News24.com | Matric results: Where are the missing 400 000 pupils who started Grade 1 in 2007?
Education analyst Nic Spaull has raised concerns about the 2018 National Senior Certificate results announced on Thursday, among them the high dropout rate of pupils before they reach Grade 12.
“Until Minister of Education Angie Motshekga starts reporting and emphasising the 400 000 kids that dropped out of school (no proof of their educ status whatsoever, almost certainly unemployed, and they don’t go to FET, btw),” Spaull tweeted.
Using a graph, Spaull illustrates that more than 1 002 500 pupils registered for Grade 1 in 2007 and only 512 700, 51%, wrote matric examinations in 2018.
Only 400 761, about 40%, passed matric, while 172 000, or 17%, obtained bachelor passes.
In response, Department of Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga tweeted a graph apparently demonstrating that the department does track pupil progression through its system. He said the minister did not shy away from addressing the dropout rate, so Spaull was “not the only person raising the issue”.
Spaull further stated that for every 100 female matriculants there are only 82 male matriculants. The main reason for this, he said, was that girls do better than boys in most subjects and drop out at lower rates on average.
“Every year when I read through the 2018 matric reports, I’m shocked by the statistics on learners with special needs. Only 12% of the South African population live in the Western Cape but 64% of special needs matric candidates come from the Western Cape,” he continued.
He wrote that a trick most provinces pull is to encourage academically weaker pupils to write matric exams as multiple exam opportunity candidates. This means they register as part-time students and can write their exams in two parts so their results don’t count towards the statistics being celebrated now.
A sleight of hand
Professor Jonathan Jansen tweeted that watching the minister announce the matric results every year was like going to a magic show as a teenager.
“You (and the magician) know that what you’re seeing is sleight of hand but you stay quiet because you are surrounded by many who actually believe in miracles,” he wrote.
On Thursday both the EFF and the DA said there was little to celebrate about this year’s matric results when there are hundreds of thousands of pupils who entered Grade 1 but didn’t make it to Grade 12.

“These learners are either stuck repeating grades or being lost to the ANC’s failing education system completely. The minister admits that retention should be part of the measure for matric, but conveniently forgets this each January when it’s time to release matric results,” DA education spokesperson Nomsa Marchesi, said.
Marchesi raised concerns about the impact of the new multiple exam opportunity policy on the 2018 marks and argued that the real matric pass rate for 2018 is 37.6%, not 78.2%.

News24.com | ANC confident North West list conference won’t impact on national process
Eight hundred names have already been put forward for ANC candidates to head to the National Assembly.
However, speaking to Eyewitness News on Friday, ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte said that the party would end up placing the top 25%, which is about 200 nominees, on the party’s list for Parliament, and then discuss where the remaining candidates will be placed.
The party is currently holding its national list conference in Durban to decide who it will send to Parliament and the various legislatures after the national elections. The conference is expected to end on Saturday.
All the provinces have concluded their provincial list conferences except the North West.
The North West is holding its provincial conference on Saturday, but Duarte told Eyewitness News that the party did not think it would affect the national list process. She said the provincial conference would deal mainly with who goes to legislature.
On Wednesday, the North West postponed its provincial list conference for the second time, News24 reported.
The initial list conference, which was meant to take place in December, was postponed after it was marred by violence that left some delegates injured.
eNCA reported that President Cyril Ramaphosa and other key ANC national executive committee (NEC) members are attending this weekend’s conference. Former president Jacob Zuma is also in Durban.
After the list conference is concluded an ordinary NEC meeting, where the January 8th statement is likely to be discussed, is expected to be held.
On Thursday, the ANC said it would transport tens of thousands of its members in more than 1 300 buses to Durban for the party’s manifesto launch and January 8th celebration, which take place on January 12, reported News24.
ANC elections head Fikile Mbalula said the event would be a “humdinger”.
“Primarily, people from KZN will attend, but others from across the provinces will also descend on Durban. We are ready for the manifesto and have done a lot of consultation on it.”

Cape Town – Faf du Plessis was relieved on the second day of the second Test between South Africa and Pakistan on Friday at Newlands.
Despite his excellence with the captain’s armband, Du Plessis has struggled with bat of late.
In 2018, Du Plessis only managed to score 463 runs at an average of 24.36 in 20 innings – ending the year with a historic pair in Centurion.
Striding out into the middle in the second over of the day, Du Plessis knew he needed to not only do the talking off the field, but on it too.
And he delivered in style.
The Proteas skipper stood tall as he made a brilliant knock of 103 off 226 balls on a misbehaving Newlands pitch.
Deliveries were inconsistent with Du Plessis – on more than one occasion – hit on the hands due to the unexpected and awkward bounce.

In 9 Tests played at the iconic Newlands venue, Du Plessis recorded his first Test ton at the venue, in front of the 10 000 spectators seated in Cape Town.
Du Plessis’ ninth Test century was completed soon after he built a Test-saving 156-run partnership with Temba Bavuma, who scored 75.
Bavuma attributed their fifth-wicket stand to his skipper’s calming influence that saw the Proteas end on Day 2 with a first innings lead of 205 runs.
“It was a mammoth innings from him. I think between us, he took more balls on the body, but he still managed to stay focused and commit to the next ball,” Bavuma told reporters after the second day’s play.
“We just tried to keep each other positive, try and keep the intensity up. He’s one batter that is willing to share his game plan and what he’s trying to do with the bowlers and allows you to evaluate your own game plan. He is a calming influence and that’s his biggest trait.”
Despite his objections to the pitch, Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur earnestly praised the Proteas skipper on his performance with the bat.
“I thought Faf was excellent today, and I thought the temperament he showed through the day was outstanding. I really do,” said Arthur.
