News24.com | Sun City open for business after devastating storm
The Sun City Resort is open for business after a devastating storm wreaked havoc, causing flooding and damage to the popular holiday destination over the weekend.
A hail storm, which also lead to subsequent flash floods, hit the North West region of the Pilanesberg and surrounding areas around 16:30 on Saturday. It resulted in substantial damages to hotel rooms, vehicles and other buildings at Sun City.
News24 previously reported that day visitors were immediately evacuated and bused away from badly affected areas.
On Monday, Raul de Lima, group executive for Sun City, said the resort was reopened following mop-up operations.

“Over the last 48 hours we’ve managed to deal with the mop-up operation to get the resort back into a decent shape for visitation by both hotel guests and day visitors,” said de Lima.
“The Valley of the Waves and Sun Central restaurants, including the retail mode, is open for business and most of the facilities are up and running again.”
De Lima added that there are still some challenges that the resort faces following the storm, such as a shortage of hotel room inventory, particularly at the Soho Hotel at the casino where 100 rooms are out of commission.
A further 40 rooms are out of commission at The Cascades and ten at The Palace, De Lima said.

“For the Vacation Club and The Cabanas we’ve managed to put rooms back into inventory and will be able to accommodate guests who have bookings, and who are arriving from today.”
“For the rest, the resort is back in fairly good shape.”
De Lima also commended the Sun City staff, service providers and some of their contractors for the effort that went into putting the resort back into a condition which is acceptable to visitors.
“For that we are very thankful. We would also like to thank all our guests and customers who have been understanding and sympathetic to what took place, given that it was a freak storm. For their indulgence and certainly their patience, we are very grateful and would like to thank them very much.”
De Lima said that while all systems are a go and that day visitors are encouraged to come to the resort, from a hotel perspective, all guests should still phone the resort to confirm that their booking is intact.
Health24.com | I was raped by a relative and forced into silence says HIV positive youth
Raped at the age of 23 by her uncle in 2015, partially-sighted Tebogo Nkwana (26) was told to keep quiet about the ordeal to protect the family.
Nkwana, who lives in Burgersfort, said she attempted suicide several times as just thinking about the whole experience made her angry about life.
Accepting the situation
Now a third year Media Studies student at the University of Limpopo, Nkwana only received counselling last year when she tested HIV positive. She believes she contracted the virus when she was raped.
Nkwana has now dedicated her time to helping other young women who might be going through similar experiences. She wants to help them to speak out and seek help before they end up killing themselves.
“When I found out that I was also HIV positive I then joined a support group for people living with HIV which I believe helped me to accept the situation. That was the only time I received counselling, because when the abuse happened I was told to keep quiet and nothing was done. I received counselling after almost two years of suffering in silence. Before the counselling I was always angry, and it also affected me academically,” said Nkwana.
Nkwana has found the courage to talk about her ordeal and be open about her HIV status as she believes that many other women go through the same experience daily – but they too are stopped from talking.
Motivational talks
“When I was raped I did not know what to do, and it affected me emotionally and academically. I had to repeat several modules as I couldn’t cope at all and I was confused. I tried several times to commit suicide, but I was not successful,” she said.
Many people in rural villages still protect family members who commit sexual assaults in fear of separating families. The victims are left to suffer in silence.
“Around the campus since, I became open about my status many other students have been encouraged to go for an HIV test. They are now free to talk about HIV related issues and their statuses. I believe it’s better for one to know their status by going for regular tests. The important thing is living, and we should accept any situation and seek help before it’s too late,” she said.
Nkwana said she will continue doing motivational talks throughout the province to encourage people to speak out against abuse and go for regular HIV tests. – Health-e News.

Health24.com | ‘Adaptive surfing is the best thing that’s ever happened to me’
Sometimes you catch the good waves in life. Other times you get caught in the whitewash of endlessly tumbling with no sense of direction, all the time wondering what you did to deserve this bulls**t. But the true hero goes back for another wave…
Adaptive surfing
A few weekends ago, I had the great privilege of attending an adaptive surfing clinic, hosted by Surf Emporium. Adaptive surfing is a version of surfing that allows those with disabilities – anything from paralysis to blindness and cerebral palsy – to enjoy the sport. The aim is to show people living with disabilities that they can continue to follow their dreams.

One of these amazing surfers is wheelchair-bound Elsje Neethling – although “bound” is the wrong word to describe this inspirational woman. Elsje hasn’t let her disabilities hold her back in the slightest, but has simply adapted her way of living life to the fullest…
Elsje Neethling
Elsje comes from a family of swimmers, her brother being the Olympic swimmer, Ryk Neethling. “As kids, my brother and I used to spend hours in the sea. We’ve always loved the ocean.” But it was also in her childhood that Elsje was given some life-changing news…
Elsje was only 12 years old when she was told she had a brain tumour. “I always had headaches as a kid, so my parents took me to many specialist doctors to find out what was going on, but they kept misdiagnosing me,” she begins.
“In February 1994, I woke up one morning completely paralysed. My folks rushed me to hospital and after numerous tests and scans, they told my parents I’ve got two months left to live.”

“I had a choroid plexus carcinoma, an aggressive brain cancer that was inoperable,” Elsje explains. “I just remember everyone crying and coming to our house to say goodbye to me. I didn’t realise the extent of the diagnosis and I just went through the motions.” But then a hint of hope – a neurosurgeon in Johannesburg was willing to operate. The family was there in a flash.
And so began the battle against cancer: Surgery upon surgery, plus countless treatments and radiation. An unfortunate side-effect: The loss of her legs.
“After my last big operation in 2010, my body basically couldn’t cope with all the trauma inflicted on my spine,” Elsje remembers. “My choroid plexus carcinoma cancer is terminal. Cancer never really ‘leaves’ you. You always worry about any aches, but fear will mess you up. I choose life and to live fully – no fear.”
Here’s to living…
“I reckon brain cancer has made me so brave for life’s challenges,” Elsje says. “I get pretty bad shock pains in my left weaker leg at night, but I choose to look past it and focus on the nice things [in life] instead. I’m just happy to be alive – I’ve honed the skill of being relentlessly positive no matter what life throws my way. I’ve learnt that you can’t control life – stuff happens.”

But how you handle the whitewash, that’s what matters. “I just go with the flow,” Elsje adds. “Once you learn to do this, you free yourself from stress. Just live! Don’t try to control it, live it. We are here for a good time, not a long time – so be happy.”
Finding freedom riding the waves
“Last year I met a crowd from Surfer’s Corner in Muizenberg. They showed me [adaptive surfing],” Elsje explains. “I immediately fell in love with the experience.” She’s been practicing ever since with the help of her surf coach, Albert Millard. “He picks me up after work and we practice surfing for hours. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
And the learning never ends. Every time Elsje and Albert head in, the ocean has a few new lessons planned. “I just need someone to carry the board into the shallows for me,” Elsje explains. “Then I just let the stream pull me in. And then I paddle for my life! My arms are strong so it helps.” She can basically go out unassisted these days – what an absolute inspiration.

“Surfing invigorates my soul,” Elsje says. “When I touch the water, I don’t feel the cold or think of the dangers out there. The adrenaline beats any imposing threat. It’s the best medicine for any ailment.”
And the water doesn’t distinguish between able bodies and disabilities. “Throughout my life I’ve been given limits by doctors regarding my health,” she continues. “Now, the waves have become my world where there are no limits. I’m getting stronger because of it. It just proves that life doesn’t have to stop just because you aren’t the same as everyone else… The water doesn’t judge, it treats us all the same. People should be more like that.”

“Sun City can confirm that Sun Central and the Valley of the Waves will be open today for day visitors and hotel guests,” spokesperson Enid Vickers said on Sunday morning.

“Two people sustained injuries from slipping on wet floors. They were treated at the onsite clinic before being transferred to nearby hospitals,” CEO Thabo Mosololi said in a statement.
Furthermore, “by midnight last night, the estimated number of rooms affected include 80 rooms at the Soho Hotel, 40 rooms at the Cabanas, 30 at the Cascades Hotel, 26 at the Vacation Club and 20 at The Palace”.
Mosololi said that the situation on Sunday morning was “serious but under control”.
“Most of the damage was caused by flash flooding at the Sun Central family and entertainment precinct, and in ground floor hotel rooms.”
‘Go home’
Earlier, he said that new visitors arriving at the resort were being advised to return home.
The hailstorm hit the North West region of the Pilanesberg and surrounding areas at around 16:30 on Saturday. Day visitors were subsequently evacuated from the Sun Central and Sun Welcome Centres, which had sustained the worst damage.

“Guests whose accommodation was affected were being provided with alternative options. Some guests opted to leave the resort to return home.”

“Contingency plans are in place, and mop-up operations are under way in damaged hotel rooms and public areas to ensure that normal operations resume as soon as possible.”
