Have you ever wondered why hair grows on some parts of your body, but not others?
New research offers a possible explanation. Scientists found that hairless skin secretes a protein that blocks a signalling pathway (WNT) that controls hair growth.
Called Dickkopf 2 (DKK2), the protein is found in specific embryonic and adult tissues and has a variety of functions, the University of Pennsylvania researchers explained.
They found that plantar skin from mice – similar to the underside of the human wrist – had high levels of DKK2. When they genetically removed DKK2 from the mice, hair began to grow in this normally hairless skin region.
Hair formation
“This is significant because it tells us WNT is still present in hairless regions, it’s just being blocked,” said study co-senior author Sarah Millar, director of the Penn Skin Biology and Diseases Resource-Based Center.
“We know that WNT signalling is critical for the development of hair follicles; blocking it causes hairless skin, and switching it on causes formation of more hair,” Millar said in a Penn news release.
“In this study, we’ve shown the skin in hairless regions naturally produces an inhibitor that stops WNT from doing its job,” she added.
Hair follicles develop before birth. This means that hair follicles don’t regrow after severe burns or deep wounds. The researchers are currently investigating whether secreted WNT inhibitors suppress hair follicle development in such cases.
More than 80 million people in the United States have male- or female-pattern baldness, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Previous research suggests that DKK2 may be associated with this condition, meaning it could be a potential target for treatment.
“We hope that these lines of investigation will reveal new ways to improve wound healing and hair growth, and we plan to continue to pursue these goals moving forward,” Millar said.
The study was published in the journal Cell Reports.

A South African teenager who was detained in China says she’ll never leave the country to work overseas again after her month-long detention.
Tristan-Lee Niemand, 19, spoke to News24 about her ordeal shortly after landing at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday.
She opened up about how she found herself detained after working as a teacher in Nanjing, China, for three weeks.
Niemand and six other South Africans working as teachers in Nanjing were detained after it emerged that they didn’t have the proper work permits to teach in the country. They only had student visas and they were promised to be provided with work permits by the school that employed them.

On Tuesday, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed that Niemand and her group in Nanjing would be deported to South Africa on Friday. It also announced that eight South Africans being held in Zhejiang province would be sent home on Sunday.
Niemand vowed to never leave South Africa to work in another country.
“I arrived in China on October 10 and started my teaching job seven days later. Three weeks on the job in China, while we were in the house we were sharing, Chinese police [arrived] knocking on the door.
“They ordered us to hand over our passports and phones. We were then taken to a police station and questioned for five hours before we were released,” she said.
The following day, police arrived again and told them to go with them to file some papers.
On November 16, they were then taken to a hospital for check-ups and later taken to a detention house where they were detained.
“At that detention house, we were treated like prisoners. They didn’t care about us.”
She said there were five South African nationals, four Thailand citizens, three Russians and one person from an African country in that detention house, which Niemand could not remember.

“Things were different in China. However, I have learned a lot of things in that country although we were not allowed to speak to our parents. We were told to so things we didn’t understand,” she said.
The East London teenager, who was ecstatic about her return back to her native land, was emotional and could not explain her joy when her plane touched down at 07.30 at OR Tambo International Airport.
“The first thing that I am going to do when I arrive home is to have a braai. I missed South African meat and I am going to have lots and lots of it at home,” she said.
“I don’t know how to explain how I feel right now. It was very emotional when I first laid my eyes on my daughter at the airport. It felt like the first day when I saw her face.
“It has been emotional for me when I heard about her detention. I have been waiting for her since 06:00. We are now waiting for our next flight to East London where we are going to celebrate her arrival,” said Bridger.
“My daughter will never go and work in another country again,” he said.
Police in Humansdorp and surrounding areas have launched searches for at least two groups of house robbers after separate attacks, one of which resulted in one person dying.
Officials have appealed for information regarding the suspects’ whereabouts.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said that on Friday night at about 22:50, two men armed with firearms knocked at the door of a house in Vergenoeg, Humansdorp, and confronted the occupants who were sitting in the lounge.
“Upon opening the door, two armed males entered the house and threatened the occupants. The suspects demanded cash and about R200 was handed over to the suspects. The robbers then went into the bedroom and fired several shots at a person who was sleeping, killing a 36-year-old woman and [fleeing] the scene,” said Swart.
The name of the victim will be released after her next-of-kin has been notified.
Another robbery
In separate incident at about 20:00 on Friday night, four armed men entered a house through an open door in Weaverway, Thornhill.

“They threatened the couple with firearms and knives. The suspects tied the couple up and demanded cash. The complainant tried to overpower one of the suspects and he was stabbed multiple times with a screwdriver,” said Swart.
The robbers also assaulted him in the process. They then took cellphones, tablets, laptops, jewellery and cash before fleeing the scene.
One of the victims managed to alert their security company and the police. The couple was taken for medical treatment.
Swart urged homeowners to be vigilant at all times and ensure that they utilise security measures that are in place at their homes or to improve on it.

Cape Town – Proteas captain Faf du Plessis is as excited as anyone to see Dale Steyn operating during the Pakistan Test series.
The 35-year-old needs just one more wicket to break Shaun Pollock’s record as the leading wicket-taker in South African Test history, and that milestone will certainly come this summer.
Steyn is expected to spearhead the Proteas bowling attack alongside Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier at Centurion on Boxing Day, and Du Plessis told Netwerk24 that the ‘Phalaborwa Express’ was back to his best.
“I think he is South Africa’s best ever bowler,” said Du Plessis.
Steyn took just two wickets in as many Test matches on the recent Proteas tour to Sri Lanka, but it sets him up nicely to break the record in front of his home crowd.
“If he broke the record in Sri Lanka there would have been nobody to celebrate with him,” Du Plessis said.
“This way, in South Africa, he will be in front of all of his family and friends.”
Du Plessis added that Steyn was unlikely to keep playing white ball cricket after the 2019 World Cup, but that he still had a lot to offer on the Test stage.
