Cape Town – Springbok Sevens forward, Zain Davids, is relishing the experience of starting in the Blitzboks team and embracing the responsibility with great enthusiasm.
The 21 year-old prop started all six matches the team played last weekend in Hamilton, which was a new experience for the former Rondebosch Boys High player, especially since that position usually belongs to team captain, Philip Snyman.
This, however, is no longer the case as Blitzboks coach, Neil Powell, continues to find ways to extend the careers of his stalwarts, while also ensuring that the younger players gain more experience with an eye on the future. In Davids’ case, the coach felt he was ready to start after accumulating 15 tournament caps thus far, and playing in the Rugby Sevens World Cup last year.
Davids, who is determined not to fluff this opportunity, said: “It was a big surprise when coach told me I will be starting. We are a squad and a family, so we have each other’s backs, but I still didn’t expected it, as Philip is the captain.
“Even Philip supported the decision, and that made me very proud and humble.
The two time gold medal HSBC World Rugby World Series winner, who made his Blitzboks’ debut in 2017, added: “I trust the processes in the team and I know that will comfort me in games. The rest of the squad will also look after me, just as I look after them.”
The vote of confidence and support from his captain was a particularly huge boost for Davids, who also represented the Junior Springboks as a loose forward.
“Hearing from Philip that he backed me to take up a starting berth meant a lot,” he said. “I am very determined to make sure I don’t disappoint that trust. These are big shoes to fill, but I will do my absolute best to contribute in my new role,” said Davids.
The Blitzboks will be looking to improve on their fourth place at the Hamilton Sevens in New Zealand when the Sydney Sevens tournament gets underway this weekend.
Western Cape police have appealed for help as they search for missing 8-year-old girl Jeneva Diergal, who was last seen playing outside a relative’s house in Klawer on the West Coast.
She disappeared on January 25 and since then, there has been no sight of the partially paralysed and mentally disabled girl.
The Pink Ladies organisation, which helps find missing children, indicated in a flyer that Jeneva may have left her 4-year-old cousin, who she had been playing with, to run in the direction of her mother and aunt as they were on their way to the shop. She disappeared afterwards.
She was last seen wearing a pink Barbie top with black leggings and she was barefoot.
“If you know the whereabouts of eight-year-old Jeneva Diergal of Klawer, kindly contact Captain Leon Matthys of Vredendal FCS on 082 334 8862, as she is being sought,” spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut urged.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) boss Robert McBride is taking his fight to keep his job to court.
McBride has filed an urgent application in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria asking the court to declare Police Minister Bheki Cele’s decision not to renew his appointment as IPID executive director “unconstitutional, unlawful and invalid”.
McBride’s term at IPID comes to an end on February 28 this year.
In a curt letter last week, dated January 24, Cele informed McBride that he had forwarded his decision not to renew McBride’s contract, to Parliament for consideration.

But in his affidavit filed at the High Court on Tuesday, McBride stated that the decision was not one that the minister was empowered to take.
He said the decision must be taken by the National Assembly’s Portfolio Committee on Police, being the parliamentary committee responsible for appointing the executive.
“By purporting to exercise this power, the minister has undermined the independence of IPID. The minister has also contravened Section 6(3) of the IPID Act.
“Further, and in any event the minister’s decision is also unlawful in that he has failed to provide any reasons for his decision despite being called upon to do so. His decision is thus also unlawful for being irrational,” McBride said.
He also said the Portfolio Committee had thus far been prevented from taking the decision because of Cele’s conduct.
“The minister began by unilaterally taking the decision himself and allowing the portfolio committee to play his role,” he said.
“I emphasise that I accept that I have no right to have my appointment renewed, nor any guarantee that the employment contract will be renewed. However, I do have a right to have the decision regarding renewal taken lawfully by the body lawfully vested with this power – that is the portfolio committee – rather than the minister.”

After having a stroke, heart attack or cardiac arrest, people are less likely to be employed than their healthy peers, new research shows.
Even if they are working, they may earn significantly less than people who haven’t had a stroke or heart event, the investigators found.
A drop in yearly earnings
Although the majority of people who have one of these serious health scares do end up back at work, about 20% of those who had a stroke weren’t back at work three years later.
Meanwhile, about 5% of those who had a heart attack hadn’t gone back to work, while 13% of those who’d had cardiac arrest weren’t back on the job after three years. (Cardiac arrest is when your heart suddenly stops beating.)
The study also found an average drop in yearly earnings of more than $13 000 (±R178 000) after a stroke, about $11,000 (±R150 000) after cardiac arrest and nearly $4,000 (±R55 000) after a heart attack.
“When we look at the impact of health events, we need to look not only at short-term, easy-to-measure outcomes like life and death. Quality of life and economic well-being are equally important to people,” said study author Dr Allan Garland. He is a professor of medicine and community health sciences at the University of Manitoba and Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg in Canada.
Garland said that most people want to work, so it’s important to figure out who’s most likely to lose their ability to work and earn. Then, he added, “we need policies from government and employers to try to help these people get back to work and be more productive.”
Canadian database
Serious health events like heart attacks, cardiac arrest and strokes can be life-altering, the study authors noted. These conditions may lead to a loss in some abilities, which might make it difficult to return to work or to return to work full-time.
One-third of heart attacks, 40% of cardiac arrests and one-quarter of strokes occur in people who are 65 or younger, according to the report.
To see what impact these events had on people’s working lives, the researchers were able to use a Canadian database that links hospital records and tax return information. They looked at data from 2005 to 2013.
The investigators looked for people who had experienced a heart attack, cardiac arrest or stroke who had been working during the two years before their health event. They were all between the ages of 40 and 61.
Garland’s team compared these groups to a much larger group of similar healthy people, and looked at the three-year period after the serious health event.
Need for stress prevention
“These kinds of unemployment and lost earnings have broad consequences across society. In the United States, it can lead to a loss of health insurance and lead to the phenomenon of medical bankruptcy. Those costs are borne by governments and employers,” Garland said.
Dr Terrence Sacchi, chief of cardiology at NewYork-Presbyterian Methodist Hospital in New York City, said that someone who has had a heart attack has a much better chance of returning to work than someone who is much sicker, such as someone who’s had a stroke or cardiac arrest.
Sacchi said the study shows the need to stress prevention.
“Modify all the risk factors you can. If you have diabetes, treat it. If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, treat it. If you smoke, quit. Eat a healthy diet and exercise to decrease the chances of this happening again,” he advised.
Sacchi also recommended that people enter a cardiac rehabilitation programme, and “if you feel you’re capable, you can get back to work.”
The findings were published in the CMAJ.
