Baxter allegedly tells Safa he will accept Bafana job on condition his son becomes national team goalkeeper coach
Insiders close to the negotiations told Times Media Digital that the Briton has agreed personal terms of a salary believed to be in the region of R1 million a month for his second stint with the senior national team.
But his acceptance of the job is believed to be on condition that his son‚ Lee‚ becomes the national team goalkeeper coach.
The insiders also revealed that South African Football Association (Safa) officials were initially reluctant to accede to Baxter’s demand of working with his son for fear of public condemnation.
But it seems they have given in to the stipulation as Baxter is set to be announced as new Bafana coach this week.
Safa have struggled to pin down a coach since the beginning of the year and attempts to secure Mozambique-born Carlos Queiroz‚ Frenchman Hervé Renard and Belgian Hugo Broos all failed.
The failure to find a replacement four months after Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba’s sacking has put Safa under tremendous pressure from the public and this has seemingly swung the pendulum in Baxter’s favour.
Safa’s reluctance is believed to stem from the fact that Lee Baxter does not have a proven track record of working at national team level where the stakes are a lot higher.
Goalkeeper coaching is a highly specialised field and Safa’s worry was based on the kind of impact he could have on the experienced keepers in the national team‚ especially Bafana No1 Itumeleng Khune and Darren Keet.
Baxter junior spent time at SuperSport United as goalkeeper coach last season and he also worked with his father in the same capacity at AIK in Sweden and at Genclerbirligi in Turkey.
SuperSport United fitness trainer Joshua Smith will also join the national team.
The Briton arrived with Smith at the club in the beginning of last year when he took over the coaching reins from Gordon Igesund.
The new Bafana Bafana coach is expected to be announced on Monday or Tuesday.
Safa’s communications head Dominic Chimhavi did not respond to text messages requesting comment on the matter on Sunday.
Baxter’s agent Steve Kapulschnik was also not available for comment on Sunday. – TMG Digital/TMG Sport
Sport24.co.za | Afrika still excited by Blitzboks experience
Cape Town – He has travelled the globe, scored more than 1200 career points and won tournaments with the Springbok Sevens team all over the world, but getting on the plane with the team for yet another possible title, still excites Cecil Afrika tremendously.
The 29-year old playmaker will reach a milestone in Hong Kong next weekend as he plays in his 50th HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournament – something he admits, he thought would never happen after a serious knee injury picked up at the same venue four years ago.
“A couple of years back I picked up a bad injury in Hong Kong,” Afrika said before the Blitzboks departed to Hong Kong via Johannesburg for the seventh tournament of the 2017 World Series.
“Such was the extent of the injury I was told that I would be lucky to get another year out of rugby. Luckily it turned out that the injury was not that bad, and here I am going back to the same venue to play in my 50th tournament. In a way, it is a bittersweet feeling because I thought my career was over when I got injured there, and now I will reach a tournament milestone at the same venue,” he smiled.
Only Frankie Horne (68), Chris Dry (58), Kyle Brown (57) and Branco du Preez (51) have achieved this feat.
Afrika, the World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year in 2011, is again in great form and keen to help the team win the HSBC Cathay Pacific Hong Kong title, something they have not achieved since the start of the World Series way back in 1999.
“We can only go out and do our best. We had some good results at other venues, but this one keeps eluding us. We will be keen to change that,” Afrika said.
Of making his 50th tournament appearance at this iconic venue, he said. “Ideally, I would have loved to play my 50th in Port Elizabeth in front of my home crowd, but it does not always work like that. Hong Kong’s atmosphere is amazing, so I will enjoy the fact that I have achieved something special in a venue like that,” said Afrika.
Every time Afrika scores a try or kicks a conversion, he extends his South African career points’ scoring record. “I don’t keep adding those up when I play. I am pretty pleased every time I score points for the team, as it means we have done something right and I have contributed. That is what it is about, not my records,” he said.
Afrika (hamstring) is one of a number of players who was in doubt to make it to Hong Kong, as injuries piled up following the tournaments in Las Vegas and Vancouver last month. Ruhan Nel (ankle), Chris Dry (knee) and Branco du Preez (pectoral muscle) were all cleared to travel on Friday, something Springbok Sevens coach, Neil Powell, admits was not ideal.
“We did not prepare the way we wanted to, as we had to look after some injured players as well as try to improve on our general play. I am still pretty confident in the ability of the squad though, and I think we can give a good account of ourselves, despite the fact that our preparation was not as smooth as usual. This tournament will also provide a solid opportunity for some of the younger guys in the squad and I am keen to see how they progress,” Powell said.
The Springbok Sevens team will face France on Friday and Kenya and Japan on Saturday respectively in the pool stages of the competition.
News24.com | Court rules in Cape Town’s favour in stadium collusion case
Cape Town – A court has handed down judgment in favour of the City of Cape Town, in its case against construction companies that colluded in the building of Cape Town Stadium, mayor Patricia de Lille said on Sunday.
She said the judgment by the North Gauteng High Court on Friday related to an objection by WBHO that the city could not rely on admissions made by other construction companies to prove its claim against WBHO.
The court dismissed its objection and ordered it to pay the city’s legal costs.
De Lille said this paved the way for the city to recover more than R500m in damages from the construction companies.
She did not agree with the settlement agreements that were made in respect of the collusion.
“We have said before that this ‘Tirisano Trust’ is a slush fund set up by national government for the private sector. Instead of compensating municipalities and ratepayers for the R 112bn loss that they incurred, this R 1.5bn trust has been set up to help the private sector diversify instead of bringing justice to the residents of those municipalities.”
She said this was why the city decided to pursue the matter independently instead of relying on national government for proper recourse.
News24.com | Outspoken ANC top 6 members ‘ill disciplined’ – Mpumalanga chair Mabuza
Mpumalanga – Members of the ANC’s top 6 who have spoken out against the cabinet reshuffle are “ill disciplined”, Mpumalanga ANC chairperson, David Mabuza, said on Sunday.
He was referring to President Jacob Zuma’s dramatic cabinet reshuffle which included the firing of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
Zuma’s decision has been met with outrage, with some members of the party’s top 6 openly admitting that there was no agreement over the firing of some ministers.
The ANC secretary general, Gwede Mantashe, said the president’s list of new appointments seem to have come from “elsewhere”.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa called Zuma’s decision “totally unacceptable”, while ANC treasurer general, Zweli Mkhize, said the briefing by Zuma left an impression that “the party was no longer at the centre”.
Mabuza, addressing journalists in Bushbuck Ridge on Sunday after welcoming former ANC members back in the party, said Mhize and Ramaphosa, “must remember they are not the president. There is only one president.
“I don’t know if they want to exercise the same powers that the president has. It is quite ill disciplined that people will go out and say they differ with the president. That is ill disciplined,” said Mabuza.
He said, “To hire people, to hire ministers is the prerogative of the president. To hire MECs is my prerogative as premier”.
Zuma, said Mabuza, could decide to outsource that prerogative and “give it to other people to assist him in making a decision on who to appoint”.
“To me the deployment of people is not the most important thing in the ANC because we don’t own these positions. I was not born to be a premier. You can remove me tomorrow and to be honest I won’t have a problem,” he said.
Mabuza said he didn’t want to read a lot into what the president has done, “exercising his prerogative”.
He said the president had the responsibility to run the country and that he could not fail the people of the country.
“You can’t hang your dirty linen out there. What are you trying to do, whom are you trying to appease?” asked Mabuza.
“We are working very hard on the ground to unite the ANC but they are doing their best to divide it,” he said.
eNCA | Arsenal fight back twice to draw with City
LONDON – Arsenal earned beleaguered manager Arsene Wenger a measure of respite by twice hitting back to hold Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Pep Guardiola twice saw his City side go ahead, through Leroy Sane and then Sergio Aguero, but Arsenal twice responded with goals from Theo Walcott and Shkodran Mustafi.

Victory would have been a welcome tonic for Wenger, who has come in for heavy criticism from Arsenal’s fans, but after four defeats in five Premier League games, the point was welcome.
His side remain seven points below City, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League berth, in sixth place, but they retain a game in hand on them.
City were prevented from reclaiming third place from Liverpool and eating into Chelsea’s advantage following the leaders’ shock 2-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace.
But City, who have now drawn their last three league games, will have an opportunity to close to within eight points of the summit when they travel to Chelsea on Wednesday.
Wenger again faced protests from some Arsenal fans, this time in the form of an advertising van parked outside the ground and leaflets about the launch of a #NoNewContract social media campaign.

City’s team featured the novelty of Jesus Navas at right-back, but there was nothing new about the huge boulevards of space they found between the members of Arsenal’s back four.
It took City less than five minutes to draw blood as Kevin De Bruyne’s hopeful pass from deep inside his own half sent Sane scampering clear.
The Germany winger outpaced Hector Bellerin and skipped past David Ospina — deputising in goal for the injured Petr Cech — before rolling in his eighth City goal.
When De Bruyne bent a low shot against the post and David Silva forced Ospina to parry with the rebound, Arsenal looked set for a long afternoon.
Koscielny injury
They worked a foothold, however, with Mesut Ozil putting a tame shot straight at Willy Caballero, Nacho Monreal lashing over from a corner and Alexis Sanchez curling centimetres wide.
It took a last-ditch sliding challenge from Fernandinho, meanwhile, to prevent Sanchez applying the finishing touch to Ozil’s flick.
Wenger’s men equalised in the 40th minute when Gael Clichy played Walcott onside from Mustafi’s header and the England man bundled a shot past Caballero.
But in testament to Arsenal’s recent travails, parity would exist for just 131 seconds.
De Bruyne’s dart into the box was halted by the sliding Laurent Koscielny, but Silva collected the loose ball and laid it off to Aguero, who crashed a low, angled drive beneath Ospina.
Koscielny was forced off by injury at the break, with Gabriel taking his place, while Guardiola tightened things up by introducing Yaya Toure for Raheem Sterling and moving De Bruyne out to the right.
Arsenal had threatened in first-half stoppage time, Walcott stabbing over from Sanchez’s pass, and eight minutes into the second half they levelled when Mustafi rose to head in Ozil’s corner.
While Wenger sent on Olivier Giroud and Alex Iwobi for Walcott and Danny Welbeck in search of a third goal, it was City who came closest to finding a winner.
Ospina was obliged to save from a booming Fernandinho drive and a header by Aguero, who had also headed wide from Navas’s cross moments before Walcott’s equaliser.
City wanted a penalty in stoppage time after the ball brushed Monreal’s arm as he attempted a stooping header, but referee Andre Marriner said no.

eNCA | Man drowns at Clifton
CAPE TOWN – One man drowned and another managed to swim to shore after their rubber duck capsized off-shore of Clifton Beach in Cape Town on Sunday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.
NSRI crew were activated just before 10am following reports of a rubber-duck capsized off Clifton 1st Beach with two people on board, NSRI Bakoven duty coxswain Mark Thompson said.
The skipper of the rubber-duck was found uninjured on the beach.
He told rescuers his 34-year-old crewman was missing in the surf after their boat had capsized in heavy swells about 200 metres off-shore.
During an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search in heavy swells and breaking surf members of the public spotted the body of the missing man in the surf-line at Clifton 4th Beach.
They were able to secure the body, which was then recovered onto the beach where NSRI members started cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Paramedics joined in but the man was eventually declared dead.
Police had opened an inquest docket and the South African Maritime Safety Authority would investigate the incident, Thompson said.
“It appears that the crew of the rubber-duck may have been on stand-by for a private Clifton swim after launching earlier at Oceana Power Boat Club.”
