JOHANNESBURG – The South African Informal Traders Alliance is concerned about government’s plan to tighten tobacco laws.
The Health Department wants to ban all outdoor and indoor smoking areas. It also wants to outlaw cigarette advertising at retailers.
The South African Informal Traders Alliance says the move will cripple their industry.
Jerry Tlhopane, from the alliance says, “You see when you talk about cigarettes almost every street in the country you will find people selling it. It is putting bread to the table of many people. Personally, I am supplementing my income by selling cigarette at Everton Mall.”
He says that if government approves this legislation, cigarettes will have to be hidden in retail stores and the lack of display will hinder the choices that consumers should have when purchasing a product.
