Assist Circuit Managers to Follow Underperforming Schools
Day three of Data Driven Districts Dashboard is underway at the Education Leadership Institute in East London, where all Circuit Managers are fully hands on, on the navigation of the actual system.
With whispers, chattering, some confusion but overall excitement, circuit managers are learning how to use all the tools on the Dashboard. Primarily, the Dashboard gives circuit summaries of key areas at schools e.g. Learner Attendance, Educator Attendance, Task Coverage, Promotion of Grade R-11 learners, Matric pass rate and Report marks pass rate.
The Dashboard is a great intervention facility that will enable circuit managers to follow up on schools that are underperforming in any of the key areas and what the linkages are e.g. Educators attendance has a direct impact on task coverage etc. This is also a tool that can be used to acknowledge schools that are performing well. The Dashboard is a wealth of knowledge that will be hugely beneficial to the Eastern Cape if used correctly.
Derrick Nyati, a circuit manager from OR Thambo Coastal, former Libode District, which takes care of 30 schools says’ “Scarcity of Maths and Science teachers in my circuit is a challenge, and in most cases, we are using foreign nationals, so it will be very interesting to see how this will affect our results in my circuit through the Dashboard.” Nyati continued by saying, “The DDD Dashboard training is informative and will give us more knowledge about the schools we take care of.”
All circuit managers are well on their way to fully understanding the dashboard, however it will take a good few practices before being experts, however, if any circuit managers are having difficulties navigating the system, short videos will be uploaded on ECDoE Facebook page for your convenience.
PB Banana "Nice" Cream With Strawbery Sacue
Bryan Gardner; Food Styling: Anna Hampton, Prop Styling: Mindi Shapiro
Ingredients
- 6 medium-size ripe bananas (about 2 1/4 lb.)
- 1 1/2 pounds fresh strawberries, trimmed
- 2 tablespoons coconut sugar
- 1 tablespoon brown rice syrup
- 3/8 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/3 cup canned coconut milk
- 3 tablespoons creamy natural peanut butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons finely chopped roasted peanuts
Preparation
1. Peel bananas and cut into 3/4-inch-thick slices. Place in a single layer on a baking sheet; freeze until solid, 2 to 3 hours.
2. Finely chop 1/2 pound of the strawberries. Combine chopped strawberries, sugar, syrup, and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until strawberries become syrupy, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand for 10 minutes. Coarsely chop remaining 1 pound strawberries. Stir into cooked strawberry mixture.
3. Process coconut milk, frozen bananas, peanut butter, vanilla, and remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt in a high-powered blender or food processor on high until very creamy, stopping to scrape down sides and press bananas into blade as necessary. Serve banana mixture immediately for a soft-serve consistency, or store in an airtight container in freezer for a firmer texture. Serve with strawberry sauce and chopped peanuts.

News24.com | Assault cases opened following Pollsmoor violence
Cape Town – Assault cases have been opened following attacks on five warders at Pollsmoor prison over the long weekend, correctional services said on Wednesday.
Prison visits, which had been suspended following the violence, were reinstated as the situation was “back to normal,” spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said.
Four warders were assaulted when they tried to stop an inmate from assaulting another with a padlock in a communal cell in the prison’s medium B section on Sunday. A fifth warder was attacked with a broomstick in the medium A section on Monday.
The prisoner with the padlock sustained minor injuries. He was treated in the prison’s hospital and discharged on the same day. All five injured warders opened separate assault cases with police.
Western Cape correctional services commissioner, Delekile Klaas, ordered an investigation into the matter.
News24.com | KZN treasury probing R6.9bn fraud
Pietermaritzburg – KwaZulu-Natal’s treasury is investigating fraud and corruption amounting to R6.9bn, finance MEC Belinda Scott told a sitting of the legislature on Wednesday.
The treasury’s forensic investigation unit and Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) were probing the alleged crimes, which date from 2009, she said while tabling treasury’s budget.
“Most of the allegations received and investigated are serious and complex in nature. The forensic investigation unit will continue to work hand-in-hand with the law enforcement agencies,” she told MPLs.
She said a number of departments had made arrests and taken disciplinary action against employees suspected of wrongdoing. She cited the recent AFU preservation order for R546m granted against a former transport department official as an example of efforts to stop corruption.
She conceded that a bleak economic outlook, exacerbated by the recent downgrading of South Africa’s debt to junk status posed big problems. Treasury would continue applying austerity measures.
“The cost-cutting measures remain in place as we still cannot afford lavish events and expenditure items that are not directed at service delivery for our people.”
She urged senior officials, especially accounting officers, to play their part in saving public funds.
Part of the R607.8m budget would go towards helping municipalities manage their finances, monitoring infrastructure spending in departments, and helping departments achieve clean audits.
Sport24.co.za | Bulls have a plan for unbeaten Crusaders
Pretoria – Bulls coach Nollis Marais believes that “accuracy” will be crucial in his side’s efforts to derail the unbeaten Crusaders in their Super Rugby clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
The Bulls endured a woeful start to the 2017 tournament, losing five of their first six fixtures.
But wins against the Jaguares and the Cheetahs at home in their last two fixtures have calmed the storm somewhat and eased the pressure on Marais.
Marais has been vocal this season on his intention to turn the Bulls into a side that plays ball-in-hand rugby.
But the wins over the Jaguares and Cheetahs resembled more the Bulls side of old that relied on a strong defence and an ability to grind out wins.
The word from the Bulls camp on Wednesday was that an ‘attack at all costs’ mentality would be a bad idea.
“You can’t run it from everywhere. You have to be tactically very good against them,” Marais said of the Crusaders.
“We’ve got certain plans in place that we think tactically will suit us. If you run the ball from anywhere and you’re not accurate, and you lose the ball in your own 22, they will punish you very quickly. We know exactly what we want to do.”
Marais knows that the Bulls will have to put in a serious performance if they are to do what no other side has done this season and emerge with a victory against the seven-time Super Rugby champions.
“If you want to beat them, you’ll have to be up for it,” he said.
“It helps with motivation if you play against the No 1 side. We’ve got a few guys who have never played New Zealand sides before and if we want to beat them on Saturday we will have to be at our best.”
Skipper Adriaan Strauss said the mood in the Bulls camp ahead of this match was special.
“I feel this is the most excited the team has been this whole season,” he said.
“We really feel that it’s a big game and we know we’re up against a team that’s unbeaten. We respect them as a team and a franchise, but we’re looking forward to it.
“They’ve always got great individuals but also the reputation … it’s one of the biggest teams or the biggest to play against so that makes it massive. It gives the guys a chance to measure themselves against the best.”
The match kicks off at 17:15.

eNCA | Three killed in Massachusetts car auction crash
MASSACHUSETTS – Three people were killed and 10 hurt on Wednesday when a car being readied for sale was accidentally driven through a crowded auto auction in Billerica, Massachusetts, a prosecutor said.
An employee of Lynnway Auto Auction was moving a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee inside a warehouse when it barreled into a crowd of bidders shortly after 10am, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.
Television aerial footage showed that the Jeep smashed through the concrete wall of the warehouse, where several hundred people had gathered for a weekly auction.

“The preliminary information that we have right now is that it was a tragic accident,” Ryan told a news conference.
She said the driver was a man in his 70s, but declined to comment on media reports that he may have mistaken the brake and accelerator pedals.
A man and two women were killed, and 10 people were taken to hospitals, Ryan said. Two people had life-threatening injuries and eight were seriously hurt, she said.
Woody Tuttle, an auto auction employee, told ABC affiliate WCVB-TV that people were standing between lanes of cars when the Jeep raced through the auction building, which is the length of a football field.
“I heard a screeching of tires, and, I believe, a Jeep Cherokee went flying by me. In avoiding the cars, whoever was driving this vehicle hit several people,” Tuttle said.
Lynnway’s website bills the company as the largest auto auction in New England. A company Facebook posting just before the crash showed a photo of vehicles and said that cars were “lined up and ready for a beautiful Wednesday morning.”
The Massachusetts State Police said in a statement, “There is no evidence or information to suggest the incident was caused by an intentional or terrorist act.”

eNCA | Coligny accused’s bail application postponed
COLIGNY – The bail application of the men accused of killing a teenager in Coligny in the North West has been postponed to Friday.
On Wednesday, Pieter Doorewaard and Phillip Schutte stuck to their story that Mothlomola Mosweu jumped out of a moving van while they were transporting him to hospital.
They claim they caught the 16-year-old stealing a sunflower at a local farm.
But the state’s main witness disputes their version, saying the pair assaulted the deceased.
Mosweu’s post-mortem report is still being finalised and has not yet been handed to the court.
