These ’10-Year Challenge’ Fitness Transformations Prove Everyone Starts Somewhere
If you love a transformation, then you hit the motherlode over the past few days. Thanks to the viral "10-year challenge" (sometimes referred to as the "How hard did aging hit you?" challenge-harsh), everyone's posting a 2019 photo alongside one from 10 years ago to their social media. Some are funny (Amy Schumer), some are inspirational (Sophia Amoruso), and some suggest it's possible to just opt out of aging. (Reese Witherspoon, just how?)
We're partial to health and fitness transformations, and the challenge has sparked many, accompanied by reflections that go far deeper than weight loss or muscle tone. Here are some dramatic before-and-afters that you need to see.
RELATED: 9 Body Positive 10-Year Challenge Posts That Will Leave You Feeling Inspired
Transformations aren't just about weight loss.
Katie Dunlop of Love Sweat Fitness looks way different from her 2009 self, but the changes go beyond the physical, she explained. "What a difference 10 years can make," she wrote in her caption. "Needless to say a lot has changed, but the most important change for me… my confidence. And that's about a lot more than just the weight loss. It's growth. It's learning to love yourself inside and out from the start, not when you reach a goal."
It's never too late to start.
In her transformation photo, trainer Natalie Jill pointed out that she's "not just another 'fitness girl'" in that she didn't take up fitness until the age of 39, which is considered late according to society's standards. In her earlier photo, she was "a divorced single mom, broke, overweight," who had come on some hard times, but in the second she's smiling from the cover of Muscle & Fitness Hers.

Fitness journeys aren't linear.
Trainer Brittne Babe posted two photos 10 years apart, noting that working toward a fitness goal is a learning experience. "My journey is continuous and went from weight loss, to weight gain, to less muscle, to now more muscle mass," she explained. "I began genetically thin and throughout my teenage years, my diet was horrible, which led to unhealthy habits and poor dieting. Once I identified who I no longer wanted to be, my health and fitness journey began." Now, she's starting to understand her body more, but still has ups and downs, she explained.
It takes work.
As easy as it might look on Instagram, trainers aren't born super-fit humans. "When people see me now, they have the misconception that I've always been this fit; assuming that I am gifted with some miraculous genetic predisposition," trainer Adrianne Nina wrote in a post. "The image on the left is a young version of myself that was not health conscious and wasn't aware of any reasoning to be. At that time, I had no vision of becoming who I am today. It was 7 years ago when I decided to make my health and fitness a priority. The contrast between the two is evidence of my ongoing efforts to be the best version of myself."
You might look back and laugh.
Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, a complete badass who's won the CrossFit games, pointed out that she started doing CrossFit with room for improvement. She poked fun at herself with hashtags like #rockingrunningshoestolift and #usedmostlymyfacemuscletolift. "It's okay to look ugly, it's okay to fail, it's okay to get frustrated and it's okay to feel lonely…" she wrote, "it's just not okay to give up!! And also never take yourself too seriously that you can't look back and have a good laugh at your younger overachiever and oh so serious and intense self."
RELATED: CrossFit's Camille Leblanc-Bazinet: 'I'm Glad I Don't Have a Thigh Gap'
Love yourself at every step.
Anna Victoria of Fit Body shared her 10-year journey before the challenge was even a thing, so she came back with an 11-year transformation. Victoria explained that she adopted a more balanced lifestyle over the years, going from eating only fast food to the 80/20 eating style, avoiding the gym to working out, and from partying to enjoying wine occasionally. She also pointed out that shooting for fitness goals and being body positive aren't mutually exclusive. "No matter how much I did or didn't weigh, I never let it faze me and question my worth," she wrote.
Fitness can transform your mental health.
Massy Arias (@mankofit) credits exercise for helping her overcome a period when she was so depressed she would lock herself indoors. (And later helping her through postpartum depression.) She touched on that journey in a 10-year challenge photo. "I started working out and eating healthy as a way to cope with depression, lack of self-confidence and purpose in life," she wrote. "It became my passion and my medicine. Today my passion has become my career."
RELATED: Massy Arias Says Postpartum Depression Led Her to Lose All Connection With Her Body
You might feel completely changed.
Fitness model and bodybuilder Michelle Lewin posted an old bikini photo alongside one with "more boobies, more waist, and so much more wisdom." Lewin has become one of the biggest fitness influencers in the world, but she says she lost a beauty competition 10 years ago because she "was the fullest girl," she wrote.

Don't assume you're not the "type" who exercises.
Within the last 10 years, Melissa Alcantara realized that assuming you're not the "type" to try a certain workout will just keep holding you back. "23-year-old me learned a lesson or two (hundred) in these last 10 years," she wrote. "The most important lesson of all was to never say 'I'm not the type of person who' what a crock lol." Alcantara is the ultimate reminder that everyone starts somewhere. She got into weight training by learning from YouTube videos and now trains Kim Kardashian.
RELATED: Kim Kardashian's Trainer Shares 6 Moves That Will Transform Your Legs and Butt
Self-image transformations can be just as dramatic.
10 years ago Julianne Hough was super fit-she was a pro on Dancing with the Stars after all-but her mentality has transformed. In the older photo, she sported "bleach blonde hair, fake tan, all the makeup, sequins galore." Now, she's less attached to trying to fit a mold. (She realized that no matter what you look like, you'll never impress everyone…and do you really even want to?) "The past 10 years have been all about removing the idea of who I thought I was supposed to be, and uncovering the essence of who I am," she wrote in her caption. "I've learned how to just be me. My natural, raw, unapologetic self."
A small goal can spiral into something huge.
Cassey Ho may have a huge following devoted to her Pilates workouts, but that wasn't always the case. Pop Pilates (the official pilates class of 24 Hour Fitness gyms developed by Ho) posted an Instagram with photos of Ho, one working out in her parents' basement "doing #POPPilates before anyone even knew what it was," and another of her leading 4,000 people through a workout. Ho previously revealed that her path to fitness wasn't completely smooth. She didn't speak with her father for a few years since he disapproved of her career choice.
The struggle is worth it.
A decade ago Beachbody trainer Autumn Calabrese was just getting started in the fitness space-working with Mighty Mommies, according to her 10-year challenge post-but a lot has happened between now and then. "There was a move to another state (I lasted 5 weeks & moved back to LA with dom when he was 6 months old), there was a divorce, there were a lot of chances that didn't work out in my career, friends made, friends lost, moving to different apartments, living paycheck to paycheck, long nights and longer days," she wrote. "There was work and sacrifice. Was it worth it? Absa-frigen-lutely."
RELATED: This Diet and Workout Plan Is Supposed to Help You Hit Your Goal Weight in 80 Days—but Is It Safe?
You're already enough.
Over the span of 10 years, Heidi Kristoffer has gained weight and perspective. The creator of CrossFlowX posted photos of herself in handstands with a reflection on how she's changed. In the earlier photos, she had a strong mind and was crushing it career-wise, but was constantly told she wasn't enough, she wrote. Now, things are different, she writes on Instagram: "The woman in the other photos weighs more than she ever thought she would be okay with, and even so is willingly on camera in spandex daily. But, she is equal parts soft and strong, gets to share what she loves and be unapologetically herself every day, is the mama to three incredible tiny humans 3 and under, and understands that she is ENOUGH." (P.S. You must watch this incredible timelapse video of Kristoffer doing yoga throughout her pregnancy.)

News24.com | Prisoner denied access to personal laptop for studies takes authorities to court
An inmate at Johannesburg Medium C Correctional facility has taken the head of the prison, the national commissioner and the Minister of Correctional Services to court in an attempt to have access to a laptop for his studies.
The prison has denied Mbalenhle Nkosi access to his laptop, which he needs for distance learning. He has accused the authorities of “infringing on his right to further education” by restricting his study time to when the computer room is open.
Nkosi, who is representing himself in court, opened a case in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg. The case was supposed to be heard on June 18, but it was postponed to give Nkosi time to study the prison’s court papers.
“The [prison] seeks to unfairly, irrationally, unjustifiably and unconstitutionally limit my basic right to education by limiting and unreasonably dictating the hours during which I am permitted to study,” Nkosi said in court papers. “This, despite the fact that I am locked up in a single cell for prolonged periods without anything constructive to do in all of that time. This goes against the very fabric of rehabilitation, and is contradictory to me becoming a productive individual upon my reintegration into society.”
Nkosi is a registered student at Oxbridge Academy – a private distance learning college based in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. He enrolled in a computer studies course in November 2017. He has two months left of his course before his registration expires.
Nkosi started serving a 20-year sentence in March 2011. When he started studying in 2017, he was permitted to use his personal laptop in his cell because there was no computer room facility at Johannesburg Medium B Prison.
About a year later, he was transferred to Johannesburg Medium C Prison, where his laptop was confiscated upon arrival. He said he had shown the head of education in the prison his registration letter and his proof of tuition payment, but “she couldn’t care less”.
‘I was forced to drop out’
He then wrote an application to be allowed a laptop in his cell, stating that he was a registered student and his course required access to a laptop.
His application was denied by the prison management, who said Oxbridge Academy confirmed that Nkosi only needed a computer to type his assignments, which could be done in the computer room. They recommended that a state desktop in the computer room be allocated to Nkosi.
In email correspondence between Gauteng regional commissioner of correctional services, Thakane Grace Molatedi, and Nkosi’s fiancé, Sandy Sibanyoni, Molatedi said: “Due to security challenges of offenders utilising computers and laptops for other activities except for study purposes at most correctional centres, the offender cannot be allowed to have the computer in his cell, but will be afforded an opportunity to use the computer room for study purposes.”
Nkosi said his studies have already been compromised, after eight months of fighting to use his laptop in his cell. He said he will also incur a financial cost for not completing his course in the stipulated time.
“I was forced to drop out and linger around like most of the inmates, without studying or doing anything to develop myself,” Nkosi told GroundUp.
“You always hear from the society out there that inmates are quick to re-offend after being released from prison… Is this type of behaviour by prison officials… not part of the reason why inmates re-offend because they go out of prison without education or skill?”
Nkosi said he needs to complete this course so that he is technologically savvy when he is released.
“Technology is constantly advancing, so I need to keep up,” he said. He wants to start a career in Information Technology and open his own internet café.
“My family paid for my course out of their own pocket, so this means a lot to me. You must remember that I have kids on the outside, so I need to do what it takes to have all the skills I need to support them when I am released,” said Nkosi.
Correctional services explains its position
The Department of Correctional Services was unable to comment on Nkosi’s case because it is currently before the High Court, but its national spokesperson, Singabakho Zwide, said inmates were granted access to laptops through application or by using the computer room facility.
He said the application would have to substantiate why it was necessary for them to use it in their cell and, even then, they were not allowed to keep it overnight and it was monitored very closely.
This was because having laptops in cells was a security risk, according to Zwide.
“Inmates can use laptops to create fraudulent documents, even when they do not have access to the internet… They are able to smuggle memory cards and clone sim cards… You’ll be surprised at what happens in these facilities,” he said.
“We don’t just take laptops away as a form of punishment or because we feel like it… We take them away when inmates have contravened the rules by going on websites they are not allowed to go on, like social media… Sometimes we find pornographic material, so we have to confiscate them,” Zwide told GroundUp.
When laptops were confiscated, Zwide said the inmates still had access to computer rooms.
“There is a very convenient facility called the ‘UNISA hub’ where laptops are given to inmates in a computer room. Any registered student is allowed to use this facility and there are IT [Information Technology] specialists monitoring what inmates are doing on their computers and which sites they are visiting,” he said.
But Zwide said he was aware that not all prisons had computer rooms.
“So if an inmate wants to register for a degree or course, we encourage them to request for a transfer to Kgosi Mampuru II [prison] for example, where they will have access to computers.”
When asked about the restriction it places on the amount of study time for inmates, Zwide said: “We acknowledge that but we also can’t ignore the security risks that come with it… Some victims on the outside have been threatened by inmates so we have to monitor these things closely,” he said.
“We are even struggling to control contraband such as cellphones… If they use laptops in their cells, they could use cell phones as hotspots to access the internet which poses a greater security risk.”
He said some inmates contravened policies, which forced the prison to confiscate their laptops.
“Then they take us to court, saying we are infringing on their right to education,” said Zwide. “We always tell the courts that our intention is not to prevent further studying. In fact, we encourage inmates to study further because it is part of our rehabilitation programme.”
Access to computer ‘a necessity, not a privilege’
The policy which prevents inmates from using laptops in their individual cells is applied inconsistently, which raises concerns about the cogency of the security argument.
A similar case was argued in Hennie and Others v Minister of Correctional Services and Others in the North Gauteng High Court in 2018. Judge Jody Kollapen said in his judgment that the policy which prevents inmates from using laptops in their individual cells is applied inconsistently which “…raises concerns about the cogency of the security argument advanced by the [correctional facility]”.
He also noted that prisons without computer rooms, like the prison Nkosi was previously in, allowed inmates to have laptops in their cells.
Kollapen cited Section 29 (1) of the Constitution, which says everyone has the right to further education, which the state, through reasonable measures, must make progressively available and accessible. He also cited Section 35 (2) of the Constitution, which states that every detained person, including a sentenced prisoner, has the right to reading material which Kollapen said included electronic reading material.
The judgment read: “The court takes into consideration that study methods and accessibility of study material has changed considerably… Personal computers are certainly going to continue to play an increasingly important role as a means to access information which was in the past confined to textbooks.”
“Therefore access to a personal computer by students has become a necessity and not a privilege,” read the judgment.
He ordered that the inmates must have access to their laptops in their single cells, without access to a modem, as long as they are a registered student. He said the laptops would be made available for inspection at any time.
A refusal to allow inmates access to their laptops would risk compromising their ability to study and infringe on their right to further education, said Kollapen in his judgment.

News24.com | ‘It’s not his dream, it’s the people’s dream’ – Magashule defends Ramaphosa’s SONA high hopes
ANC secretary general Ace Magashule has defended President Cyril Ramaphosa’s lofty ambitions, saying the president and government will implement the programmes laid out in the State of the Nation Address (SONA).
On Thursday, Ramaphosa addressed a joint sitting of Parliament and made a number of pronouncements that were seen by numerous opposition MPs and political analysts as being heavy on ambition but light on detail.
Speaking to News24 after the proceedings adjourned, Magashule said: “…what the president has said is not his dream, it’s the people’s dream, the nation’s dream which is going to be realised.”
He added that “our role as an organisation is to ensure that what the president has said is going to be implemented … so we are going to perform, we are going to realise the dream…”
SCROLL: Ramaphosa dreams big, but MPs scoff ‘nightmare’
Magashule said the details of how these dreams would become a reality, would be made clear in the weeks and months to come.
“Ministers come from lekgotlas, as well as deputy ministers as well as director generals, so we are expecting after the lekgotla they have actually made sure they have timelines. We, as the organisation, are going to monitor implementation of what the president has said and as I’ve said, it is very practical and realistic.”
The lofty ambitions bandied about by the president in the address included:
- Ending hunger in the country in the next 10 years.
- Halving violent crime in the next decade.
- Doubling international tourist arrivals to 21 million by 2030
Toward the end of the address, Ramaphosa said: “We want a South Africa that has prioritised its rail networks and is producing high-speed trains connecting our megacities and the remotest areas of our country.”
“I dream of a South Africa where the first entirely new city built in the democratic era rises, with skyscrapers, schools, universities, hospitals and factories.
“Has the time not arrived to build a new smart city founded on the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution?” the president asked rhetorically.
One DA MP could be heard shouting in response from their seat: “We can’t even get normal trains working.”
