The DA reckons that the R21bn SAA loan may be too good to be true.
On Sunday, City Press reported that a consortium of local and international investors had made an unsolicited loan offer to SAA of R21bn to save the financially crippled parastatal.
On Monday, the DA said it would be writing to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni to urge him to put pressure on his Cabinet colleagues to carefully consider the proposed private loan.

The party’s Alf Lees said that he had noted reports suggesting that the loan is conditional on the consortium being given a 51% equity share in the national carrier.
“The reported offer of the R21bn loan looks attractive on the surface. The condition of the consortium taking a 51% equity share is particularly attractive as it would ensure that the ANC government loses all influence over SAA which would be free to conduct business without political interference that has dogged the airline in the past,” Lees added.

He said if the loan offer was to be considered, the agreement should not be backed by any government or taxpayer guarantees, and it should be used primarily to extinguish all existing loans to SAA that are backed by guarantees.
“All existing government taxpayer guarantees of R19.1bn must be withdrawn from SAA and no further guarantees must be issued,” said Lees.
“The R21bn offer may be too good to be true and, in the end, the only solution will be to put SAA into business rescue.”

The cash-strapped national carrier is reported to have had recent injection of just over R3bn from lenders providing short-term loans, bringing the airline’s loans, repayable by the end of March 2019, to a R13bn.
“Unless robust action is taken to put SAA into business rescue or an equity partner with deep pockets is found, the massive taxpayer bailouts of SAA will continue unabated,” Lees said.
The police must do everything in their power to hunt down and arrest the driver who fled from the accident scene where Mpumalanga safety and security MEC spokesperson Joseph Mabuza died on Sunday, said Cope.
Mabuza was travelling from a work assignment on his motorbike when he died.

“It is quite clear to us that Mabuza was one of the dedicated and committed servants of the people in South Africa,” said Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem.
“We once again call upon all road users to respect and obey the rules of the road, especially now during the festive season, we urge all road users to drive in consideration of themselves, families, and other road users,” Bloem added.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said that a manhunt had been launched for the driver of a vehicle who left the crime scene before authorities arrived.
At the same time, The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) labeled Mabuza as an excellent communicator, whose death has been painful to many, and should remind South Africans of their responsibility on the roads and the growing number of motorists who lost their lives during the holiday season.
“We will miss his constant reminder that the road belongs to all road users. I do hope that law enforcement officers in Mpumalanga and across the country will be inspired by the energy and commitment of Mabuza to road safety and to be more vigilant, and harsh on those who break the laws of the road,” Mabaya concluded.
Cape Town – Proteas speedster Dale Steyn could be mere hours away from writing his name into the South African cricketing history books.

As of Christmas eve 2018, the 35-year-old Steyn is tied with fellow Proteas legend Shaun Pollock on 421 Test wickets.
That could all change come Boxing Day and the first Test against the visiting Pakistan team in Centurion.
It would take a brave man to bet against Steyn picking up at least one wicket at SuperSport Park to break out of that tie with Pollock.
It’s taken Steyn 88 Tests to reach that mark. It took Pollock 108.
But where do Steyn – and Pollock for that matter – rank in the list of all-time leading Test wicket-takers?
The answer?
In a tie for 11th.
There’s a log-jam immediately above Steyn in the list and “only” 14 more scalps will see him jump all the way to seventh in the rankings.
That’s an entirely feasible prospect one would think in the upcoming three Tests against Pakistan and the two that will follow thereafter against Sri Lanka in February – also on SA soil.
The first ball at SuperSport Park on Wednesday, December 26 is due to be bowled at 10:00.
All-time leading Test wicket-takers:
1. Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) – 800
2. Shane Warne (Australia) – 708
3. Anil Kumble (India) – 619
4. James Anderson (England) – 565
5. Glenn McGrath (Australia) – 563
6. Courtney Walsh (West Indies) – 519
7. Kapil Dev (India) – 434
T8. Rangana Herath (Sri Lanka) – 433
T8. Stuart Broad (England) – 433
10. Sir Richard Hadlee (New Zealand) – 431
T11. Shaun Pollock (South Africa) – 421
T11. Dale Steyn (South Africa) – 421
Stress in the evening may take more of a toll on your body than stress at other times of day, a new study suggests.
The reason? Later in the day, the human body releases lower levels of the hormone that helps ease stress, according to researchers from Japan.
Acute stress response
“Our study suggests a possible vulnerability to stress in the evening,” said study leader Yujiro Yamanaka, a medical physiologist at Hokkaido University in Sapporo.
“However, it is important to take into account each individual’s unique biological clock and the time of day when assessing the response to stressors and preventing them,” Yamanaka said in a university news release.
The researchers measured levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the saliva of 27 young, healthy volunteers.
They also exposed them to a stressful situation to see if the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responds differently to acute stress at different times of day.
The HPA axis connects the body’s central nervous and endocrine systems. When a stressful event activates the axis, the body releases cortisol.
Cortisol levels are also controlled by the circadian clock in the brain.
Saliva samples
The volunteers were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to a stress test in the morning, two hours after waking up. The other group was exposed to a stress test in the evening, after being awake for 10 hours.
The 15-minute test involved preparing and giving a presentation to three interviewers and a camera. Participants also had to do mental arithmetic.
The researchers took saliva samples half an hour before the test, immediately after, and at 10-minute intervals for another half hour.
Cortisol levels increased significantly in the morning, but not in the evening, the results showed. However, participants’ heart rates – an indicator of the sympathetic nervous system’s response to stress – did not differ.
“The body can respond to the morning stress event by activating the HPA axis and sympathetic nervous system, but it needs to respond to evening stress event by activating the sympathetic nervous system only,” Yamanaka said.
The report was published recently in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology Reports.
