JOHANNESBURG – Spider-Man: Homecoming (review) came swinging into first this weekend, but as an ultra-popular franchise, and the only big budget to debut, that was never going to be difficult for the superhero.
Parents beware! The latest Spiderman film contains a deadly drop of poison… pic.twitter.com/28gXWU3Rbg

Though Homecoming did not have the strongest global Spider-Man opening (that record is held by Spider-Man 3), it did pull in the biggest South African opener of the franchise.
It’s official… @TomHolland1996 is my favorite #SpiderMan .. I’ll continue to support u all the way.. wherever u are .. I’m so proud of you pic.twitter.com/RzkpnErlR0

Unfortunately for Wonder Woman (review), that means her time as the newest superhero has come to an end. The Patty Jenkins film has fallen two places down to six, making this its first week outside the top five. The film is still 2017’s top superhero movie, though, ahead of of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man.
But who else did Spider-Man catch in his web this weekend?
A hint: it isn’t buff topless men. In fact, Baywatch moved up one to fourth in its fifth week on the chart, despite working on the smallest budget of the top six.

Dwayne “the Rock”? More like Dwayne “the box… office champion”. I’ll see myself out.
Despicable Me 3 also had a great week. Though it fell one spot into second, the film managed to pick up the highest life-to-date gross with sales of R20 720 540 in just two weekends.

Its only competition in the way of kids films, Cars 3, dropped from third to fifth this week. The sequel is currently ranked third in the franchise and would have to pull a small miracle to overtake Cars 2.
Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell’s The House debuted in seventh spot this week. The film, which sees a married couple open an illegal casino to pay for their daughter’s tuition, only brought in half of its US$40-million budget globally. The comedy debuted just as Rough Night fell off the charts.

Finally, South African drama Nul is Nie Niks Nie (roughly translated to “Zero isn’t nothing”) opened in ninth spot, marking the first local entry in months. The Afrikaans flick is based on a novel by Jaco Jacobs and tells of three friends determined to make sick Drikus’ last wish, making a zombie film come true.

Cape Town – Despite falling 20 points behind Sebastian Vettel in the title race, Mercedes are adamant Lewis Hamilton is “still right” in the fight.
Hamilton finished fourth in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix unable to recover any further from a gearbox penalty that left him down in eighth place on the grid.
His main title rival Vettel was second on the day, only losing out to Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
As such the Brit now trails the Ferrari driver by 20 points.
Toto Wolff, though, insists he is not yet out of contention for the title.
“Lewis is still right in the fight,” said the Mercedes motorsport boss.
“It’s not even half time in the championship and there are 275 points still to be won.
“Our target will be to let him fight back in the best possible way in Silverstone.”
The Austrian conceded that Hamilton’s efforts had not been helped of late by Mercedes but believes the triple World Champ’s luck will change.
“In my opinion Lewis had all the bad luck that you can have,” Wolff told reporters.
“We’ve let him down with the headrest, we’ve let him down with the gearbox. Now it’s about time to fight back and hopefully that’s going to happen in Silverstone.
“It’s about time that this changes, the momentum goes in the other direction.”

Durban – An international crew of 30 fishermen were rescued from a burning Taiwanese vessel off the Durban coast on Tuesday, the SA Maritime Safety Authority has said.
Crew members from the Hsiang Fuh no.6 were rescued after the Maritime Rescue Co-ordinating Centre in Cape Town (MRCC CT) was notified that a container ship, the Ever Diadem, spotted the burning vessel about 10km from its position.
The crew had already abandoned ship on two life rafts about 736km east-north-east of Durban and 496km from the closest shore.
The vessel apparently caught fire on Sunday off the coast of Madagascar. The survivors were brought to Durban on Tuesday.
Samsa said after the MRCC CT requested the Ever Diadem to recover the survivors, an urgent mayday message was sent to other vessels to assist. Two bulk carriers, the Hampton Bay and the SBI Antares, came to their aid.
Sixteen crew members were picked up by the Ever Diadem while the other 14 were picked up by the SBI Antares. Some of the survivors had suffered slight burns. However, one of the men, a Filipino, had to be evacuated by helicopter after he suffered second and third-degree burns to 40% of his body.
A 63-year-old Chinese survivor was also treated for soft tissue injuries to his right knee.
Both were hoisted to the helicopter by the paramedics with the Filipino being in a stable but serious condition and the Chinese sailor in a stable condition.
Cape Town – A constable based at the Cape Town Central police station has been arrested for alleged robbery, which involved a safe inside a Mitchells Plain home, after the registration number of a police vehicle apparently used in the crime was traced.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed that the constable was arrested on Tuesday.
It is understood the constable is a member of the elite unit, the tactical response team, but Traut did not confirm this.
The constable faces a charge of house robbery for an incident that happened earlier on Tuesday in Tafelsig.
“It is alleged that four suspects threatened the complainant at his home and attempted to steal a container with contents, but it was left behind when they fled,” Traut said.
“The police vehicle’s registration number led to the arrest. Three suspects are still being sought.”
News24 understands four men wearing police uniforms targeted the Tafelsig home for a safe and cash.
It is understood a police vehicle was used in carrying out the crime.
