Cape Town – Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal in their Match in Africa exhibition at Cape Town Stadium on Friday evening.
Federer won the three-set contest 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
In windy conditions, Federer broke Nadal in the very first game of the match and from there it went on serve for the remainder of the set.
The Swiss ace looked comfortable on serve until the eighth game when he had to fend off a break point before holding for a 5-3 lead.
Nadal held serve for 5-4 but Federer comfortably served out the set to love in front of a boisterous crowd.
It went on serve for the remainder of the opening set, before Federer took it 6-4.
Nadal broke early in the second set for a 2-0 advantage, but Federer broke back straight away.
However, the Swiss could not consolidate the break and allowed the Spaniard to break again for a 3-1 lead in the next game.
Nadal would not relinquish the advantage again and took the set 6-3.
But Federer regrouped and broke at the start of the third set and from there he roared to the finish line.
Federer had to fend off a break point while serving for the match, but held his nerve and sealed the contest in style with a superb drop volley at the net.
In the end, Federer’s serve made the difference – he served nine aces compared to Nadal’s solitary ace.
The match started with the crowd in high spirits, with Springbok World Cup-winning captain Siya Kolisi making a surprise entrance on court to do the pre-game coin toss.
Kolisi handed Federer a Springbok jersey with the Swiss star’s name embroidered on the back, with the 20-time Grand Slam winner wearing it during his warm-up.
Earlier, in the doubles curtain raiser, Federer teamed up with Microsoft co-founder, philanthropist and rand trillionaire, Bill Gates, to defeat Nadal and South African comedian Trevor Noah 6-3 in a one-set shootout.
WORLD RECORD
After the match, organisers confirmed the official attendance figure as 51 954 – a world record crowd for a tennis match, breaking the record set in November 2019 when Federer defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in Mexico City in front of 42 517 fans.
It was the sixth instalment of exhibition matches for Federer’s foundation.
To date, the foundation has raised over $52 million in support of educational and athletics programmes for children in Africa.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has conducted 42 tests for the coronavirus in South Africa, the results of which have all come back negative.
By Friday, the coronavirus death toll rose to 636 and more than 31 000 infections have been recorded across China, where the virus started, Aljazeera reported.
The virus has since spread to other countries, with at least 25 countries reporting confirmed cases.

However, the NICD confirmed on Friday evening there was no confirmed cases in South Africa.
While 42 tests have been conducted in South Africa, NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said the collection and testing of samples from individuals with symptoms was normal and demonstrated effective surveillance of the coronavirus.
“We would like to acknowledge healthcare professionals across the country from the public and private healthcare sectors who have been instrumental in detecting, identifying and responding to possible cases,” Jimoh said.
On Thursday, News24 reported two patients in KwaZulu-Natal suspected of being infected with the coronavirus were cleared, with one case being handled at a departmental facility while the other was at a private facility in Durban.
On Wednesday, a patient in Limpopo was cleared after being held in isolation at Ellisras Hospital in Lephalale.
According to the provincial health department, this had been a precautionary measure after the man developed a high fever and other symptoms consistent with a respiratory disease.
The NICD also cautioned the public against rumours and misinformation concerning the coronavirus.
Jimoh said the public could access information from the national Department of Health, World Health Organisation and NICD communication platforms.

The NICD also gave advice to prevent the spread of the coronavirus by practising hand hygiene, cough etiquette and avoiding contact with animals when in a high-risk country.
The recommendations include:
“The NICD assures the public that systems have been put in place to rapidly identify and detect any imported cases of the 2019-nCoV [coronavirus] in South Africa and that the country is prepared should we have a positive case,” Jimoh said.
The family of a Durban man whose mouth was infested with maggots shortly before he died in RK Khan Hospital is suing the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health for negligence, seeking R11m.
On Friday, TimesLive reported the family of Sadek Ebrahim, who died last year, had filed a claim in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court against RK Khan Hospital in Chatsworth and Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu for R11m.
The website said the family accused departmental officials of acting negligently and recklessly in treating Ebrahim.

The claim is for general damages, emotional trauma as well as pain and suffering.
His son, Azaad, was claiming R7.5m while his wife, Edith Rajaruthinam, was demanding R3.5m, TimesLive reported.
News24 previously reported Azaad had vowed not to rest until the hospital’s staff paid for neglecting his father.
Ebrahim was admitted to hospital after suffering a stroke and was found with maggots in his mouth shortly before his death.
A video of the creatures in his mouth then emerged, showing the visibly unwell man’s upper lip infested with maggots.
Speaking to News24 shortly after his father’s funeral in 2019, a distraught Azaad said he would do all in his power to ensure others did not suffer like his father.
“I do not want others to go through what I have. I took such good care of my father but the treatment we received at the hospital and the unprofessionalism of the staff is horrendous. That cannot go on.”

Azaad said his father’s troubles started shortly after he was admitted to hospital on 19 June 2019.
“My mother came home from work to find his leg had turned completely black and had become like jelly. He had previously been to the hospital for sores, but we were told to it was not bad, and given antibiotics and sent home.”
During admission, Ebrahim said nurses were degrading his family because of the strong smell coming from his father.
“The doctor was excellent, but the nurses were so unprofessional, spraying perfume all over, but not engaging with us.”
He said it was decided his father would be operated on as soon as possible. However, days later, no surgery had taken place.
Just five days after being admitted to hospital, Azaad discovered his dad’s lip was infected with maggots.
“Maggots were crawling and so active and moving. I lost my mind. I screamed. I couldn’t believe that no one had attended to him. The first thing anyone does in the morning is brush their teeth. They couldn’t even do that. Not even a guard came into the room. They just isolated my dad in the room because of the smell.”
