Beijing – The 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko dumped world number two Karolina Pliskova out in the first round of the China Open on Saturday despite racking up 25 double faults.
The 22-year-old Latvian emerged after nearly two-and-a-half gruelling hours in Beijing, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
Ostapenko has suffered a dramatic loss of form since her French Open heroics and now languishes 74th in the world.
Both players struggled badly on their serves, in a wildly unpredictable match.
The Czech Pliskova, 27, had been chasing a fifth title this year.
Ostapenko faces Katerina Siniakova, also of the Czech Republic, in the next round in the Chinese capital.

Johannesburg youth have taken a stand against gender-based violence, handing over a memorandum to the city’s leadership.
The solidarity protest, which took place on Saturday in the Johannesburg CBD, was organised by the Johannesburg Student Council Alumni Network (JSC ALNet).
The JSC ALNet is a network of Johannesburg’s future leaders, consisting of high school pupils, students at tertiary institutions and young professionals, who aim to create awareness of the importance of civic responsibility through skills and leadership development.
The protest comes in the wake of reports of the rapes and murders of a number of women.
“As a network of young leaders who will carry the baton we feel our future is facing grave threat from the unjust violence, rape and murder of women in the country,” says Tahir Tayob, JSC’s student mayor.
“The entire country should be on its feet fighting this injustice around the clock and looking for practical solutions that can counter these acts of horror against a vulnerable gender. As JSC ALNet, we decided to not only protest in solidarity with all of the victims of GVB and their families but to also handover a memorandum to the mayor with action items that we would want him to consider and enforce in the city.”
The memorandum was received by City of Johannesburg speaker Vasco da Gama, and called on the City to include “consent to sex” as part of the sexual education of pupils and students, as well as rolling out similar workshop in workplaces.
The memorandum, among other issues it addresses, requested the following from the mayor:
The issuing of “rape whistles” which can be used to call for help during an emergency were also requested in the memorandum.
The JSC ALNet also called for the City or create safe, reliable and trusted centres where women can feel comfortable and protected to report cases of sexual assault, while addressing the challenges that women face when reporting crimes to the police.
Addressing the protestors, Da Gama reportedly said the issue of gender-based violence has been prioritised by the City.
Around 1 000 community members reclaimed Sunnyside’s streets during a march on Friday night.
The march, which started and ended in Jubilee Square, aimed to raise awareness of gender-based violence as well as address community issues such as drug abuse and crime.
In attendance were Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Safety and Security MEC Faith Mazibuko.
During his address to the crowd, captured on social media, Makhura said: “We must reclaim our streets… Day and night it must be safe for all the women of our country. We are not going to allow criminals to scare our people into their homes.”
Ward councillor Godfrey Mulaudzi says the group walked to areas known for crime and sex work, ending at Gerard Moerdyk Street. The street is home to a notorious crime hotspot, an abandoned building dubbed “the White House” by locals.
Although many crimes are fuelled by alleged drug activity at this site, says Mulaudzi, the march also aimed to address community-wide issues such as drug abuse and domestic violence.
