12 Creative Ways to Burn More Calories
Use these simple tweaks from top experts to make the most of every second of your exercise.
1. Jog through water. It's one of the most strenuous activities you can perform, since water is about 12 to 15 times as resistant as air. Running at your hardest, you can burn about 17 calories per minuteat least twice as much as you would burn running on pavement.
2. Start fast. Researchers at the College of New Jersey found that after a short warm-up, cyclists who punched up the intensity during the first half of their workouts and then cruised for the second half burned about 10 percent more calories than those who started slow and finished fast.
3. Warm up before you lift. A short spin on a bike or jog on a treadmill (enough to get your heart rate up) warms your muscles and tendons and gets fluids flowing in the joints; this increases your muscles' elasticity, allowing you to handle heavier weights and endure a longer workout.
4. Sign up for hip-hop. Surprising your body with a new dance or sport forces it to work harder because it's doing unfamiliar movements and using muscle groups in different ways. In the process, you'll burn more calories than you would by doing the same old routine.
5. Work out in the a.m. Research has shown that people who exercise in the morning keep their metabolism elevated for hours and thus get a jump on burning calories. Studies also show that people who start each day with a workout tend to stick with their programs longer.
6. Fuel up first. Grab a banana before you hit the gym, and it may actually help you slice off more calories in the long run. Shoot for 100 to 200 calories to nibble on: Yogurt, a piece of fruit, peanut butter and crackers, or half an energy bar are all excellent choices.
8. Do a triathlon at the gym. Simply split your 30- or 45- minute workout into three segmentsfor example, pedal on a stationary bike, power-walk on a treadmill, and step onto an elliptical trainer for 10- or 15-minute bursts with no rest in between. You'll keep up your heart rate and increase the burn.
9. Take to the sand. By walking or running on the beach, you'll use 20 to 50 percent more calories than you would going at the same pace on a hard trail or asphalt.
10. Don't slouch. Propping yourself on your arms while you're using the elliptical trainer, stair-climber, or treadmill makes the routine feel easier, but it gives you a less-challenging workout. Be sure to maintain a neutral spine to protect your back, keep your abs tight, and go easy on the handrails.
11. Use your arms. To make the most of a 45-minute workout, try total-body activities such as rowing, swimming, or cross-country skiing. You can even gain a slight uptick by exaggerating your arm swing while you walk.
12. Tune in to your muscles. Concentrate on using your abdominal muscles, hips, and quadriceps to power up your walk. And when you come up during a crunch, instead of allowing your mind to wander, focus on contracting your abs and moving your ribs closer to your hip bones.

News24.com | ‘Alexandra is quickly deteriorating every minute’ – community leader
“Alexandra is quickly deteriorating every minute, soon the entire township will be a slum.”
These were the words of community leader Sandile Mavundla, who took officials from the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and members of the Office of the Public Protector on an inspection of the area, as their probe into the Alexandra Renewal Project (ARP) kicked off on Friday morning.
The project was meant to address urbanisation and housing challenges in South Africa.
The SAHRC is conducting an inspection to probe possible violations of basic human rights and allegations of maladministration and improper conduct concerning the project.
The visit is part of an ongoing SAHRC hearing into the crisis in the township and the recent shutdown, in which residents protested.
President Cyril Ramaphosa set up an inter-governmental forum to deal with the grievances residents raised.
Interested parties have been invited to make written submissions to the SAHRC.
The tour on Friday began at the three-year-old Silvertown squatter camp, nestled between the Jukskei River and the old Alexandra Cemetery, under the guard of police and Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers.
The population at the squatter camp is increasing at a rapid pace, according to Mavundla. The visibly unhygienic conditions have led to the spread of diseases such as tuberculosis and asthma.
Almost every shack is illegally connected to electricity and some cables run above the river to their neighbours in another informal settlement.
Doors of communal toilets remain locked to prevent access for those who don’t clean them.
However, it means that some people have no other option but to relieve themselves on the edges of the river, under the pedestrian bridge and anywhere they find a “suitable” place.
Residents claim armed and brazen criminals rob people of their belongings day and night.
“Look now, the river is becoming narrower because of their activities. Everyone who comes to Alexandra is jostling for space and they squat everywhere, anywhere without fear. They are not only taking over Alexandra but are also destroying the environment,” said Mavundla.
Opposite the river, people dump rubbish into the river without hesitating. Others have toilets inside their shacks, and have connected the pipes so that human waste flows into the river.
“This is a daily, if not hourly activity. They don’t care. Jukskei is their dumping ground. They don’t care about the fish living in the river and i don’t think there is a single fish that remains in the river. We only see fish when it is flooded. No fish will survive here when people even throw dead animals in the river.
“Which normal person dumps anything into the river? The wold is facing a challenge of global warming and this behaviour is also contributing. Today, whenever it rains somewhere, the river is full to the extent that water floods their shacks.
“Those who build shacks on the edges of the river are often swept away by the river. We are tired of this behaviour, whenever, it rains in Gauteng. Journalists rush here to write stories about fatalities caused by the flooded river. We are turned into the laughing stock of the nation,” he said.
Margaret Dladla, 75, was among the first people who settled in the area in 2006 after government officials took them there to make way for the local Pan Africa Mall as part of the Alexandra Renewal Project.
She said they were temporarily relocated to Silvertown until the government found a piece of land where their RDP houses would be built. They were expected to be in the area for three months to a year.
“We are going to die here. I don’t see us being moved into those promised houses. It remained a dream and it will be. I was young and energetic when we arrived here. Today, I am suffering from tuberculosis, asthma, arthritis and bronchitis. This place has made me sick. It was quiet and peaceful until our neighbours near the river arrived.
“This place has become more unhygienic and unsafe. Gunshots are a day and night thing. We always lock our doors, not only for big rats that share our shacks with us but fearing for criminals who rob people here. I am telling you, if you didn’t have police escort, they were going to rob you of your belongings,” she said.
Mnikelo Ntombela, who arrived in the area four months ago, erected a shack below a pedestrian bridge.
“I have no place to stay and I found this one and built my home. We are not safe here. We share toilets without privacy. Imagine if someone can push down the toilet when you are inside? We have connected electricity from our neighbours,” he said.
His neighbour France Mbalate complained about the heavy stench in the area.
The tour headed to the cemetery which attracted criminals, they were told.
Mavundla said people steal palisade fencing made of cement, which was meant to cover the cemetery.
“The dead are no more in peace since we have squatters here. People here steal everything and some people have no dignity. They dump rubbish and relieve themselves here. We are being forced to come and clean this graveyard. This is a grave site which is meant to be peaceful. However, we have people who were buried many, many years ago,” Mavundla said.
Both reports from the SAHRC and the Office of the public Protector will be used at the hearing.
News24.com | How to be a voting day alarm clock: ‘Sweetheart let’s go vote’
File: ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa at the Limpopo ANC manifesto rollout. (Twitter)
President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged all South African citizens, those who share beds with partners, and those who sleep alone, to wake up on May 8 and go cast their votes.
“If you sleep with someone in your bed, wake them up and say, ‘sweetheart, let us go and vote’… If you sleep alone, I am saying you wake up and wake up everybody else and go and vote,” Ramaphosa said.
He was speaking to thousands of party supporters who descended to Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday to witness the party’s Siyanqoba final rally. Ramaphosa urged citizens to go out in numbers and ensure that they vote on the day. He also pleaded that people “give the ANC another chance”.
He said, he himself is going to ask his wife to wake him up early on the day so that they can go and vote.
READ: RAMAPHOSA’S FULL SPEECH
“I am going to say to my wife…wake me up and say, ‘sweetheart let’s go and vote’.
“If you are used to waking up and doing other things, I say you don’t do those things, you will do them after voting. We just all wake up and go and vote,” said Ramaphosa.
Ramaphosa said the party has worked hard in the past months to ensure that they garnered enough support from the people.
He added that there was no other political party that deserved the people’s votes because the “ANC is the only one that can take South Africa forward”.
Ramaphosa also thanked ANC elections head Fikile Mbalula for “razzmatazz-ing” the party’s election campaigns.
South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) says it welcomes Ramaphosa’s speech, adding that it has in the last months joined the ANC-led alliance in traversing South Africa to mobilise support for the party.
It said Ramaphosa’s speech captured the concerns which South Africans relayed to the leadership of the alliance during the election campaign trail.
“President Ramaphosa has correctly assured South Africans that the [governing] party has heard them and will accordingly act to renew governance in the country.
“SANCO calls on the President to ensure implementation of the ANC manifesto after the elections in order to inspire public confidence in government,” Sanco said in a statement.

Sport24.co.za | Bulls, Jaguares: Who has stronger tour stomach?
Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer
Cape Town – The Bulls and Jaguares ended the latest round of Super Rugby 2019 as arguably the two best-placed sides in the SA conference … and how they fare in respective, four-match Australasian tours shortly could have a very key bearing on who wins the group.
While it is important to note that all five teams undoubtedly remain in the running – including for broader playoffs places – in this crazily fluctuating campaign, that pair are the healthiest-looking on paper right now.
Both won relatively tense affairs at home over the weekend – the Jaguares against the Stormers and the Bulls against the Waratahs – which meant that the Pretoria-based outfit moved back to the top of the yo-yo conference.
They are level on points with the Sharks (28), but Robert du Preez’s charges have played an extra game, so sport only five remaining pre-knockout fixtures to the Bulls’ and third-placed Jaguares’ (they are one meagre point adrift) six each.
On the plus side for the Sharks, who put up such a gallant battle against the title-holding Crusaders on Friday for a 21-21 draw, their Australasian tour is one match from completion, and it looks pretty winnable against a Chiefs combo flirting ever more dangerously with anonymity as far as any finals series hopes are concerned.
But with only two of their five remaining tussles earmarked for Kings Park and one involving the increasingly perilous trip to Buenos Aires in the second-last round, their position is perhaps not quite as buoyant as it may seem for eventual conference bragging rights.
Fascinatingly, then, the Bulls and Jaguares will spend several of the next few weeks not too far apart in Antipodean climes, and watching each other’s progress extremely keenly – the latter no doubt increasingly emboldened about the likelihood of winning the group for a maiden time.
The South Americans travel almost immediately, as they start out their quartet of assignments (like the Bulls, two in Australia and two in New Zealand) against the Highlanders on Saturday; after that, it’s the Hurricanes, Waratahs and Reds.
Before they step on a long-haul flight themselves, the Bulls first have to focus hugely on Friday night’s potential humdinger against the ‘Saders at Loftus, albeit probably bolstered by the return of veteran livewire hooker Schalk Brits from his suspension.
Just as beating the Waratahs was of enormous importance (they blew hot and cold in the 28-21 outcome, showing alarming defensive doziness at times but also exhibiting an illuminatingly commanding scrum), knocking over the Cantabrians – seldom over-awed by Highveld conditions these days – would also be manna from heaven ahead of the gruelling trek.
The Bulls are rostered on their tour against, in this order, the Rebels, Brumbies, Blues and Highlanders, and do not have a healthy recent reputation for prosperity across the Indian Ocean.
In the Jaguares’ favour, by stark contrast, they had a quite sublime quartet of results in their 2018 equivalent trip to Australasia, remarkably beating all of the Rebels, Brumbies, Blues and Chiefs.
It is difficult to imagine bookies and observers believing lightning will strike twice and the Argentinean national team in disguise going “four from four” there once again, but even a 50 percent tour record, say, could be invaluable in their stiffening quest to embarrass South Africa by stealing the conference.
If the specifically SA-based sides needed any further motivation to improve their consistency over the almost certainly nail-biting closing weeks of ordinary season, they should take note that the Jaguares boast the dream fixture on paper in the very last round: Sunwolves at home.
The Stormers, who at least snatched a late losing bonus point from their match in Buenos Aires on Saturday, are the only team in the competition enjoying a bye in the coming round and will feel they deserve it after a tough, notably travel-heavy spell.
Next weekend’s fixtures (home teams first, all kick-offs SA time):
Friday: Blues v Hurricanes, 09:35; Rebels v Reds, 11:45; Bulls v Crusaders, 19:10. Saturday: Highlanders v Jaguares, 07:15; Chiefs v Sharks, 09:35; Lions v Waratahs, 15:05. Sunday: Brumbies v Sunwolves, 08:05. Bye: Stormers.
