7 Drinks You Can Enjoy on the Keto Diet
The ketogenic diet is all about achieving ketosis, a metabolic state that burns fat for fuel, instead of carbohydrates or protein. To remain in that heightened fat-torching state, you need to limit your carb intake to 5-10% of your total calories. For most women, that translates to about 25-40 grams of carbs per day (about the amount in a single English muffin, or one glass of fruit juice)—which is why followers of the diet need to be so careful not only about what they eat, but what they drink too. To help you choose your sips wisely, here’s a list of seven keto-friendly drinks that’ll make it a little easier to meet your carb cap.
Water with lemon or lime
Still or sparking zero-calorie, zero-carb water is always going to be a dieter’s best choice. But go ahead and add a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime to your glass. The sour juices have a negligible amounts of carbs. What’s more, drinking water before meals has been shown to be an effective way to help curb appetite.
Diet soda and other diet beverages
Most diet sodas and beverages sweetened with sugar substitutes have zero grams of carbs. Some keto purists may claim sugar subs are not actually keto-friendly, because they believe the sweet stuff increases cravings for carbs. But there is no evidence to suggest using carb-free sugar substitutes will interfere with your weight-loss efforts. (What’s more, many packaged keto snacks and foods made with carb-free sweeteners actually make it easier to stick to a keto lifestyle longer, so you can lose weight and keep it off.)
When selecting a diet drink, check the Nutrition Facts panel to make sure it contains less than 5 grams total sugars or 20 calories from carbs. Of course, you’ll need to count any carbohydrates in these beverages against your allotted daily carb budget.
Keep in mind that as a general rule, diet beverages that are clear have fewer questionable ingredients. There are also diet beverages, like Zevia, that are sweetened with all-natural stevia.

Coffee and tea (with cream, coconut oil, or butter)
If you like a dollop of butter whipped into your morning cup of Joe, you’ll be happy to learn that bulletproof coffee is indeed keto-friendly. When you blend fat like butter or coconut oil or heavy cream into your coffee or tea, you’re not adding carbs.
If you prefer a more traditional cup of coffee or tea, you’ll need to drink it either plain (or with sugar substitutes) and with very little milk since milk contributes some carbs.
Cow’s milk
On the keto diet you can drink some milk without disrupting ketosis. A ½ cup of milk has 6 grams of carbs (24 calories) while providing plenty of protein (4 grams), and much-needed nutrients like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin D.

Almond milk
Unsweetened almond milk has around 30 calories per 8-ounce serving and no sugar, making it a great option for those following a keto lifestyle. Look for brands that are fortified with calcium and vitamins A and D.
Keto smoothies
While many smoothies are super sugary thanks to the fruit and milk base, a quick Google search of “keto smoothie” or “low-carb smoothie” will return millions of recipes. The best way to keep carbs low and taste and satisfaction high is to make your smoothie base with fats like nut butters, avocado, or coconut oil. Then add in some low-carb veggies like leafy greens, cucumbers, celery or beets, and smaller amounts of fruits like berries, apples or pears. If you need liquid, use ice, water or unsweetened almond milk.

Sport24.co.za | Mitchell still dealing with after-effects of Joburg break-in
Cape Town – England defence coach John Mitchell says a traumatic episode in South Africa in 2010 has helped shape him into the person he is today.
Mitchell spoke to England Rugby’s official website ahead of Saturday’s Test between England and South Africa at Twickenham when he recalled the horrific incident while he was coaching the Lions.
A break-in at his home in Johannesburg resulted in him being stabbed twice and tied up.
“It was a hell of a shock to the system,” says Mitchell, who was woken by two intruders. “It was basically fight or flight. I was like ’man, I’m in trouble here. I could possibly lose my life’.
“Out of that came a fighting attitude. I thought, ’I’m not ready to give in yet’, though nor was I equipped with the tools to deal with the situation. I was very, very lucky.”
Mitchell is still dealing with the after-effects.
“I wouldn’t say I’ve entirely got my deep sleep back. I’m always aware of noises. Believe me, it put life into perspective very quickly.”
The former All Blacks coach added that the incident was en eye-opener.
“You know how life works… There’s maybe one or two things you’re not too happy with. Then you go through something like that.
“It sharpened me up big time and allowed me to make some critical decisions in my life on what I wanted to achieve and how I wanted to go about it.
“I’d fallen into the outcome bubble. After New Zealand’s exit from the 2003 World Cup I was very hard on myself. I’d lost perspective because I was wanting to prove a point.”
After leaving the Lions in 2012, Mitchell spent time as English club Sale Sharks’ director of rugby, before returning to South Africa to coach the University of KwaZulu-Natal for two seasons (2013-2014).
Mitchell became United States head coach in 2017, before joining the Bulls last year as their executive of rugby.
His tenure at the Bulls ended premature when England came calling.
“I said I was never again going to allow winning, losing or drawing to determine who I am. I like to think I’ve stayed true to that.”

News24.com | West Rand District Municipality workers go home to wait for salaries
The sit-in over unpaid salaries at the West Rand District Municipality has ended, chief of staff Tshepo Mathodlana confirmed on Thursday.
“It ended at midnight,” said Mathodlana, who has also not been paid his salary yet.
He said more news on the situation was expected later on Thursday, and the details will be released as they become available.
On Wednesday, chanting workers stormed into a council sitting at about 14:00 and chained the doors leading into the chambers in Randfontein, preventing politicians and executive officials from exiting the building.

They said they would not leave the chambers until they got salary notifications on their cellphones, but eventually agreed to leave and wait for further news.
News24 reported that the municipality invested R77m with the controversial VBS Mutual Bank, despite financial constraints.
The municipality covers a vast area to the far west of Johannesburg and borders North West.
It cites as tourist attractions the world-famous Cradle of Mankind and its main industries are mining, manufacturing and construction.
Some employees said they were last paid in August, and West Rand secretary of the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers’ Union Pitso Mogole said employees risked defaulting on financial obligations and having houses repossessed.
“We have been told that there are no funds to cater for our salaries. They think they are clever, they only paid salaries to lower levels,” he said.
ANC speaker in the municipality Nonkoliso Tundzi said the workers had permission to stage the sit-in.
She denied that the municipality was broke, despite its failure to pay salaries and service providers.
“This matter has been on the table for a while. We have been struggling with paying salaries, including ours too,” she said.
Tundzi said the municipality was not generating any income and relied on grants to survive. The municipality’s budget is burdened by unfunded mandates, she said.
