Environment:

An innovative e-commerce platform wants you as their next highly creative and forward-thinking engineering team lead (Database). The successful incumbent should have a Degree in Computer Science and should be efficient in the following technologies: RDMS, MySQL, PostgreSQL and Linux.

Duties:

• Lead you will lead a group of developers and testers constantly striving for quality solutions that are delivered on time, within budget and scope, and drive a culture of quality and personal accountability.
• You will need a strong understanding of large-scale e-commerce platforms, have experience installing, managing, and operating database systems.
• You will have a good understanding of architectural and design best practices.
• You will be an advocate of Agile engineering practices and you will have prior line management experience with a track record of keeping highly skilled developers motivated.
• This is an exciting opportunity to lead a growing team of engineers working on company’s ambitious development roadmap.
• This is a hands-on role: you should expect to spend at least 50% of your time working with others on your team. The other 50% of your time will be split between architectural and strategic planning with peers and senior developers and the day-to-day people management and development required of a high-performing and successful team.

Requirements:

Basic qualifications:

• Degree in Computer Science, or other software engineering degree.
• Excellent problem-solving skills.
• Experience leading a team technically, with a focus on a very high-quality output.
• Experience mentoring, coaching, and developing others technically.
• Experience working within an Agile team, and an advocate of that culture.
• Experience with an RDMS such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
• Experience in Linux.
• Significant technical experience and a proven track record of database schema design, and query optimization.
• A thorough understanding of database principles.

Preferred skills:

• Post graduate degree preferred.
• Experience with and an understanding of line management responsibility for a technical team.
• Experience in operating a database system that supports distributed, transactional, and highly available systems.
• A thorough understanding of software engineering practices and best practices, including Agile software development, source code control systems, the use of IDEs, and testing tools.
• Experience working with non RDMS systems such as MongoDB and Elasticsearch.
• Experience working with the AWS and/or Azure platforms.

Details (it’s all about the details)

Position term: Permanent/long-term (one-year minimum)

Required experience: Two to three years

Fluent in: Adobe Premiere, After Effects (mid-level experience) + Photoshop and Illustrator 

Probation period: Three months

Location: Cape Town

Must have:

• The ability to work autonomously as well as under the direction of others (don’t worry we give you freedom but not enough so you feel alone)
• Open to learning new skills and assisting on shoots (everyone who hops onto a job outside of their ‘9-5’ gets paid extra. We encourage this)
• Excellent communication skills and positive attitude (we’re all about that eye contact)
• Strong sense of aesthetics, composition and the ability to tell a story with creative editing and strong graphic sense and skills
• Must be an artist who fights the norm and is able to tell a badass story no matter what the brief
