IN MEMORY OF UYINENE
Ukranian-born artist Ana Kuni spent two hours painting in memory of the late Uyinene Mrwetyana.
Kuni was approached by photographer Joshua Rubin to lend her voice to the fight against gender-based violence.
“She did the painting in about two hours, we sat and talked for that whole time, just about what’s going on and how we can make a small difference,” he said.
Once the painting was done, Rubin took the painting to the University of Cape Town where the 19-year-old Mrwetyana studied film and media studies. The artwork was displayed and fellow students were given the chance to write their messages on the canvas.

Uyinene’s sister’s heartbreaking tribute
“What haunts me the most isn’t the fact that you’re gone and taken away from us so soon, it’s the thought of the fear and pain you experienced all alone.”
This is the opening line of a tribute posted on Facebook by Khanya Mrwetyana, the sister of Uyinene.
“I’m so sorry Bhelekazi (her clan name) …” Khanya writes in the post, which was published on Monday.
“I’m so sorry you had to be alive at a time where being a woman is all it takes to set a man off. Now we hold on to the memories we shared together and the thought of what could’ve become of you had that man not violated you.
Sport24.co.za | Medvedev into 1st Grand Slam final at US Open
New York – Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev advanced to his first Grand Slam final on Friday by defeating Bulgaria’s 78th-ranked Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 6-3 at the US Open.
Medvedev will play in Sunday’s championship match at Arthur Ashe Stadium against the winner of a later semi-final between Italian 24th seed Matteo Berrettini and 18-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.
“Finally I’m here after three sets,” Medvedev said. “I’m just happy to be in the final.”
If second-seeded Nadal can capture his fourth US Open crown on Sunday, he would move one shy of matching Roger Federer’s all-time men’s record for Grand Slam titles.
The 33-year-old Spaniard would also draw to within one of the Open-era record of five US Open titles shared by Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors.
Nadal beat Medvedev in last month’s Montreal final in their only meeting, then skipped Cincinnati, where Medvedev won the title.
Medvedev, now 20-2 in the four North American events, beat Berrettini last year at Indian Wells in their only matchup.
“When I was going to USA, I didn’t know it was going to be this good,” Medvedev said. “So I have to say I love USA.”
Medvedev is the first Russian in a Grand Slam final since Marat Safin won the 2005 Australian Open title and the first Russian to reach the US Open final since Safin won the 2000 crown.
At 23, Medvedev is just the third men’s Grand Slam finalist born in the 1990s after Canada’s Milos Raonic and Austria’s Dominic Thiem. He could become the first ’90s-born Slam winner.
Medvedev is only the third Open Era player to reach finals in Washington, Canada, Cincinnati and the US Open in the same year after Ivan Lendl in 1982 and Andre Agassi in 1995.
Dimitrov, who lost seven of his eight matches just prior to arriving at Flushing Meadows, would have been the lowest-ranked US Open men’s finalist since the rankings began in 1973.
“Good match overall. I think it was just a few points here and there,” Dimitrov said. “Yeah, three sets to love, but the score for me doesn’t justify the match itself. I think it was a good level. Overall he played really well, fought hard, a lot of the key points he played well. So I don’t want to be too down on myself.”
The Bulgarian was the lowest-ranked Slam semi-finalist in 11 years and the lowest at the US Open since 174th-ranked Connors in 1991.
US Open fans gave solid applause to Medvedev. They had booed Medvedev in the third and fourth rounds after he flashed an obscene gesture and later taunted them, saying he thrived on their jeers for the energy to win. He later apologized.
Medvedev took the tie-break after Dimitrov won after Dimitrov netted a forehand and sent another long on the last two points.
They exchanged breaks to open the second set and again in the fourth and fifth games but Dimitrov netted a backhand to surrender a break and the set in the 10th game.
Medvedev broke for a 3-1 lead in the third set and held to the finish, which came on a service winner after two hours and 38 minutes.
Nadal will face first-time Slam semi-finalist Berrettini in the Spaniard’s 33rd career major semi-final and eighth at the US Open. It’s also Nadal’s seventh consecutive Grand Slam semi-final.
Nadal, who won his 12th French Open title in June, seeks his 27th Slam final, four shy of Federer’s record, and second US Open final in three years after retiring with a knee injury in last year’s semi-finals.
Nadal, who has dropped only one set at Flushing Meadows this fortnight, chases his fourth title of the year.
Berrettini, the first Italian man in the US Open semi-finals since Corrado Barazzutti in 1977, is trying to follow the footsteps of the only Italian men’s Slam winner — Adriano Panatta at the 1976 French Open.
At 23, Berrettini is the youngest US Open men’s semi-finalist since Novak Djokovic in 2010.

Health24.com | How humans have been shaping the brains of their best friends for hundreds of years
Some dog breeds are incredibly fast runners and some, like the Bloodhound, are known for their smelling ability. Some are small, but what they lack in size they make up for in their activity levels.
Other dogs were bred specifically to be good companions. And then there are those strong and smart working dogs – such as the Great Dane and Boxer.
Brains tweaked as well
Whether it was for hunting, herding or guarding, dogs have been purposely bred by humans to perform specific tasks for hundreds of years.
Today, thanks to this selective breeding, there are more than 400 dog breeds in the world. In fact, dogs have more physical variation than almost any other animal on earth.
And now, for the first time, a new study has discovered that this practice has not simply tweaked dogs’ sizes, colours and behaviours, but also their brains.
The study’s lead author, Dr Erin Hecht, a neuroscientist studying dog cognition at Harvard University and his colleagues mention that although dog breeds are known to vary in cognition, temperament, and behaviour, the neural origins of the variations were previously unknown.
The research, published in JNeurosci, investigated the effects of selective breeding on the brain structure of 62 dogs from 33 dog breeds through magnetic resonance imaging scans. The dogs had the neurological evaluations done at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The scientists found that there was wide variation in brain structure that was not simply related to body size or head shape.
Greatest variance across breeds
The team also went on to examine the areas of the brain that vary the most across breeds. This led to maps of six brain networks that were each linked to at least one behavioural characteristic. All six brain networks had proposed functions varying from social bonding to movement. The maps showed that the variations in behaviours across different dog breeds were correlated with anatomical variations.
Purpose of the study
The researchers of the study claim that studying this neuroanatomical variation in dogs offers a unique opportunity to study the evolutionary relationship between brain structure and behaviour. All 62 dogs in the study were pets and not working dogs.
Dr Hecht explained that her team is also trying to better understand why and to what extent variations between “high-skill performers and low-skill performers” in the same breed occur. “For example, [the difference between] border collies who are winning herding competitions out in the real world and siblings of those dogs who, for whatever reason, would rather just sit on the couch,” she said.
If the researchers have managed to find a reason for these differences, Jeffrey Stevens, director of the Canine Cognition and Human Interaction Lab at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln commented: “Imagine what might be discovered in the brains of working dogs.”
Daniel Horschler, a PhD student at the University of Arizona’s Canine Cognition Centre, said the variation found across the breeds could also prove to be an important model for understanding how brains work in general.
