Cape Town, Saturday 12 May 2018 – SARS Customs officials at Cape Town International Airport confiscated $156 850 (about R1 946 802) which was hidden in the luggage of a South African man en route to Dubai.
After receiving a tip-off from Customs officials at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), the man was stopped by Customs officials and members of the Detector Dog Unit as he was about to embark on the flight to Dubai.
One of the detector dogs reacted positively to the luggage and the bag was opened up and searched. Customs officials then discovered 10 packets of currency hidden amongst his clothing.
The case – for failure to declare money when departing the country – was handed over to the SAPS for further investigation.
“As part of our integrated operations, the possible smuggling of currency was successfully detected by our officers,” said Chief Officer: Customs and Excise, Teboho Mokoena. “We have noticed recently that passengers who normally use ORTIA to try and take out currency, have started rerouting via other ports. This is why it is important that all of our units work closely together to prevent this from happening. I would like to commend the cooperation amongst the different divisions within Customs which led to this successful bust.”

Ugh, the fire ripping through your crotch – and the uncontrollable urge to go constantly. Face it: You’ve got a urinary tract infection or UTI.
The problem is pretty self-explanatory – it’s a bacterial infection in your urinary tract, most often in your bladder.
If you’ve had one, welcome to the club. As many as 40 to 60% of women are saddled with the infection during their lifetime, and one-quarter of women have recurrent infections, according to the National Institutes of Health in the US.
Why is it more common in women than men? Since ladies have a shorter urethra, it makes it easier for bacteria from the rectum, like E. coli, to cause an infection.
As if the symptoms weren’t bad enough, you also may be wondering if you can still get busy – that is, if you’re up for it. Here, your most burning (er, pressing) questions, answered:
Here’s the reality: Forget having sex right now, advises Dr Nicole Williams, founder of the Gynecology Institute of Chicago. Let’s just say things can go from bad to very bad if you get it on. “If you have sex with a UTI, it could actually worsen the infection by re-seeding the bacteria that caused the infection in the first place,” Dr Williams says.
Can you pass a UTI to your partner?
No, UTIs aren’t contagious. Whew! That said, research shows STDs are commonly misdiagnosed as UTIs in the ER. (Symptoms can be similar.) And STDs are passed via sex. Therefore, someone may think they gave their partner a UTI when in reality, it could be chlamydia or gonorrhoea.
First, get treated. Your doctor may test your urine to confirm a UTI. Based on the results, they’ll likely prescribe an antibiotic. “Once your complete treatment course has been finished and you don’t have any more symptoms, then it’s probably safe to have sex again,” says Dr Williams. Usually, this takes one week, she says.
That said if you’re done with the antibiotics, but you feel severe pain or burning during sex, that’s a sign that your infection hasn’t quite cleared up. Save the friskiness for another day.
First of all: Never have vaginal sex immediately after anal sex, Dr Williams advises. And it doesn’t hurt to make sure your partner doesn’t graze the anal area during sex, which could spread bacteria.
You’ve also probably heard that you should pee after sex, to get rid of any lingering bacteria. While post-coital peeing can’t hurt, “it’s never been proven to reduce the risk of a UTI,” says Dr Williams.
If you’re prone to getting UTIs, talk to your gynae about cranberry pills, which prevent E. coli bacteria from attaching to the bladder wall, says Dr Williams. And remember: With treatment, you’ll feel relief – and get busy again – soon.

Things masturbation causes: happiness, satisfaction, amazing orgasms. And now, some people on the Internet are apparently claiming that it causes acne, too.
I called a dermatologist to get all the details on this thought-provoking sex-turned-skincare dilemma.
What actually causes acne?
“Acne is caused by a combination of four things: excess sebum (oil) production, hyperkeratinisation of the pores (aka clogging of pores with keratin/dead skin cells, because they don’t know how to shed), bacteria and inflammation,” says dermatologist and pediatrician Dr Tsippora Shainhouse.
Notice what’s not part of that abovementioned foursome? Solo acts, twosomes, threesomes… Masturbation – and sex in general – is not making you break out.
Dr Shainhouse says that hormones (specifically testosterone and progesterone) can increase oil production, and can also increase the inflammatory response. That’s why your breakouts are often worse in the week leading up to your period – because that’s when your body is producing more progesterone and testosterone.
Why does the hormonal thing matter? “Hormones are charged up and unbalanced during adolescence and puberty (which is why adolescents develop acne),” says Dr Shainhouse. “Puberty can also be a time of self-exploration and, perhaps, masturbation, so the ‘fear’ likely arose that masturbation might be what is causing acne,” she says.
Dr Shainhouse says that while masturbation (and sex) can temporarily increase your testosterone levels, it’s not nearly enough to have an impact on your long-term skin health – especially since those levels shrink back to normal within minutes. (Sounds like another aspect of sex we know all too well, hmm?)
That’s not to say that your sex life isn’t affecting your skin in other ways. Dr Shainhouse says some research has shown that adrenaline levels rise in the blood during orgasm – which explains both the sweating and the healthy glow immediately after the act. (So yes, Samantha Jones really was onto something).
