Senior Procurement Officer
Purpose:
- To buy goods and services in support of the operation activities of the division.
- To be responsible for the management of staff and processes to ensure safeguarding and maintenance of optimum stock holding in order to provide support service to all departments.
Qualifications:
- Commercial degree
- Senior Diploma in Purchasing Management will be advantageous
- Legal or technical qualification will be advantageous
Experience:
- At least 8 years’ experience in a Buying capacity of which at least 2 years in a management/leader capacity
- Experience in Store Management environment will be advantageous
- Strong knowledge of applicable commercial legislation will be advantageous
Responsibilities:
Service Level:
- Converting of orders in compliance with purchasing procedure.
- Investigate and action account queries promptly, when these are the result of price variances.
- Investigate supplier non-performance, take the appropriate action and follow up to ensure no similar problems are experienced.
- Liaise with suppliers in terms of the logistics of deliveries
- Maintain good interpersonal relations with suppliers, thus gaining the best possible service from them.
Procurement:
- Select and source from suppliers in line with preferential procurement targets.
- Evaluate potential suppliers in order to improve the BEE score.
System maintenance:
- Follow-up on outstanding orders – system maintenance.
- Follow-up on orders received but not invoiced – system maintenance.
Cost containment/savings:
- Be fully conversant with current market prices of all items required.
- Be able to evaluate quotations.
- Negotiate discounts and settlement discounts.
Working Capital:
- Take responsibility for stock under your control
- Maintain and manage optimum stock levels to support operations in Division
Staff management:
- Manage staff performance and development
- Supervision, training, mentoring and performance evaluation of staff.
Compliance:
- Comply with all policies and procedures applicable on Procurement and Stores.
- Responsible for stock counts.
- Compliance with housekeeping standards and procedures – Safety, Environment and Food Safety.
- Manage departmental expenditure within budget guidelines.

Drug mule Nolubabalo Nobanda may have spent her first Christmas at home in eight years but she still ate Thai food on December 25, according the Sunday Times.
Nobanda was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport in December 2011 after getting off a Qatar Airways flight when approximately 1.5kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of R1.2m was found in her dreadlocks, News24 previously reported.
She told Thailand authorities at the time of her arrest that she had been hired to deliver the drugs to a customer at a hotel in Bangkok.
Initially sentenced to 30 years in prison, Nobanda’s sentence was first halved and then reduced by a further two-and-a-half years in May, News24 previously reported.
Nobanda told the Sunday Times that the staple food in prison is rice and soup.
“Missionaries used to visit us – especially foreign prisoners – on Christmas. They would bring us lunch, if they could, and small presents just to brighten up the day and prison life.”
Learnt to cook
Thailand recognises Buddhism which does not celebrate Christmas.
Nobanda who learnt to cook Thai food while in prison served this to them on Christmas day.
Her mother was happy to have her child home this year to join in celebrations.
“It would be hardest during family time, like Christmas, and hard for us to be jolly and be fully in the festive mood because of her not being around. But this year our prayers have been answered,” she told the publication.
Nobanda now has a Unisa communication science degree which she achieved while in prison. She has however found it hard to adapt since returning to South Africa.
She said many of her friends have married while others have had children.
“Their lives have moved forward while mine was stuck in one place. When I left, my sister was nine, now she is 18.”

A suspect, who escaped from the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, was among more than 800 people arrested in a police crackdown over the weekend in Gauteng.
Police confirmed on Sunday that Africa Nkuna, who escaped on December 9, was rearrested.
During the chaotic scenes at the court on the day, three other suspected were rearrested, while another was shot dead. Nkuna, who was in court for a murder charge, managed to exit the court and was on the run before being rearrested by Kagiso police on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said police and detectives from the Kagiso Crime Prevention Unit intercepted a Nissan Mpendulo minibus that Nkuna and his friend were making use of.
He said Nkuna now also faces charges of escaping from lawful custody and attempted murder.
Masondo noted that Gauteng’s Safer Festive Season Operations saw more than 850 suspects being arrested for various crimes.
He said 199 suspects were arrested in Johannesburg as police were conducting roadblocks as well as stop and searches.
“Drunk driving topped the list as 39 offenders who have been found driving motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol were detained.”

Meanwhile, police in Ekurhuleni also worked jointly with other law enforcement officers and arrested more than 360 suspects.
These were for crime ranging from house robbery, rape, assault, malicious damage to property, possession of drugs, car hijacking, reckless and negligent driving and attempted murder.
In Tshwane, unlicensed liquor stores were raided, resulting in 10 of the outlets being shut down for non-compliance. Large volumes of liquor were also confiscated during the operation.
