News24.com | 5 lions escape from Kruger
Johannesburg – Five lions have reportedly escaped from the Kruger National Park and are on the loose in Mpumalanga.
The Mpumalanga police confirmed the incident to Netwerk24.
They apparently escaped on Monday morning and are somewhere close to the N4 in the Mananga area close to the border with Swaziland.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said that rangers are in the area looking for the escaped predators.
Hlathi said the lions were last spotted at around 21:40 under a bridge at the N4.
He warned motorists and pedestrians to be on the lookout and said the lions already tried to catch cattle near the highway on Monday evening, Netwerk24 reported.

MPUMALANGA – Five lions on the loose in Mpumalanga, it’s not clear how they got loose.
SAPS Spokesperson Leonard Hlathi said the police could not at the moment give information as to how the lions escaped.
He did, however, warn community members to be on the look out for the predators along the Mananga road, near the Mozambican border, Lebombo.
Hlathi confirms that the lions have not been caught.
“Community members need to be on the lookout, the lions have not been caught and that poses danger because that road is frequented by people, who are walking. Even people who are driving might want to park their cars to answer the call of nature, that poses a serious danger to them”.

The Spokesperson urges the community not to walk or park anywhere near the area for their own safety.
Hlathi told eNCA that the lions were seen around a low bridge area near Mananga.
The SAPS and Kruger National Park rangers are currently searching for the lions.

News24.com | Dad accused of murder after shooting dead robber
Mahikeng – A father of two from Leeudoringstad in North West wounded a robber and shot dead his accomplice in a fight on Friday night when a gang of robbers attacked his home.
Chris Holtzhausen, 44, is now being accused of attempted murder and murder, Netwerk24 reports.
“It was a fight to survive. I knew that if I succumbed, they would kill me and rape my wife and children…I just had to protect them.”
Holtzhausen was severely assaulted and even lost two of his toenails. His wife Elize was assaulted with a crowbar. Both have to take antiretroviral medicine after undergoing HIV/Aids tests.
Demanded money
“My eldest daughter, 9, is a heroine. When she heard the first shot, she grabbed her three-year-old sister, rolled them both in a blanket and hid under the bed”.
Holtzhausen’s mother Bets, 68, was buried on Friday after suffering a heart attack. Some of her family members, Hennie Bear, 71 and his wife Vicky, 78, spent the night at the Holtzhausens after the funeral.
Holtzhausen said: “We woke up when our Yorkshire terrier, which slept on the bed, started growling. The robbers were, however, already inside the house.”
Holtzhausen later saw that the palisade fence surrounding the house had been twisted open and a sliding door had been lifted off its track.
The robbers wore balaclavas and hit Holtzhausen on his right arm with a crowbar. They demanded money.
“We told them that there wasn’t any money in the house.”
The noise woke Bear and the robbers also assaulted him.
Ransacked house
Holtzhausen said: “Both my knees and my feet sustained blows. Two of my toenails had to be removed.”
Elize has injuries to her left arm, knees, buttocks and thighs. She pulled the balaclava off one of the robbers who told Elize in Afrikaans: “Leave him…I’m going to use a knife to cut you.”
Bear was fighting for his life with some of the robbers while one pressed a pistol to his head.
While Elize, Bear and Vicky were being assaulted, some of the robbers ransacked the house. Some of Vicky’s fingers were broken when she tried to fight back.
In the confusion Holtzhausen managed to fetch his pistol from a safe and fired two shots in the lounge.
“I can’t describe how terrible it was, but I had to pull the trigger in self-defence.”
Four other robbers fled and the police found a backpack containing stolen cellphones, wallets, iPads and the watches of the two children.
Holtzhausen says his eldest daughter has been severely traumatised and she is refusing to return home.
“We were still traumatised following my mother’s death and on top of that we had to be burgled as well.”
The family members are going to receive counselling.
The North West police are searching for four robbers who fled and are investigating a case of armed house robbery.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said it was standard procedure to open a case of murder or attempted murder after someone dies or is injured in a shooting. He said as soon as the investigation is completed, the dossier would be handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority to decide whether anyone would be prosecuted in connection with the shooting.
Sport24.co.za | Refreshed Brumbies target Lions scalp
Cape Town – Brumbies second-row Blake Enever has praised head coach Stephen Larkham’s decision to give the team time off ahead of facing the Lions.
The franchise from Canberra were on a bye last weekend and were allowed a spell away from the training ground to keep them fresh mentally.
That call has been applauded by lock Enever.
“A few of the boys were able to get away for a couple of days,” he told the Brumbies website.
“We trained last Tuesday and then we were told to get away from it. We had a good day on Sunday as well coming back. It’s important to get your head away from rugby, it freshens you up and makes you even more keen to get on with the job when you come back.”
Friday’s fixture at home against the Lions is crucial for the Brumbies as they enter on the back of a three-game losing streak.
However, they do still remain top of the Australian Conference and Enever is targeting a physical performance against the South African pace-setters.
“You have to match them with aggression, they’re a big, big team that love running the ball so we have to get up in defence and try to slow them down,” he said.
“They’ve got good backs and forwards that play exciting rugby. We’ve had that bye so hopefully we can put on a good performance.
“They’ve shown that they can score tries but I think we’re pretty structurally good in defence. We just have to keep backing ourselves and try and cut off their options.”
EPG report set to overturn ban on rugby
The lifting of the sanction will allow national government to formally back SA Rugby’s bid to host Rugby World Cup 2023‚ after months of the speculation.
SA Rugby fell foul of two of 13 barometers set out by the EPG in the period 2014/15 when their original assessment was done.
It was a situation SA Rugby publicly took on the chin‚ but privately challenged with then sports minister Fikile Mbalula and member of the EPG Dr Willie Basson.
Regardless‚ Mbalula suspended SA Rugby’s right to host mega-events last April‚ at precisely the time the body was bidding to host RWC 2023.
Sources have confirmed to TMG that SA Rugby has met all targets laid out by the EPG and will have the suspension lifted.
Basson himself hinted strongly that SA Rugby “would receive good news” when questioned about the EPG’s updated findings.
Key indicators that SA Rugby had to meet was the number of black players and coaches at national level. That target has been reached.
In the months that followed the original ban SA Rugby continued with its bid application‚ meeting all World Rugby’s deadlines.
Until the EPG’s latest report is made public‚ and confirms that SA Rugby has met all 13 barometers‚ which will happen on Tuesday‚ new sports minister Thulas Nxesi won’t confirm the bid’s support from national government.
But he did say that the legacy of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup had been positive for South Africa and that hosting another RWC would be beneficial.
“If I were to draw on my experiences from the Soccer World Cup in 2010‚ in terms of nation building‚ we saw both black and white in the stands supporting Bafana Bafana and enjoying the football‚” Nxesi said.
“The legacy of that tournament‚ amongst black and white‚ is very important. A big part of that legacy is the stadia that were built‚ which means that we have the necessary infrastructure in place already and we don’t have to start from scratch.
“It means the hosting costs would be seriously reduced and I believe that the hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2023 can also leave a huge legacy and make a big impact‚ just like soccer did (in 2010).”
SA Rugby president Mark Alexander was optimistic that the EPG’s report contained good news for rugby.
“I’m positive about what will come with the EPG report review because we are on track‚” Alexander said.
“We measure our progress and it will be announced soon.
“The government allowed us to run for RWC 2023 pending us receiving a pass mark from the EPG. We have a formidable bid that will deliver similar ticket sales numbers to England 2015.
“We have great stadiums‚ that are all-seaters‚ and we stand a good chance of winning this bid. It’s long overdue and would be good for South Africa.”
