A 2-day-old baby born prematurely has become the country’s first neonatal Covid-19 death.
The death toll has hit 339.
The baby was born prematurely and had lung difficulties which required ventilation support immediately after birth. The mother had tested positive for Covid-19 and the child subsequently tested positive.
The number of cases is now at 18 003 – an increase of 803.
Here are the top stories of the day
Experts have painted a grim forecast of South Africa’s battle with Covid-19, with a death toll of as many as 45 000 dying as soon as November. The projections also say that the country will soon struggle to meet the demands of people needing ICU beds. The death toll by the end of the month is expected to rise to 500 and the number of cases will hit one million by between June and November.
Mediclinic, a group of private hospitals, has estimated that there could be 200 000 Covid-19 cases in the Western Cape by July for people with medical aid, while Gauteng could have 100 000 cases by November. The group expects surges in other provinces, but at later dates.
Teachers’ unions and education organisations have criticised the government’s back to school plan, saying the plan lacks sufficient detail. Unions feared returning to school without necessary precautions could put lives at risk. The basic education department announced on Tuesday that schooling will return on 1 June for grades 7 and 12 and for small schools.
Parent24 reports that parents are split on the proposed resumption of schooling. Some parents felt sending their children back to school would be risky, and a few reported being open to the idea of homeschooling.
International headlines
The global economy could be set back by a harrowing $82 trillion (the equivalent of R1.47 quadrillion in current rand estimates) in damages related to the coronavirus pandemic over the next five years, according to recent findings by a University of Cambridge department that examines systemic risks.
Brazil’s health ministry recommended using chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine to treat even mild cases of Covid-19, a treatment President Jair Bolsonaro has pushed for despite a lack of conclusive evidence of their effectiveness.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday the country will have 25 000 virus tracing staff recruited by June so the country can “make progress” in its strategy to keep easing the nationwide lockdown.
US President Donald Trump again lashed out at China on Wednesday over the coronavirus pandemic, blaming Beijing for “mass worldwide killing.”
The sale of alcohol, physical sittings of Parliament, resumption of domestic travel and opening of churches were just some of the issues leaders of opposition parties raised with President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday.
They sought to sway Ramaphosa on numerous issues they want to be taken into consideration ahead of the country moving to Level 3 of the nationwide lockdown.
The president remained tight-lipped on what the plans were and gave no indication of any concessions to be made under in the imminent phase of the lockdown, insiders said.
News24 was reliably told in the virtual meeting, which kicked off at 07:00 on Wednesday, party leaders were given ample time to share their views on how the country should be navigating the coronavirus pandemic and the related lockdown to curb the spread of infection.
The country has been under lockdown since March when the government adopted a five-alert level that allows for the staggered reopening of the economy.
Ramaphosa was joined at the meeting by several members of Cabinet including Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and Cooperative Governance Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma whose department has been responsible for promulgating the regulations adopted by the government during the crisis.
Some of the suggestions made to the president included increased liquor prices and sin tax in the hope that many would not flock to outlets or even panic buy booze.
“We were really happy that Mkhize and Dr Dlamini-Zuma were present today, often the president skirts over issues or just doesn’t answer some of our questions because it seems he doesn’t have in-depth knowledge, today they stepped in to assist and clarify some issues,” said the ATM’s leader, Vuyo Zungula, to News24.
Alcohol and tobacco
He added while some in the room had been for and against the sale of alcohol, which is set to come into effect during Level 3 but under strict conditions, party leaders were also concerned with how the reintroduction of alcohol needed to take shape.
“The sense is that South Africa needs to avoid the India experience where the resumption of liquor results in safety regulations being discarded,” said Zungula.
Ramaphosa is also said to not have provided answers to concerns over whether Police Minister Bheki Cele had the capacity to deal with the increased sales of tobacco and alcohol on the black market.
Dlamini-Zuma used the meeting to once again raise issues against the sale of tobacco, telling opposition leaders that world health regulations have been explicit about the role of the product in the battle against the virus which attacks the respiratory system.
Churches
The ACDP, which shares the views of the ATM on churches, seemed to believe the meeting gave a glimmer of hope regarding the resumption of church gatherings, its leader, Kenneth Meshoe who has tested positive for Covid-19, told News24, saying he believed this was a matter currently being looked into.
“I think the good thing about the meeting is that we weren’t given three minutes to make a point but beyond that the president didn’t give away anything, he seemed to hear us and spoke of more consultations,” said Meshoe.
The ACDP leader said Ramaphosa gave diplomatic responses when asked about parliamentarians being able to physically meet as well as the request to consider further relaxing domestic travel in the country.
The president is said to not want to impose his views on Parliament, leaving it to the speaker to make that decision.
“We find it difficult to operate via Zoom and to keep executive accountable as they don’t respond to letters or answer questions,” said Zungula.
No indication
The FF Plus’ Pieter Groenewald is another leader who attended the meeting. He said it had left him uncertain on the way forward as the president gave nothing away.
“The one time he was shaking his head as if to agree with me on the economy being reopened, especially the sole proprietor business and the small businesses but in the end Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma came and responded. They were just sticking to their position that these are their levels,” added Groenewald.
He said there was no true indication of whether the country was moving to Level 3 on a national level, nor did he share details of when he would address the nation.
Groenewald, however, said Ramaphosa gave some explanation regarding the decision to declare a national state of disaster as opposed to a state of emergency.
He added the president had told opposition leaders he received advice from lawyers that a state of emergency would require Parliament’s approval after 21 days and for it to also approve the regulations, which Ramaphosa could not see happening then.
“But that’s not an excuse, that’s not a good excuse as Parliament is holding virtual meetings, portfolio committees are functioning,” he said.
While Ramaphosa is expected to continue with his consultations, it is likely he might address the nation before the end of the week.
Reopening of schools
The IFP’s Velenkosini Hlabisa said he found the discussions with Ramaphosa fruitful.
He told News24 the government’s approach was a lot in line with his party’s wishes, however, it had concerns over the reopening of schools.
Hlabisa said he had called on the government to exercise maximum caution in this regard and ensure the agreements reached between the Department of Basic Education and unions were adhered to.
“If regulations are ignored it would be like testing deep waters and playing with the lives of children and teachers.”
Referring to a debate on whether moving the country down a level when the World Health Organisation felt it was not ready, Hlabisa said he agreed with the president’s view that it was time for South Africa to move on from Level 4.
“What consoles us are that the numbers of recoveries are also high, a sign that we are managing the virus.”

The world post Covid-19 could see more regional integration with countries working together, but there are also concerns of rising economic nationalism, which was already in the works before the crisis hit, deputy finance minister David Masondo has said.
Masondo was on Wednesday afternoon part of a panel discussion hosted by the University of Johannesburg’s Institute for Future Knowledge, where he shared views on what the world may look like in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.
Other panellists included Grant Harris, a former advisor on Africa to President Barack Obama, and Professor Dong Wang of Peking University’s Institute for Global Cooperation and Understanding.
The virtual panel discussion also broached issues such as opportunities for countries working together to fight the pandemic and the global risks of rising nationalism.
Nine Eastern Cape healthcare workers, including five nurses, have been suspended for allegedly refusing to attend a Covid-19 patient as they apparently did not have personal protective equipment.
This after Bhisho Hospital was closed after a senior nurse died and her three colleagues tested positive for Covid-19.
Eastern Cape health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo confirmed the suspension of the workers at Grey Hospital in King William’s Town.
He said Bhisho Hospital had been closed following the cases, saying this would allow for decontamination and deep cleaning.
While Gauteng Premier David Makhura says he believes his province is ready for Level 3 of the Covid-19 lockdown, that decision will still be made by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC).
On Wednesday, the premier and his executive visited manufacturing companies around the province to assess the level of compliance ahead of the relaxation of lockdown regulations at the end of May.
South Africa is currently under a lockdown, which has 5 alert levels, with Level 5 being a hard lockdown with reduced economic activity, while Level 1 would see sit-down restaurants and sporting facilities being reopened.
On Tuesday, Makhura told the Gauteng Legislature that the entire province would move to Level 3 in June. He said it couldn’t work for some parts of the country’s economic hub to be on Level 3, while others remained on Level 4 or some even shifted to Level 2 as regions and districts were all interconnected.
The “early flare-up” of Covid-19 infections in the Western Cape is an indication that a similar explosion can happen elsewhere, hence there will be a “focused intervention” in the Western Cape, Deputy Minister of Health Joe Phaahla told Parliament’s health committees.
This after several ANC MPs expressed their concern to the Department of Health at Wednesday’s meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Health and the Select Committee on Health and Social Services.
The committees were being briefed on the health department’s annual performance plan, budget and strategy for 2021 to 2025.
ANC MP Tshilidzi Munyai wanted the national government to intervene in the DA-governed Western Cape’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has advised schoolchildren and teachers with comorbidities to stay at home as the province rides out the coronavirus pandemic, even though schools are due to partially open on 1 June.
“If you are a learner and you do have one of those comorbidities, my advice would be that you would need to continue your lessons from home,” he said during a virtual press briefing on Wednesday.
Winde said the department would have to get the lessons to the pupil.
He added that the same applied to affected teachers – that they should stay home.
This was after Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Tuesday that Grades 7 and 12 could return to school on 1 June.
According to the province’s head of the Department of Health, Dr Keith Cloete, the Western Cape is heading into its peak coronavirus period.
The global economy could be set back by a harrowing $82 trillion (the equivalent of R1.47 quadrillion, or one thousand four hundred and seventy trillion rand) in damages related to the coronavirus pandemic over the next five years, according to recent findings by a University of Cambridge department that examines systemic risks.
These cost projections are based on 2019 gross domestic product volumes which stood at $69.2 trillion for the world’s 19 leading economies. The contrast, in comparison, is visibly massive.
The Centre for Risk Studies at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School determined that the potential toll could range between what it called an “optimistic loss” of $3.3 trillion in case of rapid recovery, and $82 trillion in the event of an economic depression.
While lost value of $82 trillion is the worst case scenario, the centre’s consensus projection was a loss of some $26.8 trillion, or 5.3%, of global GDP in the coming five years.
Covid-19, the disease caused in humans by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, remains a mystery that needs a lot more unwrapping. At first, experts believed that the conditions caused by the novel coronavirus were just respiratory diseases.
But as the virus circled the globe, doctors saw a wider range of diseases in their patients, fatal in many cases.
These complications include heart failure, heart attacks and blood clots, which were all reported by emergency doctors in a new scientific paper.
The paper was published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
A Canadian newborn is a “probable” case of infection with the new coronavirus while still in the womb, doctors report. Other such cases have been suspected and reported in prior studies.
But the mother’s active case of Covid-19, along with the fact that the baby boy was delivered via C-section, add weight to the notion that maternal-foetal transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus can occur, the Toronto doctors concluded.
There was good news, however: Although the baby was born preterm (about 36 weeks), he was a healthy 6.5 pounds (just under 3kg). And even though testing positive for coronavirus, he did not develop Covid-19.
Still, the case “represents a probable case of congenital SARS-CoV-2 infection in a liveborn neonate,” said researchers led by paediatrician Dr Prakesh Shah, of Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital. They published their report on 14 May in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
The coronavirus pandemic could scuttle more than 28 million elective surgeries across the globe this year, according to a new study. British researchers gathered information from surgeons at 359 hospitals in 71 countries about elective surgery plans, and used that data in a statistical model to estimate numbers in 190 countries.
Based on a 12-week period of peak disruption to hospital services caused by the pandemic, 28.4 million elective surgeries worldwide could be cancelled or postponed in 2020, the study found.
Each additional week of hospital service disruption would cause 2.4 more million cancellations.
“Although essential, cancellations place a heavy burden on patients and society,” said study author Dr Aneel Bhangu, consultant surgeon and senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham.
