The Frenchman had never been knocked out of Europe’s elite club competition as Real coach, leading them to three consecutive victories between 2016 and 2018 in his first spell before returning to the job last year.
But Madrid had been left with a mountain to climb in this tie after throwing away the lead to lose 2-1 in the first leg in Spain in February, before the coronavirus forced the competition into hibernation.
An identical defeat at an empty Etihad Stadium means it is City who advance 4-2 on aggregate.
Without Sergio Ramos due to suspension, Real were undone by mistakes by their other first-choice centre-back.
Varane was dispossessed inside the box in the ninth minute allowing Raheem Sterling to put City ahead, and his poor headed backpass attempt gifted Gabriel Jesus another goal midway through the second half.
Before that second goal the tie had been in the balance with the in-form Karim Benzema having scored for the visitors just before the half-hour mark.
The circumstances may be highly unusual, but this is still City’s finest Champions League result, their most significant victory in a knock-out tie.
Their best performance in the competition remains a run to the semi-finals in 2016, when they went out rather limply to Real.
Now they should very possibly be considered the favourites to win the competition in Lisbon on 23 August.
If they do so, the victory would taste all the sweeter coming so soon after their successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport against a two-year ban from Europe handed down by UEFA for breaches of their Financial Fair Play rules.
They have already qualified for next season’s tournament after coming second in the Premier League but now they can look forward to facing Lyon in the quarter-finals next Saturday at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Real, meanwhile, will get over this.
They have dined out on success in the Champions League in recent years but their main objective after the coronavirus shutdown was to win La Liga and they did that.
Zidane’s team overhauled Barcelona thanks to 10 successive victories after La Liga returned in June but they were not especially prolific in front of goal during that run, despite Benzema’s fine form.
It was already going to be an uphill struggle for them in the absence of Ramos, sent off late in the first leg, and their task became even harder after they conceded an early opener.
City’s high pressing paid off as Varane was barged off the ball in his own area by Jesus, who squared for Sterling to roll in.
There was a response from the 13-time European champions, though, with Benzema and Eden Hazard both forcing saves from Ederson before their equaliser on the night arrived in the 28th minute.
A fine move ended with Benzema feeding Rodrygo and the young Brazilian clipping in a cross from the right for the Frenchman, who rose above Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho to head in from the edge of the six-yard box.
It was his 65th goal in the Champions League, putting him one clear of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski on the overall list and behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Raul.
Unfortunately for Real, Benzema was not able to add to that tally and this tie was effectively ended by another Varane blooper.
The Frenchman struggled with an awkward high ball downfield and his header back towards Thibaut Courtois was short, allowing Jesus to prod it beyond the goalkeeper and into the net.
Real will not return to Lisbon, where they won the Champions League in 2014, but the dream remains alive for Guardiola and City.

The Western Cape government wants the Covid-19 alcohol ban lifted urgently to prevent a jobs “bloodbath” in the wine and hospitality industry.
The province feels because it has hospital beds to spare since the coronavirus peak has passed, it can do so with safety precautions in place.
If the ban continues, almost 200 000 jobs could be lost in these industries, and a pandemic of unemployment and starvation will rise, it says.
The Western Cape government wants the alcohol sales and wine producing sector reopened urgently to prevent a jobs bloodbath.
It believed that although the pandemic was not gone, the peak had passed in the province, and with safety precautions followed, alcohol sales could resume safely.
Earlier Premier Alan Winde announced that as of 13:00 on 7 August, the Western Cape had 8 631 active cases of Covid-19, with a total of 97 506 confirmed cases and 85 528 recoveries.
It recorded another 34 deaths, bringing the total to 3 347 people.
“We fully agree that alcohol related harms are a major problem in our province and country,” a statement said on Friday at the conclusion of a meeting of top officials in the provincial government.
“Our provincial data points to this. When the domestic sale of alcohol was suspended during the lockdown, and then again recently, the number of trauma cases dropped immediately.
Isolation
“But we cannot view this in isolation of the other consequences of a continued ‘ban’ on the sale of alcohol is causing.”
The provincial government said:
– Wine industry body Vinpro estimated that the initial nine-week ban on local sales, and five-week ban on exports would result in 18 000 jobs lost, and 80 wineries and 350 grape producers closing their businesses over the next year;
– Stats SA food and beverage data for April and May showed a decline in revenue for this sector of 94% and 87% respectively from 2019 revenues;
– Wine is the third biggest export product of the Western Cape economy and contributes 6.5% of the value of exports from the province;
– Only 51% (2018) of the crop was exported, making the sector reliant on the domestic market to survive;
– Of the 2 873 producers of wine grapes in South Africa, 40% produced less than 100 tons, and a further 36% less than 500 tons a year, which meant the wine industry was dominated by smaller businesses;
– The hospitality sector relied on alcohol sales to makes ends meet, and the tourism sector supported over 200 000 jobs.
According to the provincial government, beds were available should the need arise.
The pandemic was believed to have passed its peak, with metro hospitals 69% full, down from 71% the week before (all patients).
In addition, at the field hospitals: the Hospital of Hope at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, with 800 beds, had 91 patients admitted; the Brackengate Field Hospital, with a capacity of over 330 beds, had 47 patients admitted; and, the Thusong Centre, with a capacity of 60 beds, had 20 patients admitted.
Peaks
Earlier on Friday, Winde paid tribute to partners Doctors Without Borders as they moved from The Thusong Centre to help other provinces cope with their peaks.
“In fact, the Western Cape government has now reached a point where we have to carefully consider whether all our field hospitals need to stay open, given these statistics and the scenario provisioning projections.
“We therefore have a complex situation to address in our province, where the continued suspension on the sale of alcohol will result in a jobs bloodbath – mainly in our poorer, rural communities. We cannot ignore this.”
The sector would have to abide by the “new normal”, and an alcohol harms task team would monitor the situation.
“For as long as the Western Cape can assure access to health facilities for all Covid-19 patients, all businesses should be allowed to open safely, following clear health guidelines designed to slow the spread of Covid-19,” the province urged.
This would be discussed with national government, Winde said.

The human papillomavirus vaccine protects against most cervical and anal cancers
Many parents have safety concerns about having their children vaccinated against HPV
Experts, however, emphasise that the vaccine is entirely safe
More than a decade of research has shown that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine protects against a host of cancers, yet a new study finds that only half of American teens complete the multiple-shot regimen.
Why? Researchers discovered that many parents still harbour safety concerns about the vaccine, even though it guards against 90% of all cervical and anal cancers.
Using data from the 2017-2018 National Immunization Survey, researchers analysed responses from parents or caregivers of more than 82,000 U.S. teens.
“We wanted to understand the dynamics of HPV vaccination, and why HPV vaccine rates are suboptimal, despite the vaccine being in the market for over 10 years now,” explained study author Kalyani Sonawane, an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Safety a main concern
Sonawane and her team concluded that 7.7 million US teens were not vaccinated against HPV in 2018.
The survey responses also revealed that more than half of the parents with unvaccinated teens had no intention of vaccinating them in the future.
“Among those who do not want to vaccinate against HPV, safety emerged as a main concern,” Sonawane said. “A lot of parents of these teenagers who had received zero doses said that the main reason they do not wish to vaccinate their child is because they have safety concerns about the vaccine.”
It is likely that the anti-vaccination movement is contributing to parent hesitancy about the HPV vaccine, according to the researchers.
They also compared the responses between different states, finding that states with the lowest rates of HPV vaccinations, such as Mississippi and Wyoming, also had high parental hesitancy rates.
Sonawane noted that these states could face a high burden of HPV-linked cancers in the future.
The HPV vaccine is a two-dose or three-dose series, depending on when a patient receives the first dose.
Partial HPV vaccination
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends two doses of the vaccine if the first dose is given before age 15, or three doses if the series is started between ages 16 and 26.
The second dose is recommended six months to a year after the first, and only the full series ensures protection.
The researchers estimated that 2.2 million teens in the United States have only received a partial HPV vaccination.
Of those teens who only received the first dose of the vaccine, one in four parents said they did not intend to complete the series.
Many of these parents said their teens didn’t get the second dose because their healthcare providers didn’t reach out to them, the researchers found.
“The main reason that emerged among these parents was that they never received a recommendation for their teen,” explained Sonawane. “A lot of times the patients or the provider fail to follow up with the teens and say, ‘Hey, you need the second dose or third dose to complete the HPV vaccine series and to have enough immunity to prevent HPV infection in the future.'”
Most parents do vaccinate kids
Previous research has shown that a provider recommendation is the most reliable way to ensure vaccination, but this study revealed that it might not be enough.
A full six of 10 parents with an unvaccinated teen who had received a recommendation from their provider said they still would not vaccinate. The most common reason was worries about the vaccine’s safety.
The findings were published recently in The Lancet Public Health journal.
Debbie Saslow, director of HPV and gynecologic cancer at the American Cancer Society, pointed out that the study only looked at those who aren’t vaccinated.
Despite the concerns this study raises, she emphasised that many American teens are now vaccinated against HPV.
Role of Facebook
“It’s also important to look at the counterpoint, which is that most parents do vaccinate their kids against HPV,” Saslow said.
Despite the findings that some parents wouldn’t vaccinate their teens even with a provider recommendation, Saslow said the primary approach in HPV vaccine advocacy is working with providers and health systems.
“If a parent says, ‘I read on Facebook that the vaccine has this side effect,’ then the provider has the opportunity to say, ‘Actually, that’s misinformation, and let me explain to you how safe this vaccine is,'” Saslow said. “The provider is most parents’ most trusted source of information, so that’s why we’ve really focused on that.”
Sonawane and her team also stressed the importance of training providers to remind their patients to get vaccinated, and to be prepared with clear answers to debunk any vaccine safety myths.
