A KwaZulu-Natal woman accused of murdering her 7-year-old son is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Megan Prins, 34, was arrested after allegedly admitting to killing her son after booking into an Umhlanga guest house.
She allegedly smothered him to death after giving him medication meant for adults and then attempted suicide by slitting her wrists. Prins indicated through her lawyer that she intends to plead guilty.
At her last court appearance on July 13, the court decided that Prins would have to remain behind bars until a bed became available at public mental facility, Fort Napier.
The prosecutor had previously told the court that Prins had been examined by the district surgeon who recommended that she be assessed by medical professionals.
“Ideally, we would want this to happen as soon as possible but because of a long queue, you will have to wait for availability of a bed,” Magistrate Mahomed Motala said.
A healthy diet may reduce a woman’s risk of hearing loss, a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition finds.
“We observed that those following an overall healthy diet had a lower risk of moderate or worse hearing loss,” said study first author Dr Sharon Curhan, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
The researchers analysed data from nearly 71 000 women followed for 22 years in the Nurses’ Health Study II.
DASH and AMED diets
Those whose eating habits most closely resembled the Alternate Mediterranean Diet (AMED) or the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet were 30% less likely to suffer moderate or severe hearing loss than those whose eating habits were least like those diets, the study found.
The AMED diet features extra virgin olive oil, grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, fish and moderate intake of alcohol. The DASH diet emphasizes fruits and vegetables and low-fat dairy, while restricting salt.
According to a previous Health24 article, food can influence your hearing quality. Foods containing potassium, folic acid, zinc and magnesium can all improve your hearing.
A similar healthy diet called the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 may also reduce women’s risk of hearing loss, according to the study authors.
The researchers can’t show a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Still, “eating well contributes to overall good health, and it may also be helpful in reducing the risk of hearing loss,” Dr Curhan said in a hospital news release.
About 48 million Americans have hearing loss. While previous studies have examined how specific nutrients might affect risk, the link between overall diet and risk of hearing loss was unclear, the researchers noted.

Cape Town – John Mitchell’s departure to England appears to be a foregone conclusion, with only the release fee requested by the Bulls stalling the process somewhat.
Several media reports have indicated that Mitchell will become England’s new defence coach, with the New Zealand Herald even going as far as saying that the former All Blacks head coach “has officially agreed a deal to replace Paul Gustard”.
Mitchell is expected to start in his new role next month, with his contract set to run until after next year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan.
It is understood that that the English RFU is in negotiations about a compensation payment with the Bulls.
Afrikaans publication Netwerk24 reported on Sunday that that the Bulls had rejected the RFU’s offer of £50 000 (R900 000) in compensation and asked for £500 000 (R9 million) instead.
However, according to local rugby publication, SA Rugbymag, the amount is nowhere near £500 000 although it is understood to be more than 10%.
It has nevertheless become clear that Mitchell’s tenure at the Bulls will come to a premature end as his contract was due to only expire at the end of October 2019.
Mitchell was previously the England forwards coach between 1997 and 2000 under Sir Clive Woodward.
He will now work alongside head coach Eddie Jones.
The Constitutional Court is on Monday expected to hand down the much-anticipated judgment on whether Shaun Abrahams’ appointment as head of the NPA was unconstitutional.
The ruling is expected to be delivered at 10:00.
In February, the Constitutional Court heard an application to confirm two declaratory orders of constitutional invalidity, made by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on December 8.
The High Court declared former president Jacob Zuma’s conduct as unconstitutional in the termination of Mxolisi Nxasana’s appointment as the then National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).
The court ordered President Cyril Ramaphosa in December 2017 – while he was still deputy president – to appoint a new head of the NPA after the court declared the post vacant.
Zuma conflicted
Freedom under Law, Corruption Watch and the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution had gone to court seeking an order declaring Nxasana’s 2015 removal invalid.
Judge President Dunstan Mlambo ruled that it would not be just for the former prosecutions boss to be reinstated, and that then president Jacob Zuma was conflicted in appointing a new NDPP.Nxasana accepted a golden handshake from Zuma worth R17.3m in 2015.
An inquiry into his fitness to hold office was abruptly halted before his departure.
It was revealed in June that Ramaphosa was waiting for the Constitutional Court judgment on Abrahams before making a decision.
DA MP Choloane David Matsepe had asked him in a parliamentary question “whether he intends to remove Abrahams from the position of National Director [of Public Prosecutions] (NDPP)”, and “if not, why not?”
He also asked whether he had found that the NPA was capable of executing its mandate under Abrahams’ incumbent leadership.
On this, Ramaphosa said the effectiveness of law enforcement institutions depended to a great extent on capable and credible management.
“As we committed to do in the State of the Nation Address, we are working to ensure that the entire leadership of the National Prosecuting Authority is strengthened.”
