Sport24.co.za | Blitzbok young gun wants to leave own footprint
Cape Town – He was due to make his Springbok Sevens debut at the Hong Kong Sevens a year ago, but an untimely ankle injury dashed Angelo Davids’ dream.
This time around, however, Davids is part of the Blitzboks team that will take to the hallowed turf of Hong Kong Stadium hoping to follow in the footsteps of idols such as Rosko Specman and Seabelo Senatla.
The 19-year-old winger was earmarked to play at the event in 2018, when Blitzbok coach Neil Powell and SA Rugby Sevens Academy Manager Marius Schoeman opted for a youthful squad to travel East, while the senior players stayed in Stellenbosch to prepare for the Commonwealth Games in Australia 10 days later.
The move worked brilliantly from a World Rugby Sevens Series point of view, as the young guns won bronze and the hearts of the crowd in Hong Kong, but an ankle injury left Davids watching the action on TV back in South Africa.
He recalls that disappointment, but also the joy when he was told last week he will be travelling to Hong Kong as a Blitzbok after all.
“I missed out and it hurt, but unfortunately I had an ankle injury and could not play – since then, I have been dreaming of my next opportunity,” Davids said after his first field session in Hong Kong.
Just as his injury served as an opportunity for someone else last year, Davids was named in the squad after Muller du Plessis pulled out a week ago due to a leg injury, and for the former Stellenberg High School star, it came as a bit of a shock.
“I did not quite expect the call-up to Hong Kong, especially since the guys did so well in Vancouver,” Davids explained.
“It is never nice to cover for an injury, but these things happen in rugby.”
He has been with the squad long enough know to know what is expected, but he still plans to keep a close eye on Blitzboks captain, Siviwe Soyizwapi, this week. He is likely to replace the skipper on the wing to earn his debut.
Davids admits that he has learned a lot from former Blitzboks, Seabelo Senatla and Rosko Specman.
“If I can contribute the way they did, with their speed and feet, I will be very happy,” he said.
“In the end though, I need to be Angelo Davids, not a copy of someone else. I am very keen to go out and contribute.”
For stalwart Werner Kok, playing in Hong Kong will also be an interesting challenge this time around after being moved to the forwards – a new responsibility he is embracing.
“I have played as a forward occasionally, but this will be a nice, new challenge,” Kok said.
“I am comfortable with some of the tasks, but jumping in the lineout is new to me. It went well in training last week, but the challenge will be in the actual matches.” Kok may have played 218 matches for the Blitzboks, but there will be some nervous excitement this weekend.
“It is a new role for me and I am keen to try it. Being here and being part of the squad is motivation enough to always give your best,” said Kok, who was named Player of the Tournament the last time he visited Hong Kong, in 2017.
“We are going through some system changes as a squad and everyone is excited about it. The future of Springbok Sevens look bright.”
Blitzboks squad for Hong Kong:
1. Ryan Oosthuizen (13 tournaments, 61 matches, 65 points, 13 tries)
2. Sako Makata (2 tournaments, 9 matches, 0 points)

4. Zain Davids (18 tournaments, 88 matches, 60 points, 12 tries)
5. Werner Kok (43 tournaments, 218 matches, 485 points, 97 tries)
6. Kurt-Lee Arendse (one tournament, two matches, 0 points)
7. Branco du Preez (67 tournaments, 339 matches, 1120 points; 88 tries, 387 conversions, 1 penalty, 1 drop goal)
8. Selvyn Davids (11 tournaments, 53 matches, 237 points, 27 tries, 51 conversions)
9. Justin Geduld (42 tournaments; 217 matches, 904 points – 95 tries, 213 conversions, 1 penalty)

News24.com | NMB Mayor Bobani faces another motion of no confidence
The Patriotic Alliance (PA) in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) says it has tabled another motion of no confidence in Mayor Mongameli Bobani.
Council will meet on Thursday, when the motion – this time in terms of rule 24 – is expected to be debated, PA councillor Marlon Daniels said.
READ: NMB Mayor Bobani ‘not even shaken’ as another motion for his removal looms
In the notice, which News24 has seen, Daniels stated that Bobani couldn’t be “trusted” in office.
“Councillor Mongameli Bobani has done very little to none to the betterment of the lives of the poor communities,” he said.
In February, the party filed an urgent notice of intent to lodge a motion of no confidence against Bobani, which failed in the city council on March 1.
Not sticking to agreements
Daniels had initially filed the previous motion in terms of rule 25, and was seconded by the ACDP’s Lance Grootboom.
However, the council – minus the DA caucus – rejected the tabling of the motion when it was announced on the day, resulting in it not being voted on.
On the latest move, Daniels said: “This motion is on the council agenda, meaning then that it must be debated. There is no permission needed, it will now [come] before council and every party will have a chance to debate the motion.”
Daniels said the current coalition was not sticking to agreements that had been set when a new local government was formed, following the ousting of Athol Trollip.
“In simple terms, the agreement was that the minority parties will be the face of the metro, and currently they are not the face of the metro,” he said.
He accused Bobani of taking instructions from the ANC’s Andile Lungisa on how to run the metro.
He said the ANC was dictating what and how things should be done in the metro through Lungisa.
“I have had meetings with the minority parties; some of them came to me personally to talk to me on how unhappy they are with the new coalition government and it’s only because Bobani and Andile are the two people cracking [the] whip,” Daniels said.
When News24 contacted Lungisa, he said Marlon was “taking chances”; “loved the limelight”, and that the motion would not pass. “It won’t pass; he is just seeking attention. There is no substantive motion.”
Daniels said he trusted that during the debate, all those who were not in favour of the motion would be persuaded to think otherwise.
Hopeful
He added he was hopeful that council would most likely remove Bobani.
“There is lobbying that is taking place at the moment, because all we need to do now is to get two more councillors to support the motion and then the motion [will carry].”
“I think there is a very good chance of us to get this motion through; if the ones who are complaining in the coalition decide to stand on principles and do what is right and not be bothered about positions that they currently have,” said Daniels.
In 2017, the PA officially withdrew from the NMB coalition after it failed to put forward Daniels as the preferred candidate to take over the position of deputy mayor.
Bobani could not be reached for comment.

Health24.com | 5 things you should know about getting a flu shot
Winter 2018 saw an intense outbreak of influenza in the Northern Hemisphere. It is therefore vital for South Africans to get their “flu shot”. According to Netcare, the last flu cycle in the Northern Hemisphere resulted in the death of 30 infants in the US alone.
Dr Annamarie Richter, medical director at Netcare’s Primary Care Division, stated on their website that a new vaccination was produced to match changes in two of three flu strains, and that this latest vaccination is now being made available throughout South Africa.
Still unsure whether you need the flu shot or not? Here’s what you should know:
1. It’s never too late, but rather do it sooner
While the middle of winter is not too late to receive the flu shot, remember that it takes about two weeks for the body to produce the necessary protective antibodies. Give your body enough time to develop adequate protection by getting your flu shot sooner rather than later.
2. You’re not only protecting yourself, but also other more vulnerable people
“Flu is not so bad for me, I recover quite quickly,” you may argue. Not only does the influenza virus change strains yearly, producing more severe symptoms, but you as an individual should also protect anyone vulnerable close to you, such as the elderly, infants, and those with a compromised immune system.
Some people argue that flu is simply a more severe form of the cold, but it is potentially fatal. According to Harvard Medical School, flu activity significantly increased in the US during their last winter, with the A(H3N2) virus being the most prevalent, leading to increased hospitalisations, especially in children and those over 65.
And even if you don’t show symptoms, you may still be spreading the virus without realising it – about 20% to 30% of those carrying the virus have had no symptoms.
3. You need to get an annual flu shot
You need to keep your vaccination up to date to make sure you are protected against the latest strains, as the influenza virus mutates yearly. So even if you had your shot last year, the 2019 vaccination was developed to fight the most prevalent strains of the latest flu season.
4. The flu shot will not give you the flu
Repeat after us, “You will not get the flu from the flu vaccination.” While some people experience minor side-effects such as localised swelling, mild fever and soreness, the best way to protect yourself against the flu remains the flu vaccine.
However, even if you still get flu after the flu vaccination, your symptoms will be milder.
5. There are other measures to protect yourself against the flu
While the flu vaccination is a key step in protecting yourself, it shouldn’t end there. Boost your immunity by including loads of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet. If you start feeling run down, get more sleep. Avoid close contact with people who have the flu, and make sure you regularly wash your hands. If you are sick, stay away from work to avoid the flu from spreading. Not sure how long you should book yourself off sick? Read here.
Get your flu vaccination
If you haven’t had your shot yet, get it from a credible pharmacy or medical professional to make sure it is the most up-to-date version.

Pretorius concludes his line of questioning, and Oellermann is excused. Zondo thanks Oellermann and reminds him that he may be called back to the commission if they require anything further from him.
Pretorius requests a short adjournment before they proceed with the next two witnesses, which Pretorius says could span several hours.
Zondo grants a 15-minute adjournment so that the legal team can prepare the next witness and the related evidence bundles.
