News24.com | Zuma threatens ANC NEC not to ‘push him too far’
Johannesburg – A furious President Jacob Zuma has threatened his detractors in the ANC not to “push him too far”.
Zuma addressed the party’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Pretoria after surviving another motion for him to step down. The party’s highest decision-making body between conferences debated the motion for two days, with the meeting ending late on Sunday evening.
“He was very angry. It was the first time I have seen him so angry,” said an NEC source.
The source added that Zuma threatened ANC leaders in his closing address to stop criticising him in public as he will no longer continue to keep quiet.
“I have been quiet because I don’t want to harm the ANC, so continue attacking me in the media and you will see,” Zuma is quoted saying to the ANC NEC.

The president further warned the NEC that it should be the last time he faced a motion of no confidence.
Zuma told the meeting he didn’t understand calls for him to step down now as he was not standing for re-election at the party’s elective conference in December.
Zuma is also said to have slammed the Gauteng ANC for blaming him for the party’s electoral decline, reminding the province that it had refused to distribute T-shirts bearing his name for the 2016 local government electoral campaign.
He further blamed the party for losing the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality due to infighting that has plagued the ANC in the metro.
Zuma also referred to an alleged plot to poison him in 2014, saying he knew who was behind the plot but did not want to harm the ANC.
Second call to step down
The NEC debated Zuma’s political future after ANC policy guru Joel Netshitenzhe put forward the motion – the second motion in six months for Zuma to vacate his office.
Two NEC members confirmed to News24 that Zuma had survived.
A source who attended the meeting told News24 that as many as 70 NEC members speakers spoke for and against the motion.
A Zuma supporter claimed that Zuma had the support of most speakers despite earlier confidence expressed by the faction opposing Zuma’s leadership that their NEC support had grown.
Unconfirmed reports were that at least 18 NEC members, including Cabinet ministers, supported Netshitenzhe’s motion, but that considerably more ANC leaders spoke against the motion for Zuma to step down.
Zuma supporters said it was easier to “crush” the motion this time than in November when former tourism minister Derek Hanekom unexpectedly tabled a motion for Zuma to go.

News24.com | Woman arrested for stolen goods after tracker leads to her door
Johannesburg – A Bramley woman will appear in court on Monday after some of the spoils of a hijacked truck were tracked to her home on Sunday, Johannesburg police said.
Captain Kay Makhubela said that a truckload of household appliances was noted to have gone off-route according to the tracking device it was fitted with, sparking a call to police early on Sunday morning.
The tracking company helped trace some of the goods, which included microwave ovens, TVs and fridges at the home of a Bramley woman, and the rest which was packed into a closed shop in Kempton Park with its windows papered over.
The truck, which was en-route to several retailers in Namibia, was found abandoned near a taxi rank in Kempton Park.
The truck driver is still missing.
The woman is expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.
Sport24.co.za | S18: SA quarter-finals nailed down
Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer
Cape Town – Same old, same old … South Africa will have exactly the same pair of home quarter-finalists and the identical away side, too, in Super Rugby 2017.
In a reflection of the shortcomings of the multi-conference system, it is already confirmed now — even as we enter the traditional June recess during ordinary season – that the Lions and Stormers will host last-eight dates at Emirates Airline Park and Newlands respectively, and the Sharks again have to tackle theirs away.
All that is outstanding is to establish who their various opponents will be.
The situation, sealed this weekend, is a carbon copy of 2016, when the Lions beat the Crusaders in Johannesburg in that phase before moving further onward to a losing final in Wellington, the Stormers were quickly, unceremoniously bundled out by the Chiefs in a nasty 21-60 outcome, and the Sharks similarly trounced by eventual champions the Hurricanes in awful conditions at the Cake Tin.
Again the Stormers, albeit notably hot and cold, are guaranteed to top Africa Conference 1, whilst the Lions will be clear-cut winners of Africa 2, and domestic group rivals the Sharks will bag the extra, more difficult away quarter-final ticket on offer to third best-performing “African” side from either of those two pools.
Following their well-deserved victory over the Stormers in a slightly hollow-feel derby in damp Durban on Saturday, Robert du Preez’s charges now cannot end anywhere but second in Africa 2, even with two pre-knockout matches left.
Nor can any second place-finishing team from the especially unconvincing Africa 1 outdo them from here for log points — not by a long way.
The Lions, courtesy of their latest vibrant triumph on Sunday, where the Kings were outclassed 54-10 despite the hosts playing most of the match with 14 men, finally put beyond any doubt table-topping status in their group.
They have 56 points from 13 matches, an unassailable gap of 14 points over the Sharks (42) with two games each to go (including against each other at Kings Park in the last round on July 15).
But that didn’t mean the Sharks’ yeoman efforts, especially through their rugged and well-organised defence, against the Stormers went entirely unrewarded: their win, coupled with the fast-fading Jaguares’ heavy home setback to the Brumbies a few hours later, meant the Argentineans (24 points, three games to play) can only get to a maximum of 39 points and are goners as far as the playoffs are concerned.
In spite of failing to even bank a losing bonus point in Durban, the Stormers (30 points from 12 games) are safe too, as Africa 1 winners.
The currently second-placed Cheetahs have only 16 points with two obligations remaining, although the Bulls in third (well beaten at home again by the Hurricanes on Saturday) have 15 with three fixtures in hand.
That means they could yet move – albeit massively unlikely – to 30 points, and end level with the Capetonians if Robbie Fleck’s charges (also hugely improbable) earn no log points at all in closing matches against the Cheetahs (away), Sunwolves (home) and Bulls themselves (away).
But the Stormers are home and dry anyway: tournament rules dictate that if teams end level on points, the first criterion for separating them is most wins.
The Stormers have banked seven victories and the Bulls three, so the latter side would only get to six even if they end their season with a flourish.
It is a disappointing, anticlimactic way for ordinary season to come to a close, at least as far as the South African-specific hostilities are concerned.
But there is still, of course, the far from irrelevant matter of seeing whether the buzzing Lions can finish ahead of all other teams in the competition, teeing up the great chance of a final in the Big Smoke.
They still cannot quite catch up to the remorseless, all-conquering Crusaders, who stay three points ahead of them.
But with two games left each, the Lions’ look the better shoes to be in when it comes to victory chances: their closing dates are against the Sunwolves at home and Sharks away, whereas the ‘Saders have NZ derby stinkers against the Highlanders (home) and Hurricanes (away).
Just one slip-up from the Crusaders and the Lions may well be ready to pounce into top spot.
*There are no further matches now involving South African sides until the weekend beginning June 30.
Next weekend’s fixtures (home teams first, all kick-offs SA time):
Friday: Blues v Reds, 09:35. Saturday: Crusaders v Highlanders, 04:35; Chiefs v Waratahs, 07:05; Brumbies v Rebels, 11:45; Force v Hurricanes, 13:55.

eNCA | More Heathrow chaos as BA scrambles
LONDON – Thousands of travellers faced further chaos on Sunday as British Airways cancelled around 60 flights from London’s Heathrow Airport following an IT system failure.
Around one-quarter of Sunday’s flights set to depart from London’s major hub before 4.00 pm were cancelled as the airline battled to contain the “knock-on disruption” to schedules, with aircraft and crews out of position around the world.
British Airways said it was hoping to operate a near-normal schedule of flights from Gatwick, London’s other major airport, and the majority of its Heathrow services.
More flights left Heathrow as the day wore on, but most were operating with delays. Travellers also faced hold-ups at Gatwick, but no flights were cancelled.

BA cancelled all its flights out of the two airports on Saturday after the IT failure, which shut down all of the carrier’s check-in and operational systems and affected call centres and its website.
However, it did not appear to be a cyber-attack, according to chairman and chief executive Alex Cruz, who said the root cause appeared to be a “power supply issue”.
Britain is still recovering from a ransomware attack that crippled crucial infrastructure earlier this month, including computer systems at the National Health Service.
‘Horrible time’
BA’s outage came on a busy weekend in Britain, where Monday is a public holiday and many schoolchildren are beginning a week’s holiday.
“This has been a horrible time for customers, some of you have missed holidays, some of you have been stranded on aircraft and some of you have been separated from your bags. Many of you have been stuck in long queues while you waited for information,” Cruz said in a video statement on Sunday.

The airline advised passengers not to come to the two airports unless they had confirmed bookings, with disruption expected throughout the holiday weekend.
Cruz warned that Heathrow terminals were still “very congested” and told passengers not to arrive too early, as they may only be admitted 90 minutes before their departure.
The carrier said those unable to fly would be offered a full refund.
An AFP photographer at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 on Saturday said many travellers were waiting outside the departure area with their luggage in “chaotic” scenes.

‘Ruined honeymoon’
Tearful passenger Melanie Ware flew from Los Angeles to Heathrow for a connecting flight to Venice on Saturday for her honeymoon.
She said that flight was cancelled, and another flight she rebooked for Sunday was also cancelled, while there was no sign or news of the couple’s luggage.
“British Airways has ruined our honeymoon,” she told Sky News. “They’re not helping us at all.”
Passengers were asked to contact the airline in order to locate their luggage after many were forced to leave Heathrow without claiming their bags.
The carrier said it was “extremely sorry” for causing inconvenience over the holiday period.
British Airways has suffered other IT glitches recently, leading to severe delays for passengers in July and September last year.
IAG, the parent group of British Airways and Spanish carrier Iberia, earlier this month reported a 74-percent slump in first-quarter net profit to 27 million euros ($30 million), due in large part to a weak pound.

We are tired of excuses‚ says Kolisi
Craig Ray | 2017-05-28 16:53:19.0
Stormers’ captain Siya Kolisi (L) and teammate Dewaldt Duvenage celebrate the try during the Super Rugby match against Blues at DHL Newlands on May 19, 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Stormers are all but in the Super Rugby play-offs despite slumping to a fifth defeat of the season against the Sharks at King’s Park on Saturday‚ but captain Siya Kolisi is tired of excuses.
Despite the 22-10 loss against the Sharks‚ the Stormers still hold a 14 and 15-point cushion over the Cheetahs and Bulls respectively at the top the Africa 1 conference.
On 30 log points‚ the Stormers are all but into the post-season thanks to the vagaries of a tournament structure that rewards mediocrity.
The Cheetahs only have two matches remaining and cannot catch the Stormers while the Bulls could on theory join the Stormers on 30 log points‚ but have a woeful -124 points’ difference. For the Stormers though‚ it’s been a frustrating campaign laced with potential but ultimately marred by failing in big games‚ barring a couple of exceptions.
Beating the Chiefs and Blues at home were the high points of a campaign that has also seen record losses against the Crusaders (57-24) and Highlanders (57-14).
Over the course of the season‚ the excuse of‚ ‘we’re a young group‚ still learning‚’ has been repeated numerous times by coach Robbie Fleck and Kolisi himself. After losing to the Sharks despite dominating the second half and creating enough chances to score‚ Kolisi jettisoned the ‘learning’ excuse. “We were good last week‚ but this week we weren’t‚” Kolisi said.
“They made the most of their opportunities and we didn’t‚ which has been a problem for us all season. “In all the games we have lost‚ the same problems have reoccurred. We have given up possession through poor decision-making or execution when on attack.
“We can’t make the same mistakes over and over and keep on saying that we’re learning. We have to make it right and start actually taking those opportunities.
“Saying ‘we’re learning’ is not enough anymore.” Fleck mirrored those comments in his assessment of the Sharks match. ““We created opportunities out there but we didn’t execute well. We’re not proud of the performance at all‚” Fleck said.
“But we were pretty stupid on their line and made a lot of bad decisions and took wrong options. They did defend well‚ but after we spread them we took poor options.”
