Let me paint you a picture: It’s a glorious day and you’re hiking up a mountain trail, enjoying the beautiful weather—but something in your knees just keeps bugging you. It’s nothing too troubling, so you go on, and slowly, the pain spreads and your tendons start to feel like they’re being pulled so tight that you can’t bend your knees without pain. Even though you keep vaguely massaging your knees, you have trouble pinpointing exactly where the pain is emanating from, and it feels more concentrated around your kneecaps.
The situation described above is of one of the most prevalent forms of knee pain: medically referred to as patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), and colloquially known as runner’s knee. In fact, knee pain is the most commonly-reported type of joint pain in adults, according to a national survey, and a 2011 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine estimated that 25 percent of all adults suffer from frequent knee pain. It can be caused by vigorous physical activities that put persistent stress on the knee joints, such as jogging, squatting, or climbing, but can also stem from super common everyday activities like walking down stairs.

Luckily, there are many methods available to prevent or treat this widespread condition, including knee straps. Known as infrapatellar straps by medical professionals, these bands are known to be one of the most effective (and simple!) ways to stabilize and limit excessive movement of the tendon, and in turn, relieve knee pain.
Designed to be wrapped around your upper calf just below the knee, knee straps are adjustable bands that work to compress the infrapatellar tendon (located at the end of your kneecap). The results of a 2011 study suggest that knee straps can reduce “the predicted maximum localized tendon strain” on the knee, and another study from February 2019 concluded that the straps are “effective in reducing local pain” without altering performance. Based on these findings, it’s no wonder that marathon runners and casual joggers alike seem to swear by these handy little tools for keeping pain at bay. Ready to give it a try? We suggest one of Amazon’s best-selling options—the IPOW Knee Pain Relief & Patella Stabilizer Knee Strap—that also happens to be on sale for 15% off right now.

More than 1,400 Amazon shoppers gave the IPOW knee strap a perfect five-star review, and numerous marathon runners even pointed out that the knee straps completely took away aches after their runs.

“I just ran my first ever 1/2 marathon and these saved my knees!,” said one reviewer. “After the run I took them off and placed them in my bag and completely forgot all about my knees. They didn't hurt after the race AT ALL.”
Another user called the stabilizer strap a “lifesaver” and continued, “I don't have knee pain when I run anymore. I was amazed at how helpful these were.” A third added, “The support they offer is immense and you feel immediate relief which allows you to resume full physical activity.”
Runners also love IPOW’s knee strap for its soft cushioning and shock-absorbent material that they say feels stable and comfortable without adding too much pressure or tightness. Plus, it’s machine-washable and quick-drying, so you can wear it during your toughest workouts without worrying about getting it sweaty. The lightweight knee strap is already affordable at $14 a pair, but you can get your set for even less—just $12—right now. So whether you’re preparing to train for a marathon or just need help alleviating everyday knee pain, try this “lifesaver” knee strap for yourself while it’s still on sale.

Cape Town – The second edition of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) launches on Friday as the Jozi Stars host the Cape Town Blitz in Johannesburg in the opening game.
Play starts at 17:30 with live coverage on SABC3 and Radio 2000 from 17:00.
New Jozi Stars coach Donovan Miller revealed that the buzz and excitement has left him losing sleep.
The new season is set to raise the bar on the inaugural season last year, with Jamaican Miller, who replaced champion predecessor Enoch Nkwe.
The opening clash is at the Wanderers Stadium and the start of five rollercoaster weeks for Cricket South Africa (CSA) that will see 32 matches being played in 39 days. All the games will be broadcast exclusively live on SABC.
Speaking ahead of the tournament opener, the debutant Stars coach says he is excited by the challenge that lies ahead.
“I’m so excited that I’m not sleeping at the moment,” Miller beamed. “I think the great thing for the Jozi Stars is that we have most of the guys that won us the title last year.”
The Stars were the best team overall last year and will no doubt be the team that all the other five will be aiming to gun down in the coming weeks.
However, their coach is not expecting any extra pressure on his side despite carrying the title of ‘defending champions’.
“I wouldn’t say we’re under any extra pressure, because it’s something natural and it comes down to how you deal with it,” Miller explained. “You can only bring pressure on yourself. If we plan well and we go out and execute then we’ll get close to winning games and once we’re winning games, you’ll get close to where you want to be.”
They have also retained most of the players that did duty for them in 2018, although their big miss will be captain Dane Vilas, who was snapped up by the Durban Heat. However, Miller admitted that having everyone they wanted was impossible.
He also said that he expected Friday’s opponents, the Blitz, and all the other teams, to pose an equally strong challenge during the competition.
“We would have loved to have Dane and the others that are no longer here, but that is how the draft system works,” the Stars coach added. “I was looking at the draft and how all the other teams planned.
“They planned really well, they selected players smartly and they put a lot of thought process into their selections. All the teams are pretty strong, but we have a very strong team as well. We have a lot of winners and we won’t be worrying about the opposition because once we bring our ‘A’ game, we’ll be in.
“Everyone is excited and cannot wait to cross that line on Friday.”
Blitz coach Ashwell Prince is also looking ahead to the start, although he has not been losing sleep about anything.
His side were the early-season pace-setters last year, before going off the boil, although they still managed to go all the way to reach the championship match.
“We will try to keep things the same,” he said. “Momentum is important and last year we obviously started nicely. We got four wins in a row at the start and then we probably lost our way a little bit towards the middle part of the campaign.
“But, as I say, we had momentum early on and we probably would have liked to have had more rhythm towards the end of the campaign, but we weren’t able to quite hit our straps later on.”
Looking ahead to their trip to Gauteng, Prince concluded: “Obviously they won the competition last year, so I suppose that’s the yardstick at the moment.
“We played quite nicely up there last year, we beat them at the Wanderers. It will be good to go up against them early in the competition and get a good idea of where we are, also where they are, and take it from there.”
The Jozi Stars squad:
Kagiso Rabada, Chris Gayle (Shoaib Malik to replace Gayle from 6th game onwards), Rassie van der Dussen, Reeza Hendricks, Daniel Christian, Temba Bavuma, Duanne Olivier, Simon Harmer, Ryan Rickelton, Aaron Phangiso, Lizaad Williams, Sinethemba Qeshile, Nono Pongolo, Gerald Coetzee, Delano Potgieter, Dane Paterson
The Cape Town Blitz squad:
Quinton de Kock, Wahab Riaz (Moeen Ali to replace Wahab for first two games), Liam Livingstone, Dale Steyn, Sisanda Magala, Anrich Nortje, Asif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Janneman Malan, George Linde, David Bedingham, Vernon Philander, Marques Ackerman, Gregory Mahlokoana, Aviwe Mgijima, Khwezi Gumede
Tickets are on sale at R60 per ticket and are available across TicketPro and other retail outlets, including online sales at www.ticketpro.co.za

Police Minister Bheki Cele is unsure about the whereabouts of the docket in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case, saying he thought it may be with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, however, told City Press that the docket was currently with the office of the national police commissioner.
In an interview on eNCA on Thursday, Cele said he believed the docket was “supposed to be with prosecutions… but I’ll have to confirm that”.
“I am satisfied that the police have done a good job,” Cele told eNCA.
The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was killed during a robbery five years ago at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home. Five others were present at the time.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the head of AfriForum’s private prosecution unit, advocate Gerrie Nel, would be representing the Meyiwa family in an investigation into his death, News24 reported.
‘No progress’
Feeling that no progress was being made by the NPA after the police investigated the case, Meyiwa’s family turned to the lobby group last month to take the prosecution forward.
“It is important that AfriForum gets involved in cases such as these – it’s in the interest of the whole country,” CEO Kallie Kriel said.
“AfriForum serves as a counterweight to the failure of the state and, as a civil rights watchdog, it is our duty to prevent the criminal justice system from collapsing,” he added.
Speaking to a large contingent of journalists outside the 9th Popcru Congress at the Durban International Convention Centre on Wednesday, Cele said that, while it had taken too long for the murder to go unsolved, he was satisfied with the work of the police.
“AfriForum said they were here to embarrass the justice system, not solve the case. To me that was a telling statement. We are not here to embarrass anyone. We are here to solve the matter, and I want to insist the matter will be solved.
‘We are going somewhere’
“It’s been a long time. By now we should have found the results. I am on a year on the matter. I find it satisfying to me that we are going somewhere.
“The family said it is very well satisfied with the work of the police,” he claimed.
Cele was insistent that police were doing all that they could, despite no one being held to account nearly six years after Meyiwa was shot dead in 2014.
In a statement last month, the NPA said it had spoken to the family.
“As part of promoting openness to victims of crime and their families, and after several enquiries about the unsolved murder, the DPP met with the brother of the slain soccer player to explain why prosecution cannot proceed at this stage,” Mjonondwane said.
“The NPA is not prepared to enrol cases with insufficient evidence, lest we be guilty of malicious prosecution and raising false hope to the family of the late Senzo Meyiwa.
“The investigations in this matter are at a sensitive stage. The NPA continues to play a guiding role and once the investigations are concluded and we are satisfied that the matter is court ready, we will not hesitate to bring the perpetrators to book,” Mjonondwane said.
City Press reported at the weekend that it had now emerged that the police will refocus their investigations on those who were in the house at the time of the shooting.
The publication said it had a recording from a senior NPA executive who had told a Meyiwa family member that those inside the house had lied in their statements.
