Woman Who Lost 350 Lbs. Body Shamed on the Beach Again—Even After Skin Removal Surgery
“I was walking on the beach and again I was pointed at and laughed and made fun of.”
The body shamers don’t seem to change — but Jacqueline Adan gets stronger.
After losing 350 lbs. in three years, Adan was body shamed during a 2017 vacation for the loose skin on her body. The incident went viral, and became an empowering moment for the Montessori preschool teacher.
Now a year later — and after difficult skin removal surgeries — Adan was body shamed yet again during a beach vacation. The difference was, though, that she didn’t care.
“It happened this year while I was on vacation again,” she wrote on Instagram. “Yes, I was walking on the beach and again I was pointed at and laughed and made fun of. As I was getting laughed at and pointed at something came over me. I was not embarrassed, I did not feel like I had to justify myself and I did not freeze or want to cry. I actually felt free! This time…I just did not care!”
Adan said that she realized their opinions don’t matter to her anymore.
“I tried to go over every change inside my head as to why this year I just did not care. Then it finally hit me. I do not depend on the approval of others, and I do not care what others may or may not think about my body,” she said.
This time around, Adan is only concerned about how she feels about herself.
“I am so focused on living my best life, and I have been working so hard on loving me exactly how I am — loose skin and all — that I do not have time to worry about what others may think or say,” she said. “I can finally say that I am at a place where I still have insecurities and a lot of loose skin, and yes mentally I still struggle at times, but I can finally say that … [I] genuinely feel confident, happy and [do] not care what others may think or say.”
“This is me. Right now. This is my body,” she continued. “This is what hard work, sweat, blood, tears, smiles, happiness, pain, love, and hard work look like. This is what it looks like to finally accept my body for what it is … Loose skin, cellulite, stretch marks and all.”
Adan previously told PEOPLE that her lengthy skin removal process was extremely painful, physically and mentally. After five surgeries, the most recent one being on her legs in January, she learned that it’s not an instant fix.
“I think because I had so much weight taken off my legs during the surgery, and because I had back to back surgeries, my body didn’t react well this time,” she said. “I dealt with a lot of swelling, and my body is hanging on to a lot of fluid.”
Adan dealt with body dysmorphia after the surgeries, and felt like she was back where she had started, 350 lbs. ago.
“I’m seeing myself in the mirror and I’m seeing myself a lot bigger than I have, and it’s hard to make that distinction that it’s not weight gain, it’s just fluid,” she adds. “Now that I’m swollen, I feel like everyone’s noticing.”
Still, Adan, who expects to undergo another three surgeries, said that she would do it again every time.
“I’m so glad that I did it, not just for my physical health but for my mental health and wellbeing. But they are very difficult procedures,” she said. “You have to dig down deep and find that strength to recognize that this isn’t going to last forever and it’s going to get better and better.”
Mini Coconut-Chai Cheesecakes
Whether it’s your classic New York style, key-lime flavored, or chocolate marbled, I’ll gladly eat an entire wheel of cheesecake. Don’t put it past me. But, as we know, this famously rich dessert is heavy on the fat and calories, so it’s not wise for our health to overdo it (*sigh*). That’s why these miniature treats are perfect when you want to indulge, given that they’re muffin-sized.
What’s even better is that this cheesecake recipe is infused with an unexpected flavor: chai. Besides coffee (duh!), chai is another favorite year round bevvy, as we enjoy an iced chai latte in summertime or a piping hot chai tea in the colder months. Ground ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg are beaten into the mixture and help to give it that comforting taste, which balances sweeter ingredients like the Neufchatel cheese and vanilla.
A single slice of The Cheesecake Factory’s Original Cheesecake contains 707 calories (yikes!), 29 grams of saturated fat, and 62 grams of carbohydrates, but these bite-size cheesecakes only contain 182 calories per serving, 5 grams of saturated fat, and 17 grams of carbohydrates. Perfect as a light finish to any dinner party or when you’re just craving something sweet, these mini coconut chai cheesecakes are the dessert you need in your life.
Recipe Is:
How to Make It
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a standard muffin tin with 12 paper muffin liners.
Step 2
Place almonds in a food processor; pulse until coarsely ground, about 10 times. Add flaked coconut; pulse until finely ground but still chunky, about 5 times. Transfer to a bowl; stir in oil, salt, and 2 tablespoons of the coconut sugar. Spoon 1 tablespoon mixture into each muffin liner, pressing with fingers to flatten. Bake until lightly browned and set, about 10 minutes. Remove from oven; cool 15 minutes.
Step 3
Beat Neufchâtel cheese with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth, about 30 seconds. Add egg, yogurt, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and remaining 4 tablespoons coconut sugar; beat until smooth, about 30 seconds. Pour batter evenly over cooled mixture in muffin liners (about 3 tablespoons batter each). Bake at 350°F until centers are set but still have a slight jiggle, 12 to 13 minutes. Remove from oven; cool completely, about 30 minutes. Chill, covered, at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours.
Step 4
Stir together pomegranate juice and honey in a small saucepan; bring to a boil over medium-high. Cook, stirring occasionally, until reduced to 1/3 cup, 8 to 10 minutes. Cover and chill until ready to serve.
Step 5
To serve, remove chilled cheesecakes from muffin liners. Drizzle with chilled pomegranate syrup, and sprinkle with pomegranate seeds.

News24.com | Ex-SARS exec to ‘rogue unit’ journalist: ‘My life is destroyed’
A former South African Revenue Service (SARS) executive confronted journalist Stephan Hofstatter at the launch of his book, License to Loot, demanding an apology from him for his role in the so-called SARS “rogue unit” saga on Thursday.
Pete Richer, who resigned as group executive for strategic planning and risk in May 2015, angrily confronted Hofstatter at the event at Love Books in Melville, saying that Hofstatter and his colleagues at the Sunday Times caused enormous damage to people’s lives, careers and families.
Hofstatter was part of a team of journalists that published numerous stories about the existence of a “rogue unit” between October 2014 and October 2015.
The stories were later found to be baseless and the newspaper apologised for its reporting. The rogue unit narrative was used as the pretext for Tom Moyane, who was appointed SARS commissioner in September 2014, closing down the taxman’s specialist enforcement units.
It led to an exodus of expert and senior staff. Moyane is suspended and acting SARS commissioner Mark Kingon has said he is resurrecting the specialist units.
Richer told Hofstatter that his reputation as a risk specialist had been destroyed and that he was forced to leave SARS because of the Sunday Times’ reporting.
“Not only me, but good people like Ivan Pillay, Johann van Loggerenberg, Adrian Lackay…” Richer said the modus operandi when destroying an institution such as SARS was to disseminate false information that is then used to force an investigation and discredit individuals.
“It happened at SARS, at the Hawks, at IPID (Independent Police Investigative Directorate) and at the police,” he said and accused Hofstatter and his colleagues of playing into the hands of state capture.
He said no one at the Sunday Times had ever asked him for comment about the rogue unit stories and that journalists relied on information given to them by a smuggler of rhino horns.
“I lost my job at SARS. You set up scurrilous unethical journalists to set up a fiction to get rid of hard-working civic servants,” Richer told Hofstatter.
SARS investigative capabilities have been broken down. OECD rated SARS top in the world. Its decimated, along with Hawks, Ipid, police, through complicit unethical journalists, says ex-SARS exec Pete Richer. @TeamNews24 pic.twitter.com/MVdixrt3zr
— Pieter Du Toit (@PieterDuToit) September 20, 2018
“SARS’ investigative capabilities have been broken down. We were highly rated by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)…the British came to see how we do things…it’s now decimated.”
Hofstatter, who listened intently to Richer, apologised that Richer was never approached for comment.
“I apologise if anything I did hurt you personally. That was never my intention. I always tried to stand up for the downtrodden and expose corruption.”
“I never wanted to cause harm, do ill. Worked on SOEs since 2010, stand up for downtrodden. Made mistakes, apologised, serious errors. Stories were used to attack institutions. Never our intention. I’m very sorry, Peter,” says Hofstatter. @TeamNews24
— Pieter Du Toit (@PieterDuToit) September 20, 2018
He admitted that there were “gaps in my knowledge” and that, in hindsight, he should have stepped back to look at the story he and his colleagues were investigating.
“It was a chaotic, upside down time. We were under pressure for scoops. We should have stood back,” he said, but explained that as many as nine reporters and editors were involved in investigating the story.
“I cannot speak on behalf of the Sunday Times… we have apologised extensively and it is available for everyone to read.”
Hofstatter tells @ferialhaffajee reporting on SARS was chaotic, upside down, a difficult time. @TeamNews24 #SARS
— Pieter Du Toit (@PieterDuToit) September 20, 2018
In response to a question on whether he would be willing to testify in front of the Nugent commission of inquiry into tax administration, Hofstatter said he wanted to move on from the episode.
He did not address the SARS matter in his book, which is focused on Eskom, because “frankly, I’m not ready yet”, he said.
Richer said afterwards that if Hofstatter believed what he said during the event and if he was remorseful, he should make a submission to the Nugent commission.
“He should write about what happened with their reporting. They don’t understand what the impact of their stories were. We had to bail out our friends with mortgage payments because they lost their jobs, because of this.”
Also present at the launch were protesting members of a group called Johannesburg Against Injustice.
“We are here to protest against Stephan Hofstatter for his role in state capture, in particular what he wrote to undermine the SARS rogue unit, as it was called, general dishonesty and trash,” said the organisation’s David Lydall.
“As an active organisation we have been around for two years. We actively fought against state capture. We are part of Future South Africa and the Save South Africa coalition,” Lydall said.
“We are very much aware of this sort of thing. Obviously, we have read Jacques Pauw’s book, and Johann van Loggerenberg’s book which reference him (Hofstatter) directly and the sort of things he did. So when we heard that this was happening today we decided to make sure that the story is told,” he said.
News24.com | Businesswoman Wendy Luhabe faces backlash over apartheid tweet
South African entrepreneur Wendy Luhabe has been slammed on social media as the “black Helen Zille” for posting a tweet in which she says people who studied and worked during the apartheid regime have a better work ethic than the current generation.
In the tweet, posted on Wednesday, Luhabe says under apartheid “we had a much better work ethic, we were responsible for our lives understandably” and then adds that such attributes “have been replaced by a culture of entitlement and dependency” since South Africa became a democracy.
South Africans did not take kindly to this reflection and responded in their numbers to the businesswoman.
Many felt the tweet struck the same chord as Western Cape Premier Zille’s utterances about there being positive elements to colonialism.
“For me Wendy Luhabe’s tweet is no different from Helen Zille’s colonialism was better tweets,” Zingisa Mase responded.
Labelling citizens as “entitled” rubbed actress Nokuthula Ledwaba up the wrong way, prompting her to point out the system black people have to fight daily.
“That time we’re trying to work hard in a system that spits in our faces all the damn time. Still we get up and try. Before you label us, come to our side of town. Your tweet cut so deep. It’s cruel too,” Ledwaba responded.
Some commented on how connections, and not hard work, had led Luhabe to where she was today.
“I think the problem is the lie that their success was gained from hard work as an individual’s effort instead of contacts, community support, and loads of luck. Those investment deals Mam Wendy got are not as a result of hard work but her connections. I won’t go further…” Pinky Khoabane tweeted.
News24 reached out to Luhabe on Thursday but she declined to comment.
“I am not prepared to give reaction or comment on this,” Luhabe said.
Sport24.co.za | Willemse steps closer to Bok No 15 jersey
Cape Town – Damian Willemse will warm up for what looks like a probable first start in the Springbok No 15 jersey in next week’s Rugby Championship Test when Western Province host Griquas in a Currie Cup match at Newlands on Saturday.
With Willie le Roux returning to England to play for Wasps and thus unavailable for the clash with Australia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, Willemse has been tipped as the likely replacement.
Bok coach Rassie Erasmus has been grooming him for the role and his non-appearance in the match day squads in Australia and New Zealand – Cheslin Kolbe played off the bench instead – can be seen as an attempt by Erasmus to protect Willemse, who is only 20, from a potential confidence knock on foreign fields.
Willemse has played most of his rugby at the Stormers as a flyhalf but he is not new to playing fullback for WP coach John Dobson. He played fullback in last year’s Currie Cup final against the Sharks, with Robert du Preez starting that game as the preferred flyhalf.
But with Dillyn Leyds, who has been dropped to the bench for this game, in outstanding form at fullback, it is reasonable to speculate that Dobson would have opted for Willemse to play flyhalf were it not for a suggestion from the Bok management that he be tried in the last line of defence.
Western Province take on Griquas on Saturday at 19:30 while the Springboks face the Wallabies on September 29 at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium at 17:05.

Health24.com | How many kilojoules are actually in a potato, anyways?
What do the following delicious foods have in common:
French fries
Gnocchi
Latkes
Yup, that’s right – they’re all made out of potatoes, the world’s best food.
Sadly, potatoes don’t have the best reputation for being that healthy (thanks, low-carb diets!) – and with all the starch involved, you might wonder how many kilojoules are in a potato. Well, let me put your mind at ease: It’s not that bad.
A potato’s kilojoule count of course will depend slightly on the variety and size of your potato. A smaller medium red potato, for example, has 623kJ, according to the USDA, compared to the 702kJ in a medium russet potato.
Of course, nutrition isn’t just about kilojoules. For the curious, here’s what you’ll get in a whole, medium russet potato:
- Kilojoules: 702
- Fat: 0.2g (0g sat fat)
- Carbohydrates: 38g
- Sodium: 1mg
- Sugar: 1g
- Fibre: 3g
- Protein: 5g

Do potatoes deserve their bad rap?
The short version? No. “Potatoes are a rich source of several important micronutrients,” says Nora Minno, a Daily Burn coach and trainer. “One medium potato contains 70% of your daily recommended vitamin C, 30% of your daily recommended Vitamin B-6 and 25% of your daily recommended potassium.”
Also: “Potatoes are one of the most affordable vegetables,” says Torey Armul, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “One study found that potatoes offer more nutrients per penny than other vegetables.”
And yeah, they’re starchy and carby. But Minno says potatoes kind of got a raw deal in the whole low-carb craze.
“While they are considered a starchy vegetable, they also contain protein and fibre which can help slow down the release of glucose into the bloodstream and help avoid blood sugar spikes,” she says. The surprisingly high amount of protein in a potato (5g) makes it “great for those who are looking for plant-based sources of protein”.

So how can I make potatoes healthier?
Obviously, some of those potato-based foods I mentioned earlier are not the healthiest (and add on way more kilojoules than just the plain potato). Vandana R Sheth, a certified diabetes educator and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says she loves baked or oven-roasted “fries” as a way to enjoy the health benefits of potatoes “without a lot of added fat” or kilojoules. And Minno says she personally opts for potatoes instead of toast when looking for a healthier side at a breakfast restaurant.
