The Eastern Cape Department of Education hosted the Natural Sciences and Technology Olympiad 2017, where 51 learners participated from 17 Education districts, at the Education Leadership Institute in East London on the 25 August 2017.
This initiative started in 2014, and learners compete on three different levels, first they compete within their schools, where 3 top performers are chosen to represent their schools at district level. “Today we see the winners of the districts competing in the Provincial Olympiad,”said M Zihlangu, Subject Advisor at Amathole East. According to him, the Olympiad gives learners exposure and prepares them to participate in the national programmes of South African Association of Science and Technology Education (SAASTE) “Since the inception of this programme, the participation of districts has increased,” added Zihlangu. “It has also helped improve learner performance, the questions in Olympiads open the minds of learners about the content of science,” concluded Mahlangu.
Each participating learner was given a common paper with about 60 questions to complete within a certain amount of time; thereafter marking and moderation was done immediately to determine the winners. Should there be a tie, as experienced in today’s Olympiad, learners are given a rewrite until there is a clear winner. In this case two rewrite had to be done as one refused to back down. After a nail biting session only one became victorious.
Subsequent to an intense three rounds of silence there was an eagerness for results which saw three learners emerging as the overall winners, taking the number 1,2 and 3 positions. The number one spot was taken by Ayanda Ntantam from Mthatha, followed by Sebabatso Manka from Sterkspruit and ended off with Uviwe Sinomthombo from Queenstown, who took second and third place.
With a noticeable amount of districts that do not participate in the Olympiad, the Department has made it a priority to employ subject advisors and Education Development Officers (EDOs) that speak to these programmes. A bulletin has already been put out for all the aforementioned posts.
According to Subject Advisors, young minds need to be nurtured hence these programmes.
Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE), has embarked on a journey to be informative through their wellness programmes, as experienced by lady departmental officials at the Womens Day celebrations, held in East London recently.
With an increase in diabetes, high blood pressure and general ills, the Wellness Directorate works hard in ensuring physical activities for employees to take part in, such as aerobics, netball, soccer and fun games. Not only concentrating on physical activities, but also causes of such illnesses. Wellness invited a host of professionals to speak on eating patterns and how that can affect performance at the work place, an audiologist, Virgin Active, GEMS and the benefits they offer to government employees, tips and ideas that can be texted directly to the phone on ideas for exercise at the work place.
As the ECDoE services hundreds of thousands of employees, stakeholders and clients, they too touched on the mental wellbeing of employees and how interpersonal relations affect the work place environment, what we can do to better those relationships, avoid animosity and a poor working environment. They shared best working practices and how to keep emotions in check. After a day filled with fun, laughter and a wealth of knowledge, lady government officials went away feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the responsibilities they have of servicing the Eastern Cape. The day went into night ending with a cocktail gala dinner which saw women dressing to the nines, to celebrate the women of 1956 and the current generation that is.
This occasion was graced by the presence of highly influential women within the sphere of government. Present amongst others were, Deputy Mayor Councilor Z Matane, Buffalo City Metro Municipality and Member of the National Council of Provinces, Zoleka Capa.
A breakdown of the Employment Equity Report was also presented which gave a clear indication of the number of women employed by the Department in specific positions compared to their male counterparts.
It was interesting to note that, very few women occupy Senior Management positions as opposed to males. The employment equity statics reveal that no woman is employed at salary level 15 and 16, only 4 at salary level 14 and 11 at salary level 13. Compared to their counterparts the numbers tell a different story where 3 males are at salary level 15 and 16, 6 at salary level 14 and 30 at salary level13.
It is evident that more still needs to be done in terms of elevating women to positions of leadership. One can only hope that the agenda of transformation will accelerate placement of more women in leadership positions.

Johannesburg – Protesters in Riverlea set fire to a Rea Vaya Bus station on Commando Road on Monday morning, Johannesburg Metro Police said.

JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said protesters had also barricaded Main Reef Road and Commando Road with rocks and burning tyres.
Minnaar said they were protesting over housing.
He said the protest was affecting traffic from Roodepoort and New Canada Road in Soweto.
Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
No arrests have yet been made.

Carltonville – The body of a third miner was brought to the surface at the Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville, Harmony Gold said on Monday.
“Our sincerest condolences go to the family and friends of the deceased. We will not rest until the other two employees have been found and brought to surface,” chief executive Peter Steenkamp said.
On Saturday and Sunday the bodies of two miners who had succumbed to their injuries, were found and brought to the surface.

The search will continue for two employees still trapped 3.1km below the surface.
A tremor measuring 1.2 on the Richter scale caused sections of the gold mine to collapse at around 10:30 on Friday, August 25.
There were about 3 000 miners working at the time of the tremor and all apart from the five were safe.
On Saturday, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) blamed the company for alleged below standard working conditions.
AMCU’s Gauteng West health and safety chairperson Nathi Mathunjwa said at the time that the traveling wheel support for the miners to go down was not up to the mine’s standard.
Harmony spokesperson Marian van der Walt said on Saturday that all parties had a responsibility to ensure safety at the mine.
“We will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident once all the employees have been brought to safety.”
Cape Town – There were a number of surprises along the way as the eight franchises picked their squads for the upcoming T20 Global League, and there were a number of players who cashed in and became millionaires overnight.
The 16 rounds of draft picks all came with a different cash bracket, with the first round seeing at players pocketing R1.75 million and the final two rounds seeing players earn a cool R130 000.
In total, each of the eight teams spent R11.7 million on its players, bringing the total amount of cash splashed on Sunday to R93.7 million.
Chris Morris, Dale Steyn, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Dane Paterson, Colin Ingram, JJ Smuts and Alex Hales were the eight players picked in the first round.
It is a massive boost to the likes of Paterson and Smuts, who have only just broken onto the international scene.
Paterson, for example, has been opening the bowling for SWD in the Africa T20 Cup, and now he is the most expensive player in the country and an overnight millionaire.
Even as you look down the draft, to the very bottom, there are players who have had their lives changed in an instant.
The last name out the hat was that of 29-year-old Kyle Nipper, who has struggled for the best part of a decade to break into the domestic scene.
He was chosen as the Pretoria Mavericks’ last player, and the R130 000 will surely be more than anything he has ever made during his time at the Dolphins or KZN Inland.
Andile Phehlukwayo, at just 21, was also struggling to come to grips with how much money he had just netted at the draft.
Having been picked in the third round by the Joburg Giants, the Proteas allrounder walks away with R1.3 million.
Aiden Markram (Nelson Mandela Bay Stars), Farhaan Behardien (Mavericks) and Tabraiz Shamsi (Stellenbosch Monarchs) were all chosen in the second round of the draft and they also have life-changing pay cheques of R1.495 million coming their way.
Dolphins veteran Robbie Frylinck, meanwhile, will earn R1.105 million for being picked by the Mavericks in the fourth round along with Lungi Ngidi, Shaun von Berg, rassie ban der Dussen, Bjorn Fortuin, Chris Jonker and Heinrich Klaasen.

JOHANNESBURG – A body of a third miner trapped at Harmony’s Kusasalethu Gold Mine near Carletonville has been brought to surface.
“Regrettably, he succumbed to his injuries,” the company said on Monday.
Five employees were trapped underground on Friday following a seismic event that resulted in a fall of ground approximately 3 kilometres below surface.

The company said rescue efforts to find the remaining two workers are continuing.
“Our sincerest condolences go to the family and friends of the deceased. We will not rest until the other two employees have been found and brought to surface,” said Peter Steenkamp, chief executive officer.
The latest incident has again raised questions around mine safety issues.
Harmony Gold is appealing for calm, saying it will launch a full investigation into the incident.
