eNCA | Gauteng mortuary strike continues
JOHANNESBURG – The stand-off between Gauteng’s forensic pathology officers and the provincial health department continues.
Talks between Nehawu and the authorities are only set for Thursday.
Some families have obtained court orders, allowing them to collect the bodies of their loved ones.
Many forensic pathology workers have been on a go-slow for weeks now.
Nehawu claims its members aren’t on strike, but are merely doing the work they have been hired to do.
At the same time, the DA says the government is too soft on striking employees.
It’s urging authorities to obtain an urgent court order compelling them to return to work.

15 June 2017 – SARS intercepts 28.76kg rhino horns worth R6-million
Pretoria, Thursday 15 JUNE 2017 – SARS Customs officials intercepted yet another suspicious bag with 28.76kg rhino horns valued at almost R6-million at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday, Wednesday, 14 June.
This is the second rhino horn bust in less than four days after SARS Customs officials intercepted two bags with 10 rhino horns weighing 24.96kg estimated at R4.99-million at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday.
In yesterday’s incident, the discovery was made when Customs officials followed up on the suspicious bag on a plane bound for Hong Kong. The passenger was identified as the owner of the bag that was put through a scanner.
A physical inspection found the contents to be mould in the shape of 5 rhino horns concealed in 1 – 2 cm hard wax wrapped in paper.
The passenger and the goods have been handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.
In a separate incident, Customs officials intercepted consignments destined for Hong Kong with a selection of counterfeit designer label goods weighing 1220kg valued at R1 437 800 at a cargo shed at OR Tambo International Airport.
This included belts, jackets, shirts and sneakers.
The goods were handed over to South African Police Service for further handling.
SARS wishes to thank Customs staff for their focus, discipline and hard work. We are very proud of the dedicated commitment of SARS Customs staff in preventing illicit drugs and other goods from entering or leaving our country.
SARS will continue to work with all stakeholders at our Ports of Entry, including law enforcement agencies, to protect the economy by reducing illicit trade activities.
eNCA | SAA’s Myeni under fire
JOHANNESBURG – The Companies Tribunal will hear on Monday whether or not SAA board chair Dudu Myeni breached the Companies Act.
The matter is in connection with the plan to purchase planes from Airbus.
The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission made adverse findings against Myeni in 2016.
She was found guilty of contravening two sections of the Companies Act.
Myeni wants those findings declared invalid, citing that proper processes were not followed.
SAA has endured tough financial problems since Myeni began her tenure in 2012.
The airline recorded a loss of nearly a billion rand in the 2016/17 year.

News24.com | Train vandals must be treated like murderers, rapists and treasonists – union
Cape Town – People caught vandalising transport infrastructure deserve to spend the rest of their lives in jail, the United National Transport Union (Untu) has said.
This comes as vandalism caused delays on Metrorail’s Cape Town commuter lines on Monday morning.
“Untu has no choice but to demand from the legislature to impose life imprisonment for these crimes – similar to that imposed for offences of premeditated murder, gang rape, serial rape and treason,” said Steve Harris, Untu general secretary.
Untu said the serious damage to the economy and the risk to people’s lives that flows from continuing vandalism and theft warrants stricter sentencing, however felt magistrates seem loathed imposing the maximum sentence of 30 years that the Criminal Matters Amendment Act allows.
On Monday morning Metrorail in the Western Cape again reported delays of up to 50 minutes due to vandalism.
The transport company said last week it was already down 66 coaches since March 2016, which hampers its ability to provide its usual service.
“The result is that the situation has completely gotten out of hand. Our railway lines have become a war zone, but our criminal justice system simply turn a blind eye,” says Harris.

The latest incidents include:
– Railway tracks stolen on the line between Machadodorp and Carolina on Saturday causing a derailment;
– Two weeks ago, cable theft contributed to two Metrorail trains colliding near the Elandsfontein station in Gauteng. One commuter was killed and over 50 were injured;
– In March, sleepers were stolen from the tracks between Cullinan and Pretoria, leaving nearly 500 people stranded;
– Eight coaches were set alight at Cape Town station last Monday due to an electrical fault;
– Last Thursday a coach was set alight at Muldersvlei near Stellenbosch;
– Last Friday a coach was torched near Koeberg railway station.
News24.com | London: Muslims going to mosque urged to be vigilant
London – The chairperson of the Finsbury Park Mosque has urged Muslims going to mosques to be vigilant after a van ploughed into worshippers leaving prayers.
One person was killed and 10 injured in what Prime Minister Theresa May has described as a potential terrorist attack.
The driver of the van was arrested.
Mohammed Kozbar said the attack early on Monday morning was no different than the recent attacks on London Bridge and Manchester Arena and said the Muslim community is “in shock”.
Kozbar complained that the “mainstream media” was unwilling to call the attack a terrorist incident for many hours.
Video filmed in the immediate aftermath of the van striking worshippers showed a Caucasian man being detained by police.
Someone in the crowd yelled to others not to harm the man while he was taken into custody.
“No-one touch him! No-one, no-one!”
Sport24.co.za | Mallett lauds ‘outstanding’ Boks
Cape Town – Former national team coach Nick Mallett was impressed by the Springboks’ series-clinching win over France in Durban at the weekend.
The hosts’ comprehensive 37-15 win saw them take an unassailable 2-0 series lead heading into this Saturday’s final Test in Johannesburg.
“This was a really outstanding performance by the Boks against a team that was vastly strengthened. It was a French team that was very committed and came out to score a try early on,” Mallett said in the SuperSport studio afterwards.
“What impressed me tremendously was the work-rate of every one of the Boks close to the ball. When a tackle was made, the player got back to his feet and in position to help his mates. And if they were in a situation where they could turn the ball over, they did. In the first half, Jan Serfontein, Jean-Luc du Preez, Malcolm Marx, Frans Malherbe and Siya Kolisi all won penalties. That’s five penalties won by different players in one half and just shows how hard they are working for each other.”
Mallett also lauded the Springboks’ defensive effort, especially in the second half where there was a period that they held off 27 consecutive phases by the French on their own tryline.
“(sic) For 20 minutes in that second half when the French had 25 phases, it was quite extraordinary that they didn’t score. They kept on losing the brutal forward battle by going direct. Our defence was outstanding. The Springboks never lost the outside channel. We made 169 tackles to 58 by France and I reckon 100 of our tackles were made in those 20 minutes when we were defending on our own line. The Boks were good on defence and managed to scored four tries. It’s a good turnaround for this team. Things are looking up for the Boks.”
South Africa’s 37-14 win in the first Test in Pretoria saw them move from No 7 to No 5 in the World Rugby rankings and Mallett believes the team can quickly surge up to No 2.
“The backbone of this team has been the Lions players and we play in Johannesburg next weekend. I think it’s fantastic that Lions and Bok captain Warren Whiteley can take his team to his home ground in search of a 3-0 series win. Imagine the confidence we’ll then take into the Rugby Championship. I mean, Scotland are fifth in the rankings at the moment and with these sort of performances we can very quickly get back to No 2 in the world.”
