Sport24.co.za | Root facing ‘really good selection headache’ as Archer nears return
Johannesburg – England captain Joe Root on Thursday was looking forward to the prospect of two of the world’s fastest bowlers operating on a pace-friendly pitch in the fourth and final Test against South Africa, starting at the Wanderers on Friday.
Root said Jofra Archer had bowled with “good pace” in practice on Wednesday after recovering from an elbow injury which kept him out of the second and third Tests – both of which England won to take an unbeatable 2-1 series lead to Johannesburg.
He said that if Archer had no lingering signs of injury or soreness, England would have a “really good selection headache”.
Mark Wood startled several of the South African batsmen in the third Test in Port Elizabeth, bowling bouncers at around 150kmh.
Archer is also among the world’s small club of 150kmh bowlers.
“It would be nice to see how they go together,” said Root. “I think they would be a relentless barrage of pace which is exciting, especially on a surface such as you typically get here at the Wanderers.”
But Root cautioned that history showed it was not always the fastest bowlers who prospered at the stadium.
“The accurate guys are those who have success here. It would be great to have that firepower but ultimately we’ve got to make sure we hit those areas (on the pitch),” he added.
“We’ve been very good in that department on this tour.”
Root said that it would be “a very big achievement” if England could complete a series win.
“When we’ve got our opportunities we’ve taken them,” he said.
‘How strong are we mentally?’
South African captain Faf du Plessis said his side needed to dig deep to salvage a series draw.
“How strong are we mentally in this last hurdle? We know where we have been a little bit poor in our game plans,” he said.
He said South Africa had not scored enough runs in the first innings.
“That’s the basic of Test cricket, you can look at England as a blueprint, the top three batting at their own pace and making sure they (are) setting up the innings for the rest of the guys to come in and play.”
Du Plessis refused to answer questions about his future after being replaced as one-day international captain by Quinton de Kock – and left out of the squad that will play three ODIs against England, although a spokesperson said he would be willing to talk about one-day cricket at the end of the match.
“I’d like to, for my own personal reasons, focus on this Test match,” he said.
Du Plessis said Temba Bavuma would replace Zubayr Hamza in the XI, but there would also be a change in the batting order, with Rassie van der Dussen moving up to number three, the position filled by Hamza in the first three Tests.
He said the rest of the line-up was dependent on conditions, especially with a forecast of rain on the first day.
Du Plessis said he hoped Vernon Philander, who will retire from international cricket after the match, would finish his Test career “with the storybook ending he deserves” on a pitch where he has done well in the past.
News24.com | Sale of multimillion-rand City of Tshwane mayoral house to yield 40 houses for elderly, disabled
The sale of the multimillion-rand City of Tshwane mayoral house is set to yield 40 houses for the elderly and disabled in Atteridgeville.
The houses are currently under construction.
The mayoral mansion was sold for R5m at an auction in 2017, which the City transferred to the City’s human settlements department to build houses for the needy.
City spokesperson Omogolo Taunyane said Acting Mayor Abel Tau had visited the project in Atteridgeville Extension 19.
“In 2017, the DA-led administration elected to auction the mayoral mansion for R5m in an effort to use resources effectively by targeting low-hanging fruit to accelerate service delivery and support the commitment to be financial prudent in the City’s affairs.
“As a result, 55 jobs have been created. Part of the project’s success in improving access to decent housing is the utilisation of alternative building technology that is reliable, durable, environmentally friendly and easy to maintain,” Taunyane said.
She added upon completion in April 2020, beneficiaries, who were currently on the National Housing Needs Register, would be given much-needed dignity by having a place to call home.
Tau said the selection criteria would be restricted to the elderly, people living with disabilities, child-headed households and the socio-economic circumstances of a family.
He added delays in completing the project was due to the handover process from the main contractor to a new one.
Tau said he would watch the project’s progress closely to avoid further delays.
News24.com | Maile in violation of Constitution for suspending speaker, says Tshwane council chief whip
The chief whip of the Tshwane council has lashed out at Gauteng Cogta MEC Lebogang Maile following the suspension of speaker Katlego Mathebe, insisting that he had no right to interject himself in the internal processes of the council.
Chief whip and DA member Christo van den Heever launched a scathing attack on Maile on Thursday afternoon, accusing him of violating the Constitution.
“It is clear that the MEC has overstepped his boundaries by taking punitive disciplinary action against the speaker of council without following the rules of natural justice,” Van den Heever said in a statement.
READ: Maile suspends Vasco da Gama and Katlego Mathebe without pay
“He has no right to interject himself in the internal processes of the Tshwane council.
“By doing so, the MEC is in violation of the prescripts of the Constitution, which confers on municipalities the right to govern, on their own initiative, the local government affairs of their communities, while limiting the national and provincial governments from impeding those rights.”
Van den Heever was reacting to Maile’s decision to suspend Mathebe as he held the view that the speaker had breached the council’s code of conduct.
Maile’s rationale behind Mathebe’s six-month suspension without pay follows a special council sitting where she refused to bend to calls by the ANC and EFF to change the order in which motions of no confidence would be heard.
The sitting, which was held earlier this month, was meant to deal with motions against the mayor, speaker, chair of chairs and acting speaker.
According to the sequence of the motions as set out by Mathebe, her motion would have been heard last, allowing her to preside over the other three before recusing herself.
The ANC and EFF, who called for the special sitting, wanted Mathebe’s motion to be heard first.
“Clearly, the speaker’s overall conduct was blatantly motivated to collapse the entire council proceedings to safeguard her self-interest at the expense of the interest of the residents of Tshwane,” Maile said.
Openly waging war
Van den Heever accused Maile of openly waging war, on behalf of the ANC.
“If the MEC has concerns, he should utilise the legislated and regulated channels as determined by chapter 3 of the Constitution to engage with the City in a meaningful and co-operative manner.”
The chief whip also refuted comments that Maile had arranged a meeting with him and the council’s multi-party whippery committee following Mathebe’s suspension.
Katlego Mathebe. (Deaan Vivier)
“Let it be noted that no such notice has been received, nor any request to issue such notice to convene a meeting of this nature,” Van den Heever said.
He added that Cogta had no jurisdiction over the multi-party whippery.
“The office of the chief whip has the responsibility of maintaining the discipline of councillors, and asserts that council has not established any special investigative committee to investigate the conduct of the speaker of council, nor has a report [been] served at council, any of its committees, nor the multi-party whippery into any allegations of misconduct on the speaker’s behalf.”
Bullying tactics
Following Maile’s decision to suspend Mathebe, as well as former Johannesburg DA speaker Vasco da Gama, DA leader John Steenhuisen said the party would be filing an urgent court application for alleged political harassment.
In his sharply-worded statement, Steenhuisen said the DA would not give into bullying tactics by Maile, adding that their lawyers would review the legal merits of the two councillors’ suspension, News24 previously reported.
The DA leader, through an attorney, also wrote to Maile, inviting him to retract his “unlawful” decision, “failing which we will apply for personal and punitive costs against Maile,” Steenhuisen said.
Maile said the decision to suspend both councillors was consistent with the law and he was prepared to go to the courts to defend the decision.
He added that the decision was “impartial to avoid any accusation of tilting the balance of forces in councils to favour a particular political party”.
“It is imperative to note that these decisions are based on strengthening local government by ensuring those elected into positions of responsibility carry out their work in the best interest of the electorate,” Maile said.
Health24.com | Using marijuana to help with sleep? Benefits may not last
Medical marijuana may not provide long-term relief of sleep issues in people battling chronic pain, a new study finds, mainly because users may develop a tolerance to the drug.
The finding is important “considering the ageing of the population, the relatively high prevalence of sleep problems in this population, along with the increasing use of medicinal cannabis,” said an Israeli team led by Sharon Sznitman, from the School of Public Health at the University of Haifa.
Various sleep issues
According to the study authors, chronic pain affects between 19% to 37% of adults in the developed world, many who have sleep problems.
Some are turning to medical marijuana for help getting good shut-eye. But how well does it work?
To find out, Sznitman’s group assessed sleep and pain in 128 patients who’d had chronic pain for at least a year. All were over age 50 and about half (66) said they used medical marijuana to help manage their sleep problems.
The type of sleep issues varied: About one in four patients said they always woke up early and weren’t able to get back to sleep; one in five said they always had difficulty falling asleep, and 27% said they woke up during the night.
Of the patients who used marijuana, average duration of use was four years, using an average of 31 grams of the drug per month. Most (69%) said they smoked marijuana, and about one in five used either cannabis oil or vapour.
A downside
The study found that pot users were less likely to wake during the night, but there were no differences between users and nonusers in the time it took them get to sleep or in the frequency of early awakening.
And there seemed to be a downside: The researchers found that more frequent marijuana use was associated with greater difficulty in falling asleep, plus more frequent awakenings during the night.
“This may signal the development of tolerance,” Sznitman’s team wrote.
But the study couldn’t prove cause-and-effect, so other factors might be at play. For example, the authors said that more frequent pot use might simply be an indicator that these people were in more pain or might be depressed/anxious. That might explain these participants’ higher propensity for sleep problems.
One US sleep medicine expert said that for some patients with chronic pain, medical marijuana can offer “some hope”.
The new study is far from conclusive as to the drug’s benefits or risks, said Dr Margarita Oks, attending physician in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
Doesn’t reduce cancer pain
“There was no mention of the exclusion of sleep-related disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnoea, that can manifest with insomnia,” she said, “and this may be a huge confounder.”
And Oks said the fact that the study was done in Israel makes a difference, too.
In Israel, “cannabis is legalised and therefore concentrations of THC [the ingredient in marijuana that produces a high] can be objectively and reproducibly measured,” she explained. “In the United States this is not yet the case.”
A second study in the same issue of the journal concluded that cannabinoids (the active chemicals in medical marijuana) do not reduce cancer-related pain. This review pooled the results of five different studies involving more than 1 400 cancer patients. It was led by Dr. Jason Boland of the University of Hull in England.
Both studies were published in the journal BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care.
