Cape Town – Tayler Scott became the first South African pitcher to appear in a Major League Baseball (MLB) game after making his debut for the Seattle Mariners this past weekend.
Scott became the second South African player in Major League history and the first pitcher.
In 2017, Gift Ngoepe became the first South African to play a MLB game. Ngoepe played 41 games with the Pirates, then was traded to the Blue Jays in 2017/18 and is currently in the minor league’s with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Scott, who moved to Arizona as a teenager, made his debut on Saturday (Sunday morning SA time) as the Mariners took on the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium.
The 27-year-old Johannesburg native made his debut relieving team-mate Yusei Kikuchi during the fourth inning. He allowed four hits, three runs with a walk and four strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Scott signed with Seattle as a Minor League free agent in December and was called up after All-Star outfielder Mitch Haniger was placed on the 10-day injured list.

Eight City of Johannesburg employees have been dismissed after being found guilty of manipulating a bid evaluation process and further authorising additional unjustified payments to a service provider, the City said on Sunday.
Economic Development mayoral committee member Leah Knott said the dismissals followed a lengthy disciplinary process.
This process revealed that the R54m budget for world wildlife conference COP17 had resulted in actual spend of close to R66m.
“It was found that various unjustified and unauthorised additional payments were made to the service provider above and beyond the R54m,” she said.
“The employees involved in the deliberate manipulation of the bid evaluation process and the illegal payments were based in the Departments of Economic Development, Group Legal, Finance as well as Environment and Infrastructure Services.”
The City indicated it had zero tolerance of corruption and the abuse of ratepayer’s money.
“The City will continue to act against corruption, and continue to dismiss employees who violate the trust and responsibility bestowed upon them to uphold good governance and serve residents with honesty and dedication,” said Knott.
Being an Instagram influencer isn’t always a good thing.
New research found that vulnerable young people who see online posts of self-harm – like cutting – may copy those destructive behaviours.
Almost one-third of teens and young adults who reported seeing self-harm posts on Instagram said they had performed the same or similar self-harming behaviour afterwards.
Seeing these images online “normalises” the behaviour, according study senior author Dan Romer. He’s research director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
“Vulnerable kids think, ‘Well, maybe that’s something I should consider doing,'” he said.
Romer noted that this problem goes beyond just Instagram. “Kids who don’t have mental health problems wouldn’t repeatedly self-harm. It’s vulnerable kids trying to relieve their distress,” he explained. But he added that this study indicates that these types of social media posts can be harmful to teens and young adults.
The researchers initially became concerned about the potential effects of self-harm posts after a British father said his 14-year-old daughter had looked at explicit self-harming images on Instagram before killing herself. The social media site has since said that graphic depictions of self-harm aren’t allowed in posts.
Self-harm typically refers to cutting, but can include other behaviours such as burning, hitting or head-banging. Self-harm isn’t usually suicidal, but people who engage in self-harm are at increased risk for suicide, the researchers said. Posts depicting self-harm on Instagram commonly show mild or moderate injuries. But some posts included bleeding flesh wounds from cutting an extremity.
Instagram has more than 500 million daily active users and more than 1 billion monthly users, according to the researchers. The social media site is very popular with young people.
Accidental exposure
The study included more than 700 teens and young adults (ages 18 to 29). Eighty percent of the study volunteers were women. They were interviewed twice, a month apart. The interviews occurred in May and June 2018, before Instagram said it would try to reduce graphic self-harm posts.
Almost half – 43% – said they had seen at least one self-harm post on Instagram. Many reported seeing more than one such post. Most – 80% – of those who reported seeing these posts said their exposure to them was accidental.
Almost two out of the three people surveyed said that the self-harm posts were emotionally disturbing.
Six out of 10 who saw these posts said they thought about how it might feel to do something like that. And 33% of those exposed to the self-harm posts said at the first interview that they had done the same or similar harm to themselves as a result of seeing the post.
During the second interview a month later, people who said they’d seen a self-harm post during the first interview were more likely to have self-harmed than people who hadn’t seen such a post.
Romer noted that the study cannot prove that seeing the posts directly led people to self-harm.
But, he said, “Kids who see these posts and are vulnerable probably aren’t going to get a good message.”
Communication with parents crucial
Romer said parents need to be concerned if they notice behaviours linked to depression in their kids, such as being online all the time, isolating themselves and sadness. These are kids that might be more susceptible to things they see online.
Since it’s nearly impossible to completely ban access to social media, Romer said open communication with parents is even more crucial for today’s young people.
Dr Alan Geller, a psychiatrist at NewYork-Presbyterian’s Gracie Square Hospital in New York City, agreed that communication is key.
“Adolescents have to understand your limits and expectations,” said Geller, who wasn’t involved in the study. “It’s like limit-setting for anything – alcohol or cigarettes or, now, marijuana. Children and teens have access to these risks and parents have a responsibility to set limits and clearly communicate those limits.”
And, he said, parents need to routinely check in with their teens about these challenges. Geller suggested doing so at least once a week.
Like Romer, Geller said that parents need to be on the lookout for signs, including repeated self-harm, that a teen or young adult is depressed or suicidal. If parents or other loved ones have concerns, teens and young adults should see a psychologist or psychiatrist for help.
The study was published online in New Media and Society.
Many questions remain about the motive behind Stellenbosch farmer Stefan Smit’s murder, with detectives reportedly not convinced that it was linked to the earlier occupation of his land.
Smit was killed at his home on the Louiesenhof farm a week ago in an apparent robbery, with detectives soon seen scouring the property for clues.
Police said at the time that four armed men entered his home through an unlocked door and shot him.
“His wife and a family friend, who were present at the time of the incident, survived the attack. The suspects fled with personal belongings and have not yet been arrested,” said Lt-Col Andre Traut.
His killers somehow managed to bypass security measures such as a double fencing system with electric fence and barbed wire.
No arrests have yet been made and police continue with their investigations, said Traut on Sunday.
According to Rapport, detectives had not found the common signs of a “usual farm attack”, nor anything to indicate that it was linked to the occupation of Smit’s land.
Agriculture MEC Ivan Meyer previously indicated that there was no link between the murder and the sale of Watergang, next to Louiesenhof, which Smit’s family owned via a trust.
Watergang was occupied last year by backyarders from nearby Kayamandi who renamed it Azania. Following an application for an interdict to remove them, the municipality eventually bought the land from the owners at R45 710 000.
The funds used to purchase the property came from a provincial human settlements department grant.
Stellenbosch Mayor Gesie van Deventer indicated the property was in the process of being transferred to the municipality.
Community leader Midas Wanana said Smit’s murder had shocked Azania’s residents. “It is very painful for us. We have sent our condolences to his family. What are they going to do without him?”
Johanna Petersen, who worked for Smit for 21 years, wondered who had “kept the door open” for his killers as he was very strict about closing the back door behind him, she told Rapport.
Smit’s best friend Pieter Haasbroek, told Sunday Times that R200 000 had disappeared from Smit’s safe a few weeks before his death.
A reliable source who feared being identified believed the murder could have been linked to the missing money, the newspaper reported.
Traut told News24 on Sunday that they had no record of that theft case.
Family friend John Houston told the Mail & Guardian that the motive could have been a farm murder, a robbery or vindictive action in connection with the land occupation.
The provincial government has called for the establishment of a rural safety unit and safety summit.
The police are asking anybody who has information about the case to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
