Information Technology is a service division of the University that enables the University to reach its goals by using information and communication technology in an optimal manner. Academic ICT is a division of IT that is responsible for ICT support of learning and teaching, of research and of social impact – the social responsibility function of the University. For learning and teaching, the division provides services such as SunLearn (our learning management system based on Moodle) and SunStream – our video streaming and recording service, which is used for streaming lectures. The service delivery is provided in collaboration with the Centre for Learning Technologies.
Duties:
- Managing and planning the University’s learning and teaching support services, systems and platforms
- Relationship management: Managing relations between IT and divisions that provide a service to lecturers and students; ensuring that the IT learning technology systems team and the staff of other service divisions – such as Centre for Learning Technologies (CLT), as well as computer laboratory managers – work together as a team; managing relationships between suppliers and other tertiary institutions by coordinating and negotiating
- Problem management: taking ownership of problems; ensuring that incidents and problems with the eLearning system and related systems are analysed and resolved according to ITIL standards; liaising with service departments, suppliers and IT technical staff
- Operations: ensuring that the eLearning and related platforms and systems (including video streaming, content management) are operated optimally, including the year-to-year roll over of modules on the eLearning platform; understanding and assisting with automation of user administration on the platforms; establishing standards for technology in teaching and learning in collaboration with the IT architect and system administrators, as well as stakeholders such as the Centre for Learning Technologies and the computer lab managers
- Reporting: providing monthly management information on the use and operation of the platforms
- Technology reconnaissance: building a vision of Learning Technology and investigating relevant developments; advising IT as well as the management of the Centre for Learning Technologies about the relevant technology
- License management: ensuring that licenses for the relevant platforms are properly managed with regard to licensing metrics and conditions, as well as budgeting and annual renewals
- Human resource management: managing and handling development, training and performance management of staff and contractors that work in this division and report to the manager: Learning Technology Systems
- Determining and documenting needs: understanding user needs and processes and writing specifications for new systems, as well as enhancements to existing systems
- Liaising and coordinating within IT to ensure that systems are developed according to IT architecture standards and integrated with the other systems of the University
Requirements:
- A relevant NQF 8 qualification, such as an applicable Honours degree
- At least four years’ applicable ICT experience
- At least two years’ experience with learning management systems
- At least five years of service at a tertiary education institution
- Show strategic leadership, expand the services of the division, show innovative thinking and inspire the team members
- Excellent knowledge of Information and Communication Technology and an understanding of the learning process, and of how to promote the learning process through the use of information technology
- Proven knowledge of, or experience in, the use of information and information systems to improve processes or solve problems
- Good understanding of a university and its functioning
- Good communication abilities with proven verbal, written and report writing skills
- Good interpersonal skills including a proven track record as team manager and of improving collaboration
- Must be an excellent relationship manager with negotiating skills
- Proven project management experience
- Ability to operate under pressure
Recommendations:
- A Master’s degree
- A degree in Information Science, or Computer Science, or Engineering
- A management qualification
- Proven analytical abilities
- Knowledge of the Moodle learning management system
