Cardiff – Manchester United captain Ashley Young admitted the mood around Old Trafford has been instantly lifted by caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s smile, but denied there were any celebrations in the dressing room at news of Jose Mourinho’s sacking.
Solskjaer was put in charge until the end of the season after Mourinho was dismissed on Tuesday with United 19 points off the top of the table.
That change paid instant dividends as United scored five goals in a Premier League match for the first time since Alex Ferguson’s last game in charge back in May 2013, thrashing Cardiff 5-1 on Saturday.
“I don’t think he (Solskjaer) has stopped smiling,” Young said after victory in the Welsh capital.
“He was like that as a player. He always has a smile on his face and I think that can reflect down on to the team, which is a good thing.
“Ole has come in and we were preparing in the right way for a game, even though it’s been a crazy week.”
Mourinho clashed with a number of senior figures in the United dressing room over his two-and-a-half seasons in charge.
Paul Pogba quickly deleted a controversial social media post of him smiling with the message “caption this” in the hours after Mourinho’s departure.
Restored to the starting line-up for the first time in four league games, Pogba was instrumental in setting up four of United’s five goals on Saturday.
“No celebration at all. Absolute lies,” Young said at the suggestion players were delighted to see the back of Mourinho.
“Obviously it was disappointing for the manager to get sacked.
“In his two-and-a-half years he won trophies. We have to take some responsibility for that as we are on the pitch.
“But we have to move on from that. As professional players we have to get on with the job in hand, and that is what we did here.”
And while most South Africans were relaxing or putting the final preparations on their Christmas celebrations, the former ANC chief was recording a two-part video on Sunday.
In the recordings, posted to Twitter on Sunday afternoon, Zuma announces that he has instructed his lawyers to appeal a recent high court ruling that he would have to personally foot the bill for his defence in all criminal cases instituted against him.
In the first video, Zuma says all South Africans “must respect the judgments by courts, at whatever level, because these judgments are judgments we should believe are taken by people who have taken thorough thought, listened to evidence [and] balanced the facts”.
In a second tweet, Zuma goes on to address why the state in democratic South Africa paid the legal costs of “many of the leaders of [the] apartheid system, some of whom killed my comrades”.
Zuma questioned why he, someone who had fought for democracy, had to pay for himself, while “apartheid killers” were “defended by the state”.
He appealed for consistency in the application of the law.
In 2006, then president Thabo Mbeki agreed for the state to cover Zuma’s legal costs in his fraud and corruption case related to the controversial arms deal.
The Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters approached the high court this year, in a bid to have the agreement declared null and void.
The EFF argued that over R25 million of state funds were paid out to cover Zuma’s legal fees.
Zuma has stirred up a conversation on Twitter, since joining the platform in mid December.
Writing an e-mail. Sending a text message. Surfing the internet.
These are activities taken for granted by most, but denied to paralysed people who’ve lost the use of their arms and hands.
Using only their minds
Now, thanks to a brain implant, a small group of paralysed patients can directly operate an off-the-shelf tablet device just by thinking about it.
The implant reads their brain waves, allowing the participants to move a cursor on their tablet and perform mouse clicks, said lead researcher Dr Paul Nuyujukian, an assistant professor of bioengineering and neurosurgery at Stanford University in California.
With their minds alone, the participants navigated commonly used tablet programmes, messaged family and friends, looked up websites, checked the weather and shopped online.
One participant, a musician, even played a bit of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” on a digital piano interface.
“The tablet became second nature to me, very intuitive,” one of the participants said in the study. “It felt more natural than the times I remember using a mouse.”
Implant monitors brain patterns
Three paralysed subjects had a 100-electrode implant placed into the motor regions of the brain, with a thin bundle of wires leading to a plug fixed to the skull, Nuyujukian said. The implant is about the size of a large pea, or a baby aspirin.
Two of the participants in this latest study had weakness or loss of movement of their arms and legs due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), a progressive disease affecting the nerves in the brain and spine that control movement. The third participant was paralysed due to a spinal cord injury.
The implant monitors brain patterns and feeds them into a computer algorithm, which decodes the thoughts and translates them into wireless signals, researchers said. Those signals are sent to the tablet, allowing subjects to control the device.
“If you think back to the old one-button computer mouse of yesteryear, that’s the signal we are able to extract from the brain,” Nuyujukian said. “It’s the equivalent of a cursor velocity and a one-button click.”
It usually takes about five to 10 minutes to calibrate the system to accurately translate a person’s brain waves into cursor movements, Nuyujukian said.
Workable from day one
“The participant is instructed to imagine moving the cursor to the right or the left or up or down while the cursor is actually making that movement automatically,” he said. “It turns out that simply imagining making that movement is very similar to the patterns of neural activity that occur when one actually makes this movement.”
Subjects are able to make up to 22 point-and-click selections per minute while using a variety of apps, and type up to 30 characters per minute using standard e-mail and text apps.
“Participants can control these on day one. That is possible, and we have shown that,” Nuyujukian said. “That’s not to say there is no benefit to practice. Our participants definitely feel more comfortable and capable with these systems after a week or two of actually practising it.”
The project is a collaboration that included researchers from Brown University, Massachusetts General Hospital and Stanford. The findings were published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Last year, this same research group published a paper in which they were assessing the same patients’ ability to type words using their thoughts, said Dr Thomas Oxley, a clinical instructor and director of innovation strategy at Mount Sinai Hospital Health System’s department of neurosurgery in New York City.
“They’ve now gone beyond that to demonstrate that this system can e-mail, text message and surf the internet, amongst other things,” said Oxley, who wasn’t involved with the study. “Those seem to be the three most-used applications in this group.”
‘Locked-in syndrome’
The researchers have further honed their system by integrating other useful “smart” computer technologies, Oxley said.
For example, the paralysed people’s typing speed underwent a “big jump primarily because they utilized predictive text, and it made a big difference in the patient’s capacity to usefully utilize the system and interact with their social network,” Oxley said.
This latest advance is the culmination of 15 years of research into brain patterns of movement, built on top of decades of previous neuroscience, Nuyujukian said.
The system could transform the lives of people with “locked-in syndrome”, whose paralysis has robbed them of the ability to speak, Oxley said.
“That’s so exciting for patients who’ve lost the capacity to speak, to be able to communicate with their loved ones again,” Oxley said.
However, it will be years before the technology reaches the point where it becomes widely available, Nuyujukian said.
“The final device needs to be something that’s fully implantable, that needs to be miniaturized. It cannot be a giant stack of computers and a giant cart. That’s not a clinical device,” Nuyujukian said. “It needs to be something that is just as accessible and easy to use as many of the other implantable technologies that we have for interacting with the brain, like deep brain stimulators or cochlear implants.
“This isn’t something that will be clinically available, say, next year,” Nuyujukian noted.

The new year is the perfect time to finally set up that home gym you've been wanting—and when it comes to at-home workouts, a good treadmill is pretty much essential. Rain or shine, a treadmill will make it easy to get your steps in (no excuses!). Whether you're after the latest high-tech features or would be content with a more basic, budget-friendly model, these are the best treadmills in every price range for 2019.
Treadmills under $3,500
• 3G Cardio Elite Runner Treadmill ($3,399; amazon.com). Pricey? Yes. But serious runners will love this treadmill, which is truly gym-quality. Features like an Ortho Flex Shock suspension system, 4.0 HP motor, large 22"x62" running platform, and amazing 10-year warranty make it one of the best out there. Plus, you can get free assembly when you purchase on Amazon right now.
Treadmills under $2,000
• Nautilus T618 Treadmill($1,229, marked down from $2,199; amazon.com). As far as treadmill discounts go, this is a big one. Not only is the Nautilus T618 40% off on Amazon right now, but you can also get free expert assembly (an $83 value). This model has tons of bells and whistles, including 15% motorized incline, dual backlit LCD display, 20"x60" belt, and Bluetooth connectivity with the Nautilus Trainer 2 app. If you're the competitive type, you can even sync your workout to the RunSocial App to "run" different routes with other users in real time.
• ProForm Pro 2000 Treadmill($1,219; walmart.com). The ProForm Pro 2000 has a seriously impressive console system. Think: 32 workout settings, 7" backlit display with all your stats, iFit technology, and a built-in EKG heart rate monitor. More than 200 five-star reviews don't hurt either.
Treadmills under $1,000
• Gold's Gym Trainer 720 Treadmill with Power Incline($599; walmart.com). A Walmart exclusive, this Gold's Gym treadmill offers impressive functionality for the price. There are 18 different one-button workout apps, LED display, a sound system for your music, and a roomy 20"x55" tread belt. Also good? AirStride Cushioning (your joints will thank you), a built-in fan, and incline up to 10%.
• NordicTrack T 6.5 S Treadmill($599; amazon.com). NordicTrack treadmills are incredibly popular for good reason: They're a trusted brand and a great value. This model is no exception. It's chock-full of features to let you customize your workout experience, including 20 built-in workouts, a console sound system, and access to iFit (plus you'll get a free one-month trial membership). And like the Gold's Gym treadmill, it has a 20"x55" tread belt, which is pretty spacious for the price.
Treadmills under $500
• Confidence Power Trac Pro 735W ($230; amazon.com). It's hard to beat a treadmill under $300, and this affordable model still makes it easy to fit in a serious cardio session. There are 12 built-in workout modes, quick-select speeds, an LED display with your stats, and three manually adjustable incline levels. It can also fold into itself for storage.
• Weslo Crosswalk 5.2t Folding Total Body Workout Treadmill ($269, marked down from $399; walmart.com). If you're after basic treadmill functionality and easy storage, this is the model for you. Reviewers rave about the bonus CrossWalk arms, which let you strengthen your upper body with every step. There are four built-in workout modes, two manual incline positions (1.5% and 6%), and a heart rate monitor. And although the tread belt isn't as big as others on this list, its smaller size means it can be folded vertically so you can store it when it's not in use.
