Health24.com | New hope for sex addicts as researchers pinpoint the hormone causing their disorder
Hypersexual disorder or sex addiction is defined as an overactive sex drive and is listed as an impulse-control disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The disorder is characterised by a compulsion to perform sexual acts, obsessive thoughts about sex, a lack of control or sexual habits that may harm the individual or others.
It has been said that approximately 3–6% of the population are affected, and now research has found that the hormone oxytocin may be to blame.
Altered regions of DNA
The study, published in Epigenetics, found that hypersexual disorder could potentially be treated by engineering a way to suppress oxytocin activity. DNA patterns in the blood of 60 patients with hypersexual disorder were measured and compared to 33 samples from healthy volunteers.
8 852 regions of DNA methylations were investigated to identify any variations between the samples. DNA methylation can affect gene expression and the function of genes, which can reduce their activity. Findings were also compared to samples from 107 subjects, of which 24 were alcohol dependent, in order to explore an association with addictive behaviour.
It was revealed that there were two region of DNA that were altered in hypersexual patients. The DNA identified targets genes that are not normally expressed at particularly high levels in the brain and are involved in the regulation of oxytocin. Oxytocin plays a central role in the regulation of pair-bonding behaviour.
Treatment for hypersexuality
The comparison with alcohol-dependent subjects revealed the same DNA region to be significantly under-methylated, suggesting that it may be primarily associated with addictive components of hypersexual disorder, which include sex addiction, dysregulated sexual desire, compulsivity and impulsivity.
Adrian Bostrom, from the department of Neuroscience at Uppsala University, Sweden, who conducted the study with researchers from the Andrology/Sexual Medicine Group (ANOVA) at Karolinska Institutet said, “We set out to investigate the epigenetic regulatory mechanisms behind hypersexual disorder so we could determine whether it has any hallmarks that make it distinct from other health issues.” According to Bostrom, this study is the first of its kind seeking treatment for hypersexuality.
The authors noted that the mean difference in DNA methylation was around 2.6% between patients with hypersexual disorder and healthy volunteers, so the impact on physiological changes could be questioned. However, evidence suggests that even subtle methylation changes could have wide-ranging consequences for more complex conditions such as depression or schizophrenia.

News24.com | Ranjeni Munusamy wants to see face of person claiming crime intelligence fund was used to fix her car
Journalist Ranjeni Munusamy wants to see the face of the police officer who claimed that the police’s crime intelligence fund had paid for repairs to her car.
In an affidavit to cross-examine Lieutenant General Dhanajaya Gangulu Naidoo at the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture, she denied that she had asked for any repairs to her vehicle.
Munusamy also denied that she even knew of any repairs, and that if her car had been repaired, she did not know where the money came from.
“As Colonel Naidoo testified in camera, I seek a further order that I may be granted leave to have sight of Colonel Naidoo or a photograph of him which has been approved by the chairperson in accordance with the order made by the chairperson of the commission on September 26, 2019,” her affidavit to the commission read.
Naidoo claimed on his first day in the hot seat that Munusamy was a confidante of former crime intelligence head General Mulangi Mphego, and that a R40 000 repair bill to Ranjeni’s car was covered by crime intelligence’s Secret Services Account (SSA).
His face was not shown as he is in a witness protection programme.
Munusamy said she did have a scare though when coming out of a shopping centre in 2008 or 2009.
She said when she got to her car she found that all four tyres were flat and this shook her because it had never happened before.
Petrol attendants, who helped her, told her the tyres had not been slashed, and so they inflated them and she went home.
However, it left her feeling anxious and distressed and among the people she called was SA Communist Party secretary-general Blade Nzimande to talk about it.
He said she should report it to the police, but she did not want to go to the police station because she did not think they would take her seriously over deflated tyres.
In her affidavit, Munusamy described herself as a “major” journalist, saying she objected to Naidoo’s testimony about her and wanted to cross-examine him.

“The above allegations are extremely serious and have the potential to destroy my reputation as a reputable journalist.
“Indeed, they have already done considerable damage to my reputation.
“… At the outset, I wish to make it clear that I deny having been involved in any act of corruption, bribery, fraud or money laundering.”
Munusamy denied “knowingly” receiving funds from the secret service account, or knowing that her car was repaired by them, or that the cost of the repairs were being covered by funds from the account.
“I do not know why Colonel Naidoo seeks to malign me in this way.”
She submitted that the commission should not rely on Naidoo’s testimony, and demanded that he supply the documentation that he claimed to have to prove his claims against her.
Munusamy said that between October 2004 and April 2012 she did not work as a journalist, and focused on public relations.
Between 2004 and 2009, she ran her own communications business, doing public relations, media training and political research; from July 2009 to October 2010, she worked at the higher education and training department as communications head.
In 2011, she worked at McCann MSP doing public relations, and returned to journalism, also in 2011, as a sub-editor at the Daily Maverick.
She joined her current employer, Tiso Blackstar, in 2017.
Munusamy stated that after the tyre incident and speaking to Nzimande, she called an acquaintance, Lieutenant General Raymond Lalla who she knew from covering political violence in KwaZulu-Natal.
He expressed concern and said he would get his colleague, Mphego who she had met while covering the Boeremag stories in 2000, to assist.
Mphego called her to say Lalla had spoken to him and she told the story about the deflated tyres again.
Mphego said another police officer would assist her.
Munusamy could not remember if this was the same night or the next day.
She later received a call from a man whose name she does not remember, saying he had been told she was having car trouble, and asked for her address.
He took her car away, and then returned it.
All she remembers of him is that he was an Indian male.
“I will likely be able to confirm this when I see a photograph of him.”
Munusamy let the man take the car for an inspection and trusted him because she trusted Lalla.
“To me the vehicle was returned in the exact same condition in which it left,” she submitted.
“… I stress that I was not aware at all that any money had been spent by anyone – much less crime intelligence – to repair anything on my car.”
Of Mphego, she denied being his confidante or adviser, or anybody’s “confidante” for that matter.
She said she was also never provided with an invoice for any of the supposed work done, and her legal team had not yet been able to obtain a copy of this supposed invoice for the work.
“I value my credibility as a journalist and I am horrified by the allegations that I benefited from being paid by the SSA”.
Munusamy has already denied that crime intelligence paid her car off, saying it was settled by a close family friend, Basheer Ahmed Abdool.
Sport24.co.za | Bosch helps Dolphins take fight to Titans
Cape Town – Eathan Bosch struck a key half-century to help the Dophins take the fight to the Titans on day three of their opening round 4-Day Domestic Series encounter in Centurion on Wednesday.
The fast bowler made exactly 50 (61 balls, 7 fours) as the visitors replied to their hosts’ 441 with 385 at SuperSport Park, before the innings advantage of 56 was stretched to 173 by the close – Mark Boucher’s side progressing to 117 for three.
But with just a day to play, the Titans will have to do extremely well to pull off a win after the men from KwaZulu-Natal tried to take the game to them, thanks to their young 21-year-old rising star.
Not only did Bosch take time out of the game with his innings, but he also claimed the prize wicket of new home captain Grant Thomson (38) in the penultimate over before stumps.
The Dolphins had begun day three in a solid enough position on 188 for three, but they lost Cody Chetty (16) and Prenelan Subrayen (22) early to slip to 214 for five.
Skipper Khaya Zondo (21) was then run out on 250 meaning his side still trailed by nearly 200 and with only four wickets standing.
But, led by Bosch, the tail then wagged handily as Andile Phehlukwayo (32) and Sibonelo Makhanya (47) put on 50 for the seventh wicket, while Daryn Dupavillon (26) helped add 56 for the ninth wicket.
The away side was eventually dismissed in 107.2 overs – Marcello Piedt the pick of the bowlers with four for 61.
In response, Andrea Agathangelou (18) and Tony de Zorzi (27) handed the Titans a 45-run start, with Thomson also chipping in nicely before he fell to Bosch (1/26).
The other two men were taken out by the miserly Okuhle Cele (1/16) and Phehlukwayo (1/42).
But first-innings centurion Neil Brand was still standing on 23 as the Titans closed in a solid position.
News24.com | Tied to a tree, beaten and shot at: Girl, 9, testifies in case against farmers
More than two years since their arrest, the trial of farmers Johannes Potgieter, 33, and Hendrick Dumas, 48, who allegedly handcuffed a 9-year-old girl to a tree before beating her and firing shots at her, is finally under way.
At the start of the trial in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court last week, Potgieter and Dumas pleaded not guilty to several charges.
The girl was the first State witness to take the stand and she is testifying in camera (behind closed doors) because she is a minor.
She continued testifying on Wednesday but members of the media and the public were barred from attending.
READ: Alleged farm assault victim, 9, still too traumatised to give formal statement, court hears
Both farmers have been charged with kidnapping, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and the unlawful pointing of a firearm.
Potgieter faces four charges of attempted murder as he allegedly shot at the victim, her 11-year-old brother and two of their friends.
Dumas faces two attempted murder charges.
The girl’s brother and two friends are also witnesses in the case and are expected to testify in camera if they are called to give evidence.
State’s version
According to the State, the victim and three other children were walking their dogs on September 9, 2017 near Bronkhorstspruit when the dogs ran onto a farm to chase guineafowl.
The children followed the dogs onto the farm where they were allegedly accosted by Dumas and Potgieter. Three of the children escaped, leaving the 9-year-old behind, who was allegedly tied to a tree, shot at and assaulted.
Still tormented by incident
The father of the girl previously told News24 that his daughter was tormented by what happened and asked every day when the trial would be over.
“She is scared that they will come for her again because they are free,” he said.
The girl’s father said she shudders and shivers whenever she sees a white person and hides whenever she passes by the farm where the alleged incident took place.
“If she just sees a white person, she shivers. Their farm is just on the road,” the man said.
The men were initially refused bail. However, they were later released on bail of R3 000 after they succeeded in an appeal to the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria in October 2018.
