Both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns recorded victories on Wednesday evening to set up a title deciding Saturday.
Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp was reluctant to show any emotion as he kept his cool during his post-match interview.
Sundowns mentor Pitso Mosimane believes his side has done brilliantly to be level on points with the Glamour Boys.
It was a Wednesday night to remember as both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns recorded important victories to set up a mouth-watering final round on Saturday to decide the winners of the 2019/20 Absa Premiership title.
In a nervy encounter at Orlando Stadium, Amakhosi held onto a slender 1-0 lead for majority of the clash against Chippa United after Khama Billiat tapped-in from close range to earn his side a vital three points.
Meanwhile, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Masandawana thrashed relegation threatened Polokwane City 3-0 courtesy of goals from Anele Ngcongca, Themba Zwane and Keletso Makgalwa.
Amakhosi still remain at the summit of the Absa Premiership standings with 53 points, the same as second place Sundowns, with only goal difference separating the two South African powerhouses.
In his post-match interview with SuperSport TV, Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp was reluctant to fall into the trap of getting ahead of himself as he praised his charges’ “fighting spirit” against the Chilli Boys.
“Of course I am very happy with the entire team, the technical team and the players that we have,” Middendorp said with a deadpan expression.
“A win with a lot of fighting spirit and that’s what we needed today and what we will need on Saturday.”
Chiefs face-off against a relegation threatened Baroka FC on Saturday while Sundowns simultaneously take on Black Leopards.
Middendorp is aware of what could happen if his charges do not show up on the day with the right kind of mindset after Baroka shockingly beat the Brazilians last week.
“We have Baroka, a fantastic team as everybody knows … you have to be, otherwise you can’t beat Sundowns,” Middendorp said.
“Our competitors [Sundowns] are playing Black Leopards on the same level where you have to expect both opponents will not give anything away at all.”
Sundowns have been lagging behind Amakhosi since August last year and at one stage Masandawana were 13-points adrift of the log leaders due to their involvement in the CAF Champions League.
Fast-forward to September and Pitso Mosimane’s charges are now level.
“It’s a cup final [on Saturday]. Whoever wins it, wins it but we’re not going to give it to anybody. We all have to work for it. It’s on the edge,” said Mosimane in his post-match interview.
“We had one chance this year, only one chance against Baroka [to go above Chiefs]. Otherwise we’ve been chasing. But, what’s good? To close a 13-point gap. This is what I told the boys. I give them credit.
“While other people [teams] were resting, where were we? In Cairo, in Morocco … fighting for the Telkom Cup, fighting for the Nedbank Cup. I mean we can’t be that ungrateful.
“If we get it, we get it. We have done our best. And by the way, what’s more important tonight, a Champions League spot for the seventh year in a row.”
Spain PM concerned at Madrid spike in virus infections
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Tuesday his government is concerned about a spike in coronavirus infections in the capital Madrid.
Spain was one of the hardest-hit countries when the coronavirus struck Europe this year before a strict lockdown helped reduce the outbreak’s spread.
But infections have surged since the lockdown measures were fully removed at the end of June, especially in Madrid, with the rise in infections often linked to the return of nightlife and social gatherings.
“We are worried about the state of public health and the evolution of the virus in Madrid,” Sanchez said in an interview with news radio Ser.
The socialist premier added that “some” regional governments which he did not identify needed to boost their ability to track Covid-19 cases and improve their “strategic capacities” in the fight against the virus.
Spain’s central government last week made 2 000 soldiers available to help regional governments, which are responsible for health care, to track people who have been exposed to those infected with virus.
So far 11 of the country’s 17 regional governments had requested soldiers, Sanchez said. Madrid, which is governed by the conservative Popular Party, requested 150 soldiers.
Spain registered over 23 000 new Covid-19 cases since Friday, health emergency chief Fernando Simon told a news conference on Monday, bringing the total to 462 858.
Of the 1 656 hospitalisations from the disease during the last seven days, 420, or 25 percent, were in Madrid, according to health ministry figures.
The region accounted for nearly half of the 141 deaths in the last seven days.Spain has recorded a total of 29 094 virus deaths since the start of the pandemic, one of the world’s highest tolls.

Aerosol containment methods may not be protecting health workers against SARS-CoV-2 as touted
The effectiveness of such devices was never properly tested
It was found that the aerosol box actually increases exposure to virus particles – by up to five times
Aerosol boxes meant to protect health care workers when they intubate Covid-19 patients may actually increase their exposure to airborne virus particles, an Australian study warns.
Intubation is done when patients are placed on a ventilator.
Aerosol boxes have been touted as a quick, simple way to protect workers, but their effectiveness and safety were never clinically tested. No international guideline on personal protective equipment has endorsed their use.
Even though experts have raised concern that the devices may put health care workers at risk, they are in use worldwide.
Increased exposure to virus particles
In this study, researchers tested the effectiveness of five aerosol containment methods (aerosol box; sealed box with and without suction; vertical drape; and horizontal drape) compared with no intervention.
Volunteers held a bottle of harmless fluid just under their mouth, and coughed every 30 seconds. Detection devices were used to count different-sized airborne particles and assess particle spread for five minutes.
Compared with using no containment device, exposure to airborne particles of all sizes was higher when an aerosol box was used, the study found.
If Covid-19 particles act the same way as the fluid used in this simulation, the results suggest the aerosol box increases exposure to virus particles – in some cases by a factor of five times or more, according to findings published on in July in the journal Anaesthesia.
The investigation was conducted by a team at Intensive Care and Anaesthesia Specialists at Eastern Health in Melbourne. Peter Chan and Joanna Simpson, who led the effort, said the research team was surprised by the findings.
Minimal to no benefit
“Spikes of airborne particles were clearly seen, coinciding with patient coughing. We believe that these represent particles escaping from the arm access holes in the aerosol box,” the researchers reported.
The race to provide protective equipment has resulted in a variety of devices, but evidence of their safety and effectiveness has been lacking, the study authors said.
“This study demonstrates that devices such as the aerosol box we tested – which is typical of designs used worldwide – confer minimal to no benefit in containing aerosols during an aerosol-generating procedure and may increase rather than decrease airborne particle exposure,” the authors concluded.
In a journal news release, Chan said if the aerosol box were sold as a product and regulated, it would probably need to be recalled immediately due to the potential infection risk for healthcare workers.
“Unfortunately, because these devices have been donated and are not regulated in any way, healthcare workers might be continuing to increase their exposure to Covid-19 while thinking they are protecting themselves,” he added.
