Interesting job this one
You’d be replacing a core Technologist moving onto another project within the business. The gig is perfect for leaders of developers who want to code – this is hands-on work.
The role is within the R&D and development arm of a major end-user. You would (amongst other things) be consulting back to the business on technology, identifying gaps or opportunities, conceptualising technical products/platforms that evolve the business, leading those initiatives and then jumping into more vanilla execution teams to teach them how to do what you do.
This is a role that blends the respect for compliance that the large financial institutions legally must obey with the fearlessness in tech needed for a Fintech shop. You will find yourself in a high influence gig; in a business that wants your opinion; working with a team of very strong specialists. You will find yourself playing a mixed hand of futurist with infrastructure optimisation.
You’ll need some heavyweight experience behind you to be able to deliver in this one:
- You’ll need those years you’ve spent as a technical architect in other environments.
- You’ll also find yourself needing the technical leadership skills you’ve gained; to be fair this role will demand project leadership skills as well.
- You’ll find that your colleagues/peers are stereotypically people who got bored in operational leadership roles because they’re tech geeks themselves.
- Without a doubt, you will find yourself needing to manage business people who don’t grasp your world.
- I’d expect you to need some sales skills as you drive your own concepts back into the environment.
You will need absolute confidence in your own tech skills:
Imposter syndrome exists; it’s fine to not know things but you’re core technical pain short term will be:
- .NET Core – C#
- ASP.NET Core with Razor
- Azure – a variety of elements within the platform
- You’re going to need either enterprise experience in that tech OR serious depth in your own personal work
It would help you immensely if you already understood:
- Banking generally – at least, you will need some understanding of the challenges legal compliance brings
- Continuous delivery
- Agile – Safe or Scrum
- API Architecture or full-on Micro Services – Docker/Kubernetes
- OOP/DDD/Service Fabric
- Broader Cloud experience outside of just Azure (not really NB but it would help you)
I’m comfortable having a confidential chat with you about this, I’m easy to find at
az.oc.egrem-e@mdegroeg

UCT names next chancellor
Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe has been elected as the next chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT), effective 1 January 2020.
In making the announcement, UCT’s chair of council, Sipho Pityana commented: “The university is privileged to have Dr Moloi-Motsepe serve as the chancellor of one of the leading institutions in the country and on the African continent. On behalf of UCT, I would like to thank the outgoing chancellor, Mrs Graça Machel for serving the university with remarkable distinction and great commitment for two 10-year terms, which spanned complex moments and incredible milestones.”
Moloi-Motsepe is a businesswoman and philanthropist who started her career in medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). She worked in various public hospitals in South Africa as well as at the Medical College of Virginia in the United States. Together with her husband, Dr Patrice Motsepe, she founded the Motsepe Foundation in 1999, and in 2013 they became the first couple from Africa to join The Giving Pledge.
In addition to its development work in South Africa and across the African continent, the foundation has international partnerships with the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, the Harvard Kennedy School, the Milken Institute and various other philanthropic organisations. Moloi-Motsepe established African Fashion International (AFI) in 2007. AFI’s mission is to aggregate the fragmented fashion and clothing industry on the African continent in order to make it commercially viable and sustainable.
The chancellor is the titular head of the university and presides at graduation ceremonies, confers degrees, and awards diplomas and certificates in the name of the university. The role of chancellor requires an individual of stature with exceptional personal qualities and integrity.
Moloi-Motsepe holds an MBBCh and a diploma in child health from Wits, as well as a diploma in women’s health from Stellenbosch University. She authored a resource guide for women across South Africa, The Precious Little Black Book, and has produced the Gender Responsive Budgeting Initiative South Africa.
Her professional associations include the Harvard Kennedy School’s Women’s Leadership Board and Centre for Public Leadership Council, the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council, and the Cancer Association of South Africa (past president).

Magashule was a ‘blesser to many’, Dukwana tells state capture inquiry
Former Free State economic development MEC Mxolisi Dukwana labelled ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule a “blesser to many” for allegedly sourcing money from the public purse through an asbestos auditing contract.
Dukwana told the state capture inquiry on Wednesday: “Mr Magashule was simply a blesser to many due to payments advanced by Mr [Ignatius] Mpambani from monies corruptly and fraudulently sourced from state coffers through the asbestos project.”
Mpambani was gunned down and killed in broad daylight while driving his Bentley in Sandton in 2017. He was one of the main beneficiaries of the controversial contract to “audit” and “assess” houses with asbestos roofs in the Free State.

‘Magashule should be behind bars’, Dukwana tells state capture inquiry
Former Free State economic development MEC Mxolisi Dukwana has told the state capture inquiry ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule is not fit for office following his alleged involvement in the asbestos eradication project.
Dukwana was testifying before inquiry chairperson Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo on Wednesday.
“I submit that the involvement of Mr Magashule in this asbestos audit heist makes him unfit to hold public office or the office of the SG of the ANC,” he claimed.

Nxasana’s ‘golden handshake’ not what it seems, Zondo commission hears
A concerted campaign against former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss Mxolisi Nxasana to oust him from his position culminated in him conceding he would only go if he was paid out for the remainder of his term.
Nxasana, who was testifying at the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture on Monday, spoke about the two-year battle with now disgraced former NPA officials Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi who were gunning for his job.
He also detailed his struggle to get former president Jacob Zuma on his side.
While Nxasana said it was difficult to meet with Zuma – at one point resorting to pulling his lawyer over on the side of the N1 highway – he repeatedly told Zuma there was “a campaign” against him at the NPA involving Jiba and Mrwebi who were also misleading Zuma with rumours.

Jiba and Mrwebi peddled misinformation to Zuma – former NPA head testifies
Former National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Mxolisi Nxasana claims former president Jacob Zuma knew about an “orchestrated” campaign against him in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), led by Nomgcobo Jiba, Lawrence Mrwebi and Sibongile Mzinyathi.
Testifying at the state capture commission of inquiry on Monday, Nxasana detailed his efforts to compel Zuma to intervene in what he called interference in the NPA by the former officials.
As part of this, Nxasana told the commission that Jiba and Mrwebi peddled misinformation to Zuma that Nxasana was going to reinstate charges against him. However, Nxasana said he never intended to do this.
Despite Nxasana’s efforts to arrange a meeting between himself and Zuma to clarify the issue, Zuma was not interested in seeing him, he said.

Sport24.co.za | Griquas boss backs Cheetahs for Currie Cup
Cape Town – Outgoing Griquas boss Brent Janse van Rensburg believes that the Free State Cheetahs will have too much for the Golden Lions in Saturday’s Currie Cup final in Bloemfontein.
Griquas lost 34-19 to the Lions in their semi-final on Saturday afternoon before a late flurry from the Cheetahs saw them down the Sharks 51-30.
Janse van Rensburg, who is on his way to Durban to be the Sharks’ forwards coach for Super Rugby 2020, believes that Free State will be the side to beat in the final.
“They have played together in the PRO14 and are a close unit,” he was quoted as saying on Netwerk24.
“There is also more experience in their team.
“The Lions have exciting individual players with x-factor, but I think as a unit they still come up a little short and Free State will be the favourites on their home ground as well.
“When you play at home it definitely gives you an advantage in those high-pressure situations.”
Golden Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen, meanwhile, acknowledges that the trip to Bloemfontein will be a tough ask but that his side could take heart from their 24-22 win there in the group stages back on August 2.
“They’re a very good team and a tough team,” he said.
“We’ll get back on Monday and restart our processes … we’ll just work hard and it’s an amazing opportunity for us.”
Kick-off on Saturday is at 17:00.
