The crime scene in Bishop Lavis after Cape Town detective, Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear, was shot and killed.

A 39-year-old suspect will appear at the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Friday in connection with the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear, 52.
Kinnear, who was attached to the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit, was shot dead in front of his house in Bishop Lavis in Cape Town on Friday.
According to Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, the suspect was arrested in Gauteng on Wednesday and details surrounding the murder are still unknown.
“More arrests are not ruled out as investigations are still underway,” Mulaudzi said.
According to Netwerk24, the suspect is a former professional rugby player from Springs on Gauteng’s East Rand.
Western Cape detectives reportedly took him in for questioning on Tuesday night.
The 39-year-old man, the son of a retired police colonel, was seemingly responsible for the tracking of Kinnear’s cellphone, Netwerk24 reported.

Daily Maverick reported that the man was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Friday before being transferred to Cape Town.
Questioned until early hours
Sources told Netwerk24 on Wednesday that the man, who is believed to be a debt collector, was taken to a police station on the East Rand where he was questioned until the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The man reportedly tracks cellphone signals to earn extra money and was, according to him, duped into believing he was tracking the signal of a jealous man’s wife. The man identified himself as “Mohamad”, Daily Maverick reported.
The publication also reported that, a week before his death, Kinnear was in Springs to continue his investigation into alleged underworld boss Nafiz Modack. Kinnear also investigated eight high-ranking police officers accused of colluding with fellow officers at the Central Firearms Registry.
At the time of his death, Kinnear was reportedly supposed to return to Gauteng and make further arrests of two high-ranking police officers.
Suspected assassination
The killing is suspected to have been an assassination, although this has not been confirmed by police. They would also not speculate about the possible motive for the murder.

Residents in Bishop Lavis told News24 that shots were heard at around 15:00 on Friday.
In a statement, national police commissioner General Khehla John Sitole said: “We are all saddened by this tragic untimely loss of Colonel Kinnear and his murder is a huge loss to South Africa and its people.”
Police Minister Bheki Cele said Kinnear was “failed” by the police. The minister said this at a briefing in the Kinnear family’s driveway on Saturday, after spending almost an hour with Kinnear’s wife Nicolette and sons, Carlisle and Casleigh.
“I must say unfortunately, at the moment, there are more questions than answers … but right now, as it stands, it does look like we have failed as the police. We could have done things better.”
Cele said he would not hesitate to ask President Cyril Ramaphosa for additional resources, if needed, to track down Kinnear’s killers.
Meanwhile, on the streets of Kinnear’s beloved home suburb of Bishop Lavis, the local Community Police Forum (CPF) planned to hold a candlelight vigil outside the Kinnear family home on Thursday afternoon to honour him.

Two of the three police officers accused of killing
Nathaniel Julies were “thirsty for blood” when the teenager was shot
dead, the Protea Magistrate’s Court heard during their bail application this
week.
Prosecutor Mzwandile Mrwabe said Sergeant Simon
Scorpion Ndyalvane, 46, and Constable Caylene Whiteboy, 23, went on a “wild, wild west” shooting spree when Julies was killed.
Mrwabe said Ndyalvane booked out a shotgun from the
Eldorado Park police station without ammunition.
The two officers and three others headed to Freedom
Park near Eldorado Park and found a crowd of people drinking alcohol, Mrwabe
added.
Mrwabe said:
They first opened fire at people who were drinking alcohol in Freedom Park. They then drove away because they had not quenched their thirst for blood. They then shot at this boy. Are these not wild, wild west tendencies? Yes, they are.
Mrwabe added that Julies, who had Down Syndrome,
was outside his home, next to a truck, on 26 August, when a police van driven
by Ndyalvane arrived.
“When seeing a police van approaching him, he
(Julies) greeted the police. Ndyalvane then insulted Julies and chased him
away. The boy left and returned. Ndyalvane then instructed Whiteboy to shoot at
the boy. Their actions showed hunger for blood,” said Mrwabe.
‘They will tamper with our case’
The court heard that Ndyalvane failed to disclose
to his seniors that the shotgun he had booked out was used to kill a person.
Mrwabe pleaded with the court to deny bail to
Ndyalvane, Whiteboy and their co-accused, Detective Sergeant Foster
Netshiongolo, 37.
Mrwabe said:
There is no closure for the community in Eldorado Park because the matter has not gone to trial. Witnesses are known to them. For now, Netshiongolo might know one or two witnesses. If Netshiongolo, who was at the scene, saw witnesses, he might have shared their identities with his co-accused. Inside their police van there were three other officers who might have made statements to the police.
Outside the court, Julies’ mother Bridget Harris
said she was confident that the wheels of justice were grinding in the right
direction.
“I am more confident than before because
justice is now taking its course. I have the feeling that the case is going
somewhere, and I say we are in [a more] proper situation [than] we were in
before,” said Harris.
Regional National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)
spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said they were opposing bail because some of
the witnesses work with the accused.
“There is [a] likelihood that they will tamper
with our case. Their release will undermine public peace. There is a public
outcry about their release on bail. The mother has given supportive documents
to the State, opposing their release,” said Mjonondwane.
Judgment in the bail application has been reserved
until Monday.

Springbok fullback Warrick Gelant is expected to make his first appearance for the Stormers at Loftus Versfeld against the Lions in their Super Fan Saturday clash.
The Stormers will face the Lions on Saturday at 19:00 in the second match of a doubleheader which will see the Sharks take on the Bulls beforehand.
Stormers head coach John Dobson has named eight Springboks in the Stormers matchday squad for their return to rugby this weekend.
Gelant starts at fullback, while the likes of prop Leon Lyons, utility forward Hannes Gouws, flyhalf Tim Swiel, centre Michal Hazner, wing Angelo Davids and fullback Tristan Leyds are all set to earn their first Stormers caps from the extended replacements bench.
Gelant is joined by fellow Springboks Damian Willemse, Herschel Jantjies, captain Siya Kolisi, Frans Malherbe, Scarra Ntubeni and Steven Kitshoff in the starting line-up, while Bongi Mbonambi is among the replacements.
Wing Leolin Zas will make his first appearance for the Stormers since early 2017, having returned to his home franchise last year.
Dobson said that there is plenty of excitement among the squad to finally get back onto the field and pull the jersey on.
“It has been a while for everyone, players coaches and our fans are all hungry for rugby, so we cannot wait to get there and take the next step as we build towards the new competition which kicks off next month,” he said.
“Everyone has worked very hard to get to this point and while it will be great to see our high-profile players out on the pitch, we are also looking forward to seeing some new faces and seeing how they go against a quality Lions side.”
