24.com | Ex-KZN police spokesperson jailed for fake matric certificate gets parole
Former KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge, who was jailed over a fake matric certificate, has been granted parole, the Department of Correctional Services said on Wednesday.
“Mr Mdunge participated in relevant correctional programmes and was further assessed by our special services experts who, among others, include social workers and psychologists in order to determine his suitability for parole placement,” said department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
“The parolee will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of community corrections, and must comply with a specific set of conditions. He will also be subjected to supervision until the sentence expires.”
Mdunge’s parole was approved by the correctional supervision and parole boards with effect from August 20, which means he spent two of his five-year sentence in jail.
As a first-time offender, he was considered to have a “positive support system” and was placed on parole in line with Section 73 of the Correctional Services Act.

This law determines the minimum periods of sentence that must be served before consideration may be given to possible placement.
“Offenders placed on parole are supervised throughout their parole period,” Nxumalo said.
Mdunge will have to continue department programmes while on parole.
He was convicted in November 2014 of fraud and forgery for using a fake matric certificate to get his job, and to advance his career through studies at Unisa.
Mdunge was sentenced in May 2015 to five years in jail but after losing appeals in both the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal he only went to jail in August 2017.
News24.com | Habitual criminal, 63, handed 13 life sentences for murder, rape and robbery of five women
A habitual criminal who robbed, raped and killed five young women in less than a year was handed 13 life sentences in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
George Motale, 63, who has a long list of previous offences that he absconded or attempted to escape from since 1976, was handed the highest sentence for his reign of terror between 2011 and 2012, which saw him murder five women in Krugersdorp, Tarlton and Randfontein.
Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Hurbetin Phindi Mjonondwane said Motale, from Mshenguville, had been sentenced 24 times for offences ranging from theft and malicious damage to property, burglary and attempting to escape from lawful custody.
The five victims he and a co-perpetrator were charged with robbing, raping and killing were aged between 20 and 30.
“The accused would approach them with job offers and lure them to deserted areas where they would perform the criminal acts,” Mjonondwane said.
Motale had pleaded not guilty to all charges, while his co-accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced in 2012.
Motale was convicted in December last year.
“Before Judge Moses Mavundla passed the sentence, the accused testified in mitigation and persisted that all the allegations against him are not true, however, the court exercised its discretion when passing sentence,” Mjonondwane said.
“Motale’s defence counsel also proposed at least 25 years imprisonment, basing their argument on the fact that the he has been in custody for seven years and that the court needs to consider his age.”
Senior prosecutor Pakanyiswa Marasela called for life imprisonment, arguing Motale was a habitual criminal and should be removed from society to prevent further harm on innocent, vulnerable women, Mjonondwane said.
“Judge Mavundla said the incidents occurred over a protracted period, that these offences were not opportunistic but were rather premeditated and deliberate. He ruled that the accused takes no responsibility for the consequences of the results of his crimes and deserves to be permanently removed from society.”

Health24.com | Sleep deprivation isn’t just bad for your brain – it also alters your fat metabolism
If you’re getting anything under the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep a night, it could lead to several chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, and put you at risk for obesity.
A previous Health24 article notes that sleep deprivation can also affect the digestive system and immune system, and that “catch-up” sleep on the weekend does not reverse the effects on your metabolism.
A new study now adds to the evidence of the harmful effects of lack of sleep on our health.
Researchers from Pennsylvania State University report that just a few days of sleep deprivation had made participants feel less full after eating. More than this, it caused the fat in their food to metabolise differently.
Restricting participants’ sleep
While many existing studies focus on lack of sleep’s effects on glucose metabolism and its link to diabetes, there are only a handful that have assessed digestion of lipids from food.
The study, published in the Journal of Lipid Research, had 15 healthy men in their 20s checked into a sleep lab for ten nights. This was after they had spent a week getting plenty of sleep at home. For five of the ten nights, participants spent no more than five hours in bed each night.
Sleep deprivation affects fat metabolism
Participants received a standardised high-fat dinner which consisted of a bowl of chilli mac after four nights of sleep restriction. This was to assess whether an uncomfortable schedule could affect their metabolism.
“It was very palatable – none of our subjects had trouble finishing it – but very calorically dense,” said Kelly Ness, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington who ran the study.
Researchers found that most participants felt less satisfied after eating the same rich meal while sleep deprived than when they had eaten it well-rested.
Insight into digestion
Participants’ blood samples were also analysed. It was found that that sleep restriction led to a faster clearance of lipids from the blood after a meal. This could predispose people to put on weight.
“The lipids weren’t evaporating – they were being stored,” explained Orfeu Buxton, professor at Penn State and a senior author of the study.
Although the study has its limitations in that it was highly controlled and focused on healthy young people, it gives worthwhile insight into digestion, said Ness.
Bottom line: if you’re watching your weight, make sure you get enough shuteye.
