News24.com | Buthelezi takes on Cele in Parliament debate about xenophobic violence
Veteran IFP MP Mangosuthu Buthelezi used a debate on the wave of violence to defend himself and his party against Police Minister Bheki Cele’s criticism that they contributed to Sunday’s violence in Johannesburg.
News24 earlier reported that a group of men, some of them wielding sticks, pangas and tree branches, marched through the city centre after disrupting a meeting which Buthelezi addressed following last week’s deadly xenophobic violence.
One person was stabbed on the corner of Bree and Plein streets.
As the violence split over to Malvern, another person was shot dead on Sunday night.
Cele on Monday told SABC’s On Point that the planned meeting was called off and that he was “taken aback” to learn that the meeting continued with Buthelezi.
“To us, it was a political party meeting, and unfortunately it came up with this upswing of the violence after the meeting,” Cele told the SABC.
Buthelezi, in whose name Tuesday’s debate in the National Assembly was introduced, took exception to Cele’s remarks.
“In the midst of a crisis, leaders must act,” Buthelezi started.
“We are in a crisis. As our nation grapples with the horror of gender-based violence, a new wave of xenophobic attacks has washed over South Africa. Lives have been lost and property damaged. There has been looting and burning and violence.”
He said he went to Johannesburg on Sunday to speak to his fellow South Africans, “not to take sides, but to quell the tensions with the voice of truth”.
“I stated very clearly that I was there, not as a politician, but as an elder. I was there for the sake of my country.”
He said the night before the meeting, bottle stores were looted and “several angry township and hostel residents arrived still inebriated”.
“They were in no mood to hear a message of peace or to be reminded of our Constitution.”
According to Buthelezi, he informed Cele that he will be going, and Cele offered to arrange security.
“So I am dumb-struck by the minister’s comment yesterday that he is ‘taken aback’ by my visit to Johannesburg, as though what I did was political posturing,” Buthelezi said.
“The insinuation is there that, had I not gone to Johannesburg, the looting and violence that took place on Sunday would not have happened.”
Buthelezi said he wasn’t there to score political points.
“I am too old for political games,” Buthelezi said.
“I have been vilified for too long to speak diplomatically. I am sick of the IFP being cast as responsible for violence, either obliquely or directly.”
Cele closed the debate.
He said Sunday’s meeting was originally planned as a government meeting and he liaised with indunas at the hostel, but after he received a complaint from King Goodwill Zwelithini that he wasn’t consulted, but only indunas, he cancelled the meeting.
“It’s not that I’m looking down on you,” Cele said to Buthelezi.
News24.com | Xenophobia: Agony, grief and fear stalks shelter set up for foreign nationals in Katlehong
Agony and grief are visibly stamped on the faces of displaced foreign nationals at a temporary shelter in Ekurhuleni, a week after they fled their homes in Katlehong.
When News24 visited the Tsolo Community Hall in Katlehong on Tuesday, scores of homeless migrants sat around in groups, while young children chased after soccer balls. A few women plaited each other’s hair as others tried to get their toddlers to take a midday nap.
The DH Community Hall in Katlehong is also being used as a temporary shelter.
Xenophobic attacks led to 624 adults and 227 children fleeing their homes as violence and looting aimed at foreign nationals took a foothold in the suburb last week.
“My life if priceless. I am not prepared to die for nothing,” Zimbabwean national Lawrence Dondo told News24.
Dondo fled the backroom he was renting in Mandela Section in Katlehong last Wednesday after a mob ordered all foreigners to leave.

“I was with my wife and our one-year-old daughter when the mob arrived armed with guns, sticks and other dangerous weapons. They ordered us to leave Mandela Section for good because we are not wanted in Katlehong. We then fled to a nearby bush, where we were joined by other foreigners.
“We spent the night in the bush, praying for our safety. It was cold and wet, and there was nothing we could do because South Africa is not our home. The following day, my wife and child went to Leondale, where they are staying with her father,” he said, wiping away tears.
The following night, Dondo added, they moved to a safe place, also in the bush, where locals spotted them and launched an attack.
“Fortunately, the police arrived and opened fire on the group, chasing them away. On Friday morning, we moved to this hall. Here our movements are monitored for our safety.
“We are not allowed to walk far from this shelter, there is a fear that the locals will attack us again. We are prisoners here and we can’t go back to our homes in Mandela Section. As soon as the situation is calm, I will go back to Zimbabwe and return to South Africa in January next year, find a safer place in South Africa to stay and find employment,” he said.
Dondo’s friend and fellow Zimbabwean, Ephraim Yezo, is looking for his uncle, Obvious Matereke, who was last seen on Wednesday night.
Mob gave us three hours to vacate
“We had both returned home from work when a mob gave us three hours to vacate the area. While trying to grab our belongings, they opened fire with guns and we fled empty handed.
“That was the last time I saw my uncle. I don’t know whether he is alive or dead. His cellphone is off and I don’t know where he fled to. I hope he was not killed and is somewhere safe waiting to reconnect with me,” said Yezo.
Inside the hall, Aida Chisi from Malawi sits alone, holding her one-year-old daughter, Precious. She said September 4 will remain with her forever.
“We have lost everything, including our papers. I think we are safe here for now because the police are patrolling outside. I don’t know if my company will take me back again. I need to make money to feed my daughter.
“My husband has been informed that some of our colleagues don’t want to work with foreigners again. We are not wanted here in this country. I am afraid to go back to work because they will kill me,” Chisi said.

Harriet Phiri from Malawi told News24 she and her friends spent the night at Katlehong police station last Wednesday after their homes were attacked.
“We have lost everything we owned. They even stole all the items I had prepared to take home to Malawi to sell. I am not worried about everything I have lost because they can’t replace my life. My life has no price.
“All the things I have lost, I will replace them one day but my life is irreplaceable. I could have been killed for being a foreigner who has not committed any offence,” said Phiri.
Ekurhuleni emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi said it was offering shelter, food, water, security and medical attention to the displaced.
Ntladi said Home Affairs officials, various embassies, Doctors Without Borders, the International Organisation for Migration, local paramedics, police and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department have joined hands to assist them.
He added some of them were being assisted with documentation to return back to their countries.
“We are assisting with everything we can, and there are some that we have taken to hospital for medical attention upon inspection by our paramedics,” said Ntladi.
Sport24.co.za | Proteas looking to build to the future
Cape Town – Proteas team director Enoch Nkwe believes that it’s about time South Africa look to the future.
The Proteas are currently in India with wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock leading the T20 side, while Faf du Plessis will remain Test captain ahead of the three-match series that follows the T20 matches.
Last month, CSA acting director of cricket Corrie van Zyl revealed that Du Plessis still remains an integral part of the Proteas T20 squad.
Nkwe believes that in appointing De Kock, the Proteas are looking ahead to the future.
“It’s an opportunity to start building for the future, we know where Faf stands as a captain and player,” said Nkwe on Tuesday in India.
“He has done great things for South African cricket so we need to look at what the future looks like. We strongly believe in Quinton, who is going to lead the team going forward into the series.”
The Proteas come off a disappointing World Cup campaign which saw them finish 7th overall.
Nkwe, who is taking part in his first assignment since accepting the team director role, says that the Proteas are determined to win in India.
“If you look at the guys, we got good enough experience from a guy like Quinton, who has played a lot of games in India, and we have some new blood in,” said Nkwe.
“We will remain competitive and want to walk away with a series win. The entire squad is very determined, we are here to win and we understand that our opposition is strong in their own backyard but we’re going to give 100 percent.”
The first T20 gets underway on Sunday at 15:30 SA time.
Proteas T20I squad v India:
Quinton de Kock (Titans, captain), Rassie van der Dussen (Highveld Lions, vice-captain), Temba Bavuma (Highveld Lions), Junior Dala (Titans), Bjorn Fortuin (Highveld Lions), Beuran Hendricks (Highveld Lions), Reeza Hendricks (Highveld Lions), David Miller (Dolphins), Anrich Nortje (Warriors), Andile Phehlukwayo (Dolphins), Dwaine Pretorius (Highveld Lions), Kagiso Rabada (Highveld Lions), Tabraiz Shamsi (Titans), George Linde (Cape Cobras)

Health24.com | Reach out – 5 tips on how to support someone who may be suicidal
There is no single cause for suicide, although depression is cited as the most common associated condition. And while there has been progress in national suicide prevention strategies in some countries within the past five years, much more is needed.
The total number of countries with suicide prevention activities stands at a low 38, notes the World Health Organization (WHO), and governments need to step up.
“Despite progress, one person still dies every 40 seconds from suicide,” said WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“Every death is a tragedy for family, friends and colleagues. Yet suicides are preventable. We call on all countries to incorporate proven suicide prevention strategies into national health and education programmes in a sustainable way.”
The facts are worrying:
- There are approximately 23 suicides a day in South Africa.
- South Africa also has the sixth highest rate of suicide in Africa.
- South African men are said to be more likely to commit suicide than women.
- Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29 year olds globally.
- 79% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
If a friend or family member mentions suicide or self-harm, take them seriously.
Spot the danger signs
Suicide warning signs usually include:
- Talking about suicide
- Seeking access to lethal means, such as guns, knives, pills, etc.
- Feeling hopeless or anxious
- Self-destructive behaviour such as alcohol and/or drug abuse
- Getting affairs in order, including drawing up a will and giving away possessions
Always take a disclosure of suicidal thoughts seriously. It is a myth that people who talk about suicide are less likely to follow through with it, or are simply doing it in an attempt to seek attention.
For a complete guide on suicide awareness guide, check out this list.
Talk openly and initiate dialogue in a non-judgemental way
Don’t try to argue with the person. Instead, empathise with their expressed emotions: try to listen to what they’re saying to you, and, most importantly, avoid interrupting them until you are certain that they are finished. Be compassionate and make it known that you are there to listen.
Try to keep them distracted and socialised
Try to keep your loved one occupied by giving them engaging and constructive things to do. A suicidal person will often feel hopeless, helpless and isolated. Encourage them to contact their local GP, local counselling service or an anonymous phone line such as the Suicide Crisis Line or the LifeLine crisis service (see contact information below).
Suggest adopting a pet
Research has shown that pets can help reduce stress anxiety and depression, although veterinary social worker Dr Magdie van Heerden says that there is no standard intervention with therapeutic animals that will work for everyone.
“Each case of depression needs to be treated differently and an emotional support dog can play a significant role in the treatment process.”
A pet alone may not prevent suicide, but can provide healing. However, van Heerden cautions that these animals are not therapeutic tools to be used only when needed, as they too experience stress and their quality of life also needs to be considered.
Stay connected
Even after your loved one has sought help and seems to be on a healthy path to healing, encourage others to check in on them during this vulnerable time. Many suicides occur during a period of apparent improvement, so never underestimate this step.
For a suicidal emergency call the South African Depression and Anxiety Group on 0800 567 567. Their 24-hour helpline is 0800 12 13 14.
LifeLine, a free counselling service also offers a free counselling line and can be contacted on 021 461 1111 or via their WhatsApp call on 063 709 2620.
*September 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day – a day dedicated to raising awareness of the risks of suicide and the challenges faced when trying to prevent death by suicide.
