News24.com | Truck driver, who was petrol-bombed, dies of his injuries
A truck driver whose vehicle was petrol bombed in the Western Cape earlier this month has died of his injuries, according to the SA Long Distance Truckers association.
Bernard Groenewald sustained serious burn wounds after his truck was targeted on the N1, near Touws River, in the early hours of June 2.
He and his brother-in-law had pulled over on the side of the highway to rest.
While sleeping, a petrol bomb was thrown through one of the windows, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said at the time.
His wife, Ciska, confirmed his death to Netwerk24 on Friday night.
In a tweet, the association paid tribute to him the same night.
“Bernard fought to survive but sadly succumbed after a large part of his body was covered in third degree burns,” it said.
During the attack, Groenewald managed to jump out of the truck but a group of men chased him and threw another petrol bomb at him.
Shortly after the attack, his employer, Yolanda Huddlestone of Huddlestone Logistics, said Groenewald was in a serious condition and the recovery process would be a long one.
She added that his wife, Ciska whom she drove to a hospital in Worcester, was devastated.
Huddlestone questioned what the authorities were doing to assist trucking companies because there were no safe spots for stopovers, including on the N1 between Beaufort West and Cape Town.
“Our drivers can’t rest now because of attacks on their lives. We are calling on the government to do something because truck drivers are sitting ducks. This is our livelihood and also a service for the country.”
The police in the Western Cape have previously confirmed that cases of attempted murder and malicious damage to property have been opened.
No arrests have been made.
Health24.com | Drug ODs, suicides soaring among US millennials
So-called “deaths of despair” are skyrocketing among millennials, with thousands of 18- to 34-year-olds losing their lives to drugs, alcohol and suicide each year, a new report says.
During the past decade, drug-related deaths among that age group increased by 108%, alcohol-induced deaths by 69%, and suicides by 35%, according to the report from the Trust for America’s Health and Well Being Trust.
A call to action
Millennials are more heavily affected than older generations by each of these causes of death, the report states:
- In 2017, there were nearly 31 drug overdose deaths for every 100 000 18- to 34-year-olds, but fewer than 23 drug deaths per 100 000 across all age groups.
- Alcohol-induced death rates doubled for millennials between 1999 and 2007.
- Young adults experienced a 35% increase in suicide rates between 2007 and 2017, compared with a 14% increase for 35- to 54-year-olds; a 24% increase for those 55 to 74; and 14% uptick for people older than 75.
“We lost over 150 000 lives last year to drugs, alcohol and suicide. When we dive down deep into those data, the millennial generation just pops out,” said Benjamin Miller, chief strategy officer of Well Being Trust, a national foundation focused on mental, social and spiritual health.
“This is a call to action,” Miller said of the new report. “It’s unacceptable for us to continue to lose as many lives as we are losing to preventable causes. We have to do something different. What we are doing is simply not working.”
The opioid epidemic cannot be overlooked as a contributing factor, Miller said.
Opioid overdose death rates among millennials increased by more than 500% between 1999 and 2017, and deaths caused by synthetic opioids increased by a staggering 6 000%.
Dark psyche of millennials
It’s a terrible coincidence that millennials came of age “at a time when the medical profession was led down the wrong path in terms of opioid prescribing,” said Dr Andrew Saxon, director of the Addiction Psychiatry Residency Program at the University of Washington in Seattle.
But the increases in alcohol deaths and suicides point to something darker within the psyche of millennials, who typically are defined as people born between 1981 and 1996.
They grew up with a succession of shattering events for the United States – the 9/11 terror attacks, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and the Great Recession prompted by the housing bubble, Saxon said.
They graduated college saddled with heavy student debt at a time “our economy was near collapse”, he said. “The expectations that they would have jobs waiting for them and their skills would be wanted – sort of suddenly all of those prospects disappeared.”
Since then, they’ve had to grapple with the exploding costs of education and housing.
“We can track economic trends with suicides, and as long as we’ve been studying it, suicides have gone up during times of economic dislocation,” Saxon said.
Negative effects of social media
Miller, meanwhile, said the rise of social media likely has also had an impact on millennials’ sense of their prospects.
Social media can “make them feel more lonely – how come I don’t have that, or how come no one likes my picture?” he said. “In those cases, the negative effects of social media are seen.”
At the same time, mental health services continue to be doled out in a way that makes it unlikely many will get the help they need, Miller said.
“We know that six in 10 folks are seeking mental health care, yet if you look at the data, 96 million Americans last year had to wait over a week to get access to a mental health provider,” Miller said.
“When someone says to you that you’re going to have to come back next week or tomorrow or in two weeks, the likelihood you show up is relatively small,” he added.
To help stem these deaths of despair, the report recommends:
- Making mental health care, including screenings for substance use and depression, a routine part of primary care.
- Improving insurance coverage for medication-based treatments for substance abuse.
- Adopting pricing strategies to reduce alcohol consumption among teens and young adults.
- Offering suicide prevention programmes throughout the health care system.
- Making sure hospitals connect patients in crisis with behavioural health services in a timely manner.

Sport24.co.za | Late invite means Caster won’t run in Morocco
Cape Town – Caster Semenya’s agent stated that it was “too late” for the Olympic champion to compete in the IAAF Diamond League event in Rabat.
This comes after the organisers on Friday gave her the all clear to race in the 800m event by extending an invitation.
Semenya was initially barred from competing in Sunday’s Diamond League 800m event by the president of the Moroccan Athletics Federation.
Speaking to Reuters on Friday, Semenya’s agent Jukka Harkonen said that due to the lateness of the invitation, it was “impossible” for Semenya to travel in time for the race in Rabat, Morocco.
Semenya, who is back home in South Africa after a brief visit in France, would have to travel more than 20 hours to Rabat and still prepare for the race in a short amount of time.
“She’s not running. She was invited today but that was too late,” Harkonen told Reuters.
Last month, the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected Semenya’s challenge against the new IAAF regulations that would force her to lower her testosterone levels.
However, Semenya appealed to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland, which temporarily suspended the IAAF rules until a further hearing could take place.
On Thursday, the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland rejected the IAAF’s urgent request for permission to re-impose its eligibility regulations on the two-time 800m world champion.
This means that Semenya remains permitted to compete without restriction in the female category at this time.
The IAAF and Athletics South Africa have until June 25 to make submissions to the Supreme Court on Semenya’s request that the IAAF regulations be suspended throughout the entire appeal proceedings.
News24.com | Gugulethu fire station temporarily closed after attack on firefighters
The Gugulethu fire station has been temporarily closed following an attack on firefighters on Thursday evening, the City of Cape Town’s safety and security department announced on Friday.
Firefighters were attacked after extinguishing a fire at nearby municipal offices.
It is believed that a car and a carport at the Fezeka municipal office, next to the fire station, were set alight.
“Firefighters extinguished the fire, but soon became targets themselves when the group started hurling stones at their building, causing damage to the bay doors,” said mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.
The City’s chief fire officer has suspended operations at the Gugulethu fire station as a result.
Smith said firefighters at the Gugulethu station have had to be deployed to other fire stations in the meantime, amid safety concerns and until the situation in the area calms down.
Smith condemned the attack, saying the relocation of staff to other stations means that firefighting efforts in Gugulethu and surrounding areas would take longer, “as there are no resources operating from the local fire station until further notice”.
The City has called on Gugulethu residents to help identify the suspects behind the attack.

14 June 2019 – Customs officials intercept drugs worth R12 million at ORTIA
Pretoria, Friday, 14 June 2019 – Customs officials this week intercepted drugs with a combined value of approximately R12 million in three separate incidents at the Oliver Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).
On Wednesday, 12 June 2019, Customs officials intercepted a male passenger attempting to smuggle just over 3 kg heroin, with an estimated value of R9,2 million, out of the country.
The passenger was stopped and interviewed by Customs officials as he was boarding a flight to Europe. He was requested to accompany them to a designated area where he was asked to unlock his bags, which had been checked in and retrieved. In the Customs search area his bags were scanned and searched meticulously.
The Customs team found hidden objects in false compartments of the bags, which tested positive for heroin. He was arrested by members of the South African Police Service (CAS 106/06/2019).
In another incident, Customs officials placed a detention on cargo which arrived in Johannesburg from Lagos on 13 June, following on information received from the Crime Intelligence unit of the SA Police Service (SAPS CI).
Upon inspection, and with the assistance of detector dogs, four packages were collected containing 4 kg of ephedrine (crystal meth) with a street value of R2,2 million. The packages were handed over to members of SAPS’ Directorate of Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks).
A parcel of ephedrine valued at R630 000 was also found in a Mail Centre at ORTIA. The parcel, weighing 2,8 kg, will be handed over to the Police for further investigation as well.
SARS pulled off these successes in collaborative efforts with the SAPS Crime Intelligence unit and other related departments.
