De Kock captained the Proteas for the first time in the 4th ODI as the visitors fell to a 3-run (D/L) loss in a rain-affected clash that was disrupted numerous times by the wet weather.
It wasn’t the result that De Kock would have wanted in his first match in charge, but there was at least some comfort for the 25-year-old.
In his brief but entertaining knock of 23 (13), De Kock became the 6th-fastest batsman in the history of ODI cricket to pass 4 000 runs.
It has taken the wicketkeeper just 94 innings to reach that milestone, and only 5 other cricketers have done it quicker.
De Kock’s opening partner Hashim Amla has set the standard and leads the way on that list having reached 4 000 runs in just 81 innings.
Viv Richards is 2nd having done it in 88 innings.
Both De Kock and Amla have shown glimpses of their best form in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, confirming that they are still South Africa’s best bet as an opening pair heading into next year’s 2019 World Cup in England.
Three Woodstock families are battling in court to be allowed to stay in a house where some of them have lived for more than 30 years.
Shariff Alexander, his girlfriend Nicole Puterson, and their one-year-old live in one room at 23 Gympie Street, Woodstock. They share the three-roomed property with eight other people, including children. Alexander moved in with his grandmother, who is the primary tenant, in 1980.
“My family has lived here for over 30 years. This is why I’m trying my best to fight for this place,” he said.
Alexander told GroundUp that residents’ troubles started a few months ago when the property was sold after the death of the owner. He said that since January, the occupants had been harassed by police. A resident, who lived in the lounge, had been forced off the premises when the new owner began renovating the space.
On Monday, Pilland Property Investments – the estate agents handling the sale of the house – brought an application in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court to evict the three families. The families, represented by Ndifuna Ukwazi Law Centre attorney Jonathan Cogger, are opposing the application.
The residents say in documents before the court that Alexander received a letter from the estate agents telling him to vacate the property by January 10. He said the letter was dated December 20, but he only received it on January 8.
Building unsafe and dangerous
On February 6, he was served with a notice of the eviction application. Two days later, representatives of the agents came to the property to tell the residents to leave, and on February 9, the agents, accompanied by a team of police officers, raided the property. The residents were asked if they paid rent. They were told to leave the property immediately, the residents said in an affidavit.
The same day, construction workers began renovating the inside of the property, without the occupants’ consent. The back door and some windows were removed, and plaster was stripped from most of the walls. An interior partition erected by the occupants was dismantled, and belongings of former occupants were thrown away, according to residents.

The families then sought help from housing activists, who referred them to Cogger.
When Cogger visited the property on February 17, a representative from the construction company told him the building was unsafe and dangerous. Puterson and her baby were inside at the time. Renovations inside the property were stopped later that afternoon.
According to the occupants’ affidavit, most of them make a living as informal traders or do piece work in the Woodstock area. None of the residents earn more than R1 500 a month.
“The occupiers submit that the ejectment from the property, without the provision of suitable well-located alternative accommodation by the City of Cape Town, would render us homeless and/or become a considerable burden to our families,” they said in their statement.
‘The place has also been vandalised’
When GroundUp visited the house, some items of clothing, a bath and rubble were scattered on the front stoep and on the adjacent plot. The front windows were taped up with cardboard and plastic. Inside, most of the wooden flooring in the lounge area had been removed. There was a large hole in the roof and most of the walls had been stripped.
Alexander said electricity and water had been switched off three weeks ago, without notice.
“Since the construction people were here, the place has also been vandalised.” Thieves had removed the wiring and cables in the roof, he said.
The case was postponed to September 4 for argument.
Attorney Anthea Pienaar-Julius, who represents the agents, is expected to argue that the property is no longer habitable.
Cogger, who is opposing the eviction application, is expected to argue that it is not “just and equitable to grant the eviction because the occupants have already been deprived of peaceful and undisturbed possession of the property”.
While the country was celebrating Women’s Day on Thursday, a grieving mother described her pain after losing her 23-year-old daughter, Rhodes student Khensani Maseko.
Maseko was laid to rest on Thursday.
It is suspected that Maseko took her own life on Friday after battling depression. She was raped, allegedly by her boyfriend, in May.
Prior to her death, Maseko took to Instagram, posting “No one deserves to be raped” along with the date of her birth and the day of the post – which was the same day she died.
Rhodes University announced on Monday that the alleged perpetrator had been suspended and the institution was working with the police as well as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). It was calling for an inquest into Maseko’s death.
In a moving “Message from Mama” read out by relative Sandiso Maseko, Maseko’s mother recalled the fond memories she had of her daughter – from her first day of school to her university days, where she exceeded all expectations.
‘I don’t know how I’m going to carry on’
“I was so thankful for God for you. I named you Nkanyezi because I believed you were going to be a shining star and truly you became a shining star,” Sandiso Maseko read.
Mourners gathered at the Nasrec Memorial Cemetery in Johannesburg where she was laid to rest. In attendance, among others, was Minister of Police Bheki Cele, Rhodes University vice-chancellor Sizwe Mabizela, and university student leaders.
They sang gospel songs while some in attendance sobbed uncontrollably. The podium was decorated with flowers where speakers took to the platform one by one. A picture of Maseko was also on display.
Her mother said she was an example to many in her family and community.
“I want to thank God for the memories we shared. I don’t know how I am going to carry on without you, but I trust God to help me through this tough, confusing time in my life.”
Mabizela said Maseko’s story had again raised issues of “anger and frustration” related to “women oppression”.
“Her death must force us to pause and reflect deeply on the society that we have become. Men need to be taught how to interact with people, and with women, in a loving, caring and respectful way,” Mabizela said.
Cele called for a new society where women could be free.
One of ‘our very own’
Gauteng EFF student leader Mandisa Mashego spoke strongly, laying the blame squarely at the door of Rhodes University, saying it was sad that they had come together on Women’s Day to bid farewell to “our very own”.
Mashego said they would never forgive the institution for “taking away Khensani”.
She also called on Cele to open satellite police stations on campuses.
“We are here to send a revolutionary send-off to one of our soldiers. We addressed her as the people’s president, because whenever people encountered a problem, they would easily approach Khensani,” president of the EFF student command Peter Keetse said.
Keetse recalled the #FeesMustFall movement, saying it happened under soldiers like Khensani.
“Many thought it could never be done, but it was something that was a reality.”
Keetse called on universities to offer better support to students who had suffered from depression.
“This should be the last incident, it must come to an end. We are deeply saddened by the passing of our own,” he said.

This just in: Sleep is not for the weak. According to Reese Witherspoon’s fitness trainer Ashley Borden, making sure you get those extra Zzs is crucial to tackling your workout.
“I always tell my clients that I would rather them get sleep instead of working out on four hours of sleep,” Borden told mindbodygreen.com. “Studies have shown that between 7.5 and eight hours of sleep every night helps the body repair itself and regulate inflammation in the body.”
Borden, who has also worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore, and Ryan Gosling, said sleep also affects your metabolic process.
“[Not getting enough sleep] produces a higher amount of the inflammatory stress hormone, cortisol,” she said in the interview. “Cortisol has its time and place in our bodies, but not at night. Cortisol heightens our alertness, the last thing we need when we crave sleep.”
Aside from sleeping in, Borden also recommends that her clients avoid sugar and load up on greens.
“Sugars are inflammatory and trigger more sugar cravings, along with increasing inflammatory cortisol levels, which cause belly fat,” she said. “Choose vegetables that are all the colors of the rainbow and focus on dark green veggies, too. These give us phytonutrients, which have many antioxidant assets that can put a stop to cell damage, which helps strengthen our immune system, prevents cancer, has a positive effect on our hormones, and improves our overall health and vitality.”
And even though temperatures are dropping, Borden says it’s important to take your workout outdoors.
“Getting outdoors for even 10 minutes provides the body with a natural dose of vitamin D,” she said. “Being outside also provides amazing mental stimulation.”
One way she gets her clients moving? An outdoor workout that sounds like something Witherspoon’s Wild character, Cheryl Strayed, would approve of.
“I have taken clients out for power walks with a backpack full of mini bands and bands with handles to create a hillside neighborhood circuit workout,” she said.
