Sport24.co.za | CSA responds to SACA: No need for financial investigation
Cape Town – The war of words between Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the South African Cricketers Association (SACA) continued on Tuesday night as the strained relationship between the two organisations took its next step.
This comes after three CSA officials, reported to be Corrie van Zyl, Clive Eksteen and Naasei Appiah, were suspended on Tuesday night with CSA alleging they had neglected their duties in a payment dispute with SACA relating to last year’s Mzansi Super League.
In November 2018, SACA and CSA had signed a commercial rights agreement relating to the granting of player commercial rights for use in the 2018 MSL.
According to the agreement, a fee of R2.5 million was due to be paid from CSA to the Players Trust by December 24 last year – and that did not happen.
CSA has since agreed to pay the money over to the Players Trust, but SACA followed up on Wednesday with a strong statement expressing shock at the suspensions and accusing CSA of not adhering to process in an ongoing court dispute that centres around SACA trying to stop a proposed domestic restructure from next season.
SACA has also requested for CSA to reveal in detail its financial situation and provide an in-depth account of exactly how the restructure would be financially viable.
Now, CSA has responded again in the form of a statement.
“Cricket South Africa (CSA) has taken note of the statement released by the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) today and the comments expressed therein by its CEO, Mr. Tony Irish,” the statement read.
“Mr. Irish has confirmed that the dispute over players’ rights for the 2018 Mzansi Super League (MSL) has been settled and that also an agreement is in place for the 2019 edition of the tournament as well.
“We will continue to engage with SACA on all relevant matters but will not do so via the Media.
“As the MSL issue has been settled to the satisfaction of both parties there is no need for the independent investigation that Mr. Irish has suggested.
“It has to be reiterated that the decision to restructure our domestic cricket was taken by the Members’ Council whose prerogative it is.
“Furthermore, there is no need for CSA to have any kind of independent investigation into its financial situation. These are audited both internally and externally with CSA having been given a clean audit year after year. These financials are available to all in our annual integrated report which is a public document.
“In conclusion, it must be stressed that CSA has never released the identity of the staff members currently under precautionary suspension and has no intention of doing so.”
The second edition of the MSL is set to get underway on November 8.

News24.com | ‘They must jump, run and take the ball like springboks’ – Ramaphosa off to Japan to give Boks ‘vuma’
President Cyril Ramaphosa has left for Yokohama, Japan where he will join the Springboks to encourage them ahead of their big game against England in Saturday’s Rugby World Cup final.
Before departing on a flight on Thursday, Ramaphosa said he would visit the Boks in their camp where he would give them “vuma” on behalf of 57 million South Africans who are wishing them well for the game.
PICS: Ramaphosa jets off to Japan + SA’s home soil guide to RWC 2019 final preparations
“I am going to give them a lot of encouragement so that when they go on the field, they must really go out like springboks. They must jump, run and take the ball like springboks would ordinarily do,” the president said.
Ramaphosa reiterated his call for a moment of silence at 13:00 on Friday and encouraged South Africans to wear their Springbok jerseys.
“If there ever was a time when we should wish them well and wish them the best; and pray for them, this is the time. South Africa’s moment has arrived,” he added.
As the anticipation for the final grows, millions have united behind the team, hoping it brings the trophy home.
If South Africa wins, it will be its third post-democracy trophy, having won the cup in 1995 and 2007.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has also joined in, wishing the Boks the best of luck.
In a statement, Tutu thanked Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, coach Rassie Erasmus and the rest of the players for taking the team to the final, News24 reported.
“Your dignity, diversity and courage are infectious. You have restored South African rugby pride and made us all feel good about ourselves,” Tutu said on Thursday.
“A World Cup final is a highly pressured environment, but if you feel weightless when you run onto that Yokohama field on Saturday, it will be because you are being carried by the love, respect and prayers of 56 million of us at home.
“You have already won! God bless you.”

News24.com | Jacob Zuma to fight VBS loan summons to avoid losing Nkandla – reports
Former President Jacob Zuma has filed a notice of intent to fight a summons filed by VBS Mutual Bank for him to pay back R7.3m he owes for his Nkandla home, or risk losing the property, Business Day reported on Friday.
In an exclusive, News24 previously reported that according to court papers filed by the bank’s liquidator, Anoosh Rooplal, Zuma had defaulted on the multimillion-rand loan he obtained in 2016.
The former president secured the bond from VBS to pay R7.8m to the South African Reserve Bank in September 2016. He fell behind on the repayments for the first time in August 2018, when he was in arrears of R109 568.
Now the bank’s liquidator is asking the courts to grant an order forcing Zuma to either pay or risk losing the property.
Business Day and eNCA also reported that Zuma has missed the deadline to file his plea to stop the bank from attaching the property.
Upgrades at the Nkandla homestead included a swimming pool, cattle kraal and amphitheatre, costing South African taxpayers R250m.
In a report released in March 2014, former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found that Zuma unduly benefited from the upgrades, which were supposed to be for security. The report found that the upgrades were not related to security.
She recommended that the former president pay back a portion of the money used for the renovations to the homestead.
