News24.com | 1 in 10 people believe husband has right to physically attack partner – Ipsos poll
At least one in every 10 South Africans believe men have the right to physically attack their partners or wives.
This is according to an Ipsos poll, following face-to-face interviews with 3 600 people across the country earlier this year.
Ipsos examined opinions surrounding a woman’s place in marital relations and violence toward women.
More than six in 10 people believed a woman should obey her husband or partner, which Ipsos remarked illustrated a “deep-seated paternalism and conservative view in our society, seeing a woman as a possession rather than an individual in her own right”.
Slightly more women than men agreed with the statement, according to the findings.
Younger people were slightly less likely to agree. In the 15 to 17 age group, 51% agreed.
While the majority – 78% – did not agree that a husband had the right to physically attack his partner, levels of agreement that physical abuse was acceptable was still “alarmingly high”, Ipsos said.
Levels of disagreement were highest when subjects thought about themselves as individuals, but decreased when it came to their opinion of what the community thought.
The information was gathered between March 22 and April 17 following 3 600 interviews with randomly selected respondents.

Health24.com | Heart attack risk much higher for people who sleep too little – or too much
Studies have shown that if you’re a long-term couch potato, your heart health may be at risk. The same goes for people who eat too much fast food.
Now, a new study has found that if you’re not sleeping enough, or sleeping more than you should, you may face the risk of a heart attack.
More isn’t always better
A study by the University of Colorado Boulder on nearly half a million people found that even if you’re a non-smoker and you have no genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease, the amount of sleep you get can have an impact your heart attack risk. The study, published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, found that sleeping between six and nine hours a night could offset the risk.
In the study, authors looked at the genetic information, self-reported habits and the medical records of 461 000 UK Biobank participants between the ages of 40 and 69 who had never had a heart attack and followed them over a period of seven years.
In comparison to participants who slept six to nine hours a night, participants who got fewer than six hours of sleep were 20% more likely to have a heart attack during the period of study. Surprisingly, participants who slept for more than nine hours a night were 34% more likely to have a heart attack. Researchers also looked at people with a genetic predisposition to heart disease and found that sleeping between six to nine hours a night cut their risk of having a heart attack by 18%.
A healthy amount
Celine Vetter, assistant professor of Integrative Physiology and senior author of the study said, “This provides some of the strongest proof yet that sleep duration is a key factor when it comes to heart health, and this holds true for everyone.” Lead author Iyas Daghlas added, “It’s kind of a hopeful message, that regardless of what your inherited risk for heart attack is, sleeping a healthy amount may cut that risk just like eating a healthy diet, not smoking, and other lifestyle approaches can.”
Sleep and heart health were always associated in previous research, but due to the fact that most studies were observational – looking at different groups to see who would develop disease – it was more difficult to determine whether it was poor sleep which caused heart problems or whether heart problems were the result of poor sleep.
Contributing factors
In the new study, researchers used the UK Biobank dataset and combined observational as well as genetic research in order to ask the questions in a different way. A total of 30 other factors were looked at and included:
- Body composition
- Physical activity
- Socioeconomic status
- Mental health
It was found that sleep duration influenced heart attack risk independently of these factors.
People who fell out of the six to nine hour range had a more increased risk of a heart attack. People who slept five hours per night had a 52% higher risk of a heart attack than those who slept seven to eight hours. Participants who slept 10 hours a night were twice as likely to have a heart attack. Researchers found that genetically influenced short sleep duration was also a risk factor for a heart attack.
The study did not look into the mechanisms by which sleep duration may boost a heart attack risk.

News24.com | Mboweni’s plan gets nod from ANC caucus as it acknowledges economy has stalled
Acknowledging that the South African economy has stagnated, the ANC parliamentary caucus welcomed Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s economic strategy blueprint to boost growth and create jobs.
Discussing the outcome of the ANC parliamentary caucus’s lekgotla, which was held this weekend, ANC chief whip Pemmy Majodina described the plan Mboweni released two weeks ago as a “draft document that encourages debate”.
She said the ANC caucus welcomed it.
“The lekgotla welcomed the initiative by the government to start a national conversation on how to boost the South African economy in the short term,” Majodina added.
“The economic transformation cluster will lead this national conversation as it affects all South Africans. Furthermore, we call on all South Africans to contribute to this very important discussion.”
She said the lekgotla welcomed the policy certainty displayed by the government, in particular, the policy direction for the licensing of the high demand spectrum, which was approved by the Cabinet.
“The lekgotla noted concerns about the implementation of reforms in visa regulations, which are crucial for boosting the tourism sector in our country.
“It acknowledged that the South African economy has stagnated,” Majodina said.
She added the caucus had resolved that the ANC in Parliament would “move with greater vigour to ensure that the government implements decisive policy measures to reignite inclusive growth and create jobs”.
While the ANC caucus welcomed Mboweni’s document, the ANC’s alliance partners, Cosatu and the SACP, expressed their dissatisfaction with the plan.
Mboweni’s 77-page report was released on the National Treasury’s website on August 27.
Many of the proposed reforms draw on existing proposals in other documents, including the National Development Plan.
Sport24.co.za | Pienaar delighted to get second Currie Cup chance
Cape Town – Veteran Cheetahs scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar admits he never thought he’d get another chance to play in a Currie Cup final.
The Cheetahs claimed a 31-28 victory in Bloemfontein on Saturday to be crowned 2019 Currie Cup champions, and for Pienaar it was second bite at the cherry he never thought he’d get.
The former Springbok only recently returned to South Africa after spending nearly 10 years in Europe.
“The last one was in 2008 and I thought then I’d never get a chance to win the Currie Cup again,” he told Iol.co.za.
“It was a great first-half performance (that got us over the line) and it’s a special one.”
The Cheetahs’ achievement was made all the more impressive by the fact that only 12 months ago they had to come through a promotion-relegation match to secure their status in the Premier Division.
It was a fact not lost on coach Franco Smith.
“To think where we were a year ago … we played promotion relegation, but we worked our way back,” he said.
“This is another important brick in the wall, another stepping stone, of what we’re building here.”
As for Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen, he was left to wonder what might have been had his side not made such a poor start.
The Cheetahs built up a massive 31-7 lead in the first half before the Lions hit back by winning the second half 21-0.
Unfortunately for them, it still wasn’t enough.
“Of course, I’m disappointed, but I’m also proud of the way the guys fought back,” he said. “There’s so much character in them.
“This will be huge for these players’ careers. Some players never get an opportunity of playing in a final, so they’ll learn a lot from this.
“It was great to see the young guys fighting for something they believe in. Every game was a fight for us this year and I’m proud of that spirit.”
