Cape Town – Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng is the newly appointed vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town.
Outgoing Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Price and Phakeng addressed the media on Saturday after the university council made a unanimous decision.
Phakeng said she was “humbled” by the appointment, which takes effect on July 1, 2018.
“My goal is to transform the university while building on its excellence,” said Phakeng.
She said that she had always driven the transformation agenda in academic research.
She did not take her new position lightly.
“It’s amazing that my appointment is a possibility,” said Phakeng.
“There are so many poor, African people who have walked this journey so that this can be possible. I am honoured to continue this journey.”
Phakeng explained that she had not initially applied for the position.
“I wasn’t sure if UCT was ready for me. I’m a bit young, my earrings are too big – I’m too colourful,” she said.
“I wasn’t sure if this was the right time. The affirmation of senate was incredibly humbling. I didn’t think I’d get 75% of the vote.”
Price said he was excited by Phakeng’s appointment.
“This is exciting because this should be seen as a renewal. The university has come through a very stormy period over the last few years and the job of a vice-chancellor is difficult,” said Price.
“We are reaching a period of stability and Professor Phakeng’s appointment is appropriate in light of our renewal.”
Phakeng is a highly respected professor of mathematics and has published over 80 research papers.
She first joined UCT in July 2016 and took over from Professor Danie Visser as the deputy vice-chancellor of research and internationalisation in January 2017.
Before moving to UCT in 2006, she was vice-principal of research and innovation at the University of South Africa (Unisa).
Her long list of achievements includes becoming the first South African black researcher to be appointed to co-chair a study commissioned by the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction in 2008.
Cape Town – Three Working on Fire helicopters, as well as a spotter plane and at least seventy firefighters have been dispatched to assist combating the fire currently sweeping across Table Mountain in Cape Town.
Working on Fire spokesperson, Lauren Howard, said the helicopters, spotter plane and firefighters had been dispatched to assist Table Mountain National Park, PDMC and the City of Cape Town in containing a fire above Tafelberg Road.
Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, said an extensive area of vegetation was burning above the Tafelberg Road, and the fire had not yet been contained.
Layne said strong winds were carrying the fire away from the road, making it difficult to combat the flames, which is why the helicopters were being utilised.
He said nine fire fighting vehicles had been dispatched to assist the Table mountain Nature Reserve and Working on Fire Crews to combat the fire.
“Many of you will know that through the secret agreement between the Presidency and Mr Zuma there was an agreement to pay Mr Zuma’s fees. I asked how much these legal fees are. He [President Cyril Ramaphosa] simply refused to answer. We then threatened legal action against the presidency … [and] were given a figure of R15,000. There can be no secret deal with a private citizen to use state resources. Otherwise all of us must be entitled to legal protection from the state,” Maimane said.
“We must stop the payment of the legal fees of Mr Zuma. We must recoup the money paid. The president must make transparency the agreement they reached between themselves and Mr Zuma. We believe that agreement will be unlawful and irrational.”
He said should Ramaphosa not give them sufficient reasons they will take the matter on review.
When you start to get physical with someone new, it’s only natural to wonder (read: stress over) if the sex is going to be good – for both parties involved.
But Match’s Singles in America survey should help you feel a little more relaxed about the whole thing.
They polled more than 5 500 single people from different age groups, ethnicities and incomes across the country and found 83% of singles (regardless of their sexual orientation) listed having a caring and enthusiastic partner as their top two indicators of good sex.
Obviously, being able to orgasm is also important, but it was ranked as slightly less important, as was being a good communicator and solid kisser. So you can ditch the stress of delivering mind-blowing orgasms or crazy moves – apparently people just want to have sex with a good person (imagine that!).
Of course, the survey covered the good and the bad. It found that there are certain things singles don’t like in bed, including too much talking, a lack of passion, little movement, being with a bad kisser and not saying “I love you” (when the relationship gets to that point, naturally).
To be fair, the majority of singles said that they think sex gets better after you do it a few times with someone, so you shouldn’t stress too much if the first time isn’t utterly amazing.
As for one-night stands, 30% of men said it’s the best kind of sex, while just 15% of women said the same. But both 19% of men and women said that one-night stands are the worst kind of sex. Basically, they’re kind of a gamble.
Overall, men are three-times more likely to use a one-night stand to try to start a relationship. Not only that, millennials are 48% more likely to sleep with someone right away to see if there’s a connection.
Ultimately, sex should be something that you both enjoy. But it’s good to know that being caring and enthusiastic in bed are the top satisfiers.
