News24.com | KZN municipal speaker survives 11 gunshots to his vehicle in assassination attempt
Ukhahlamba Municipal Speaker Sthembiso Zulu has survived an assassination attempt, the Kwazulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) department said on Tuesday.
Provincial Cogta spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said the speaker was apparently shot at, while on the way home from work.
“The municipal vehicle he was using was shot at eleven times. The Speaker escaped with minor injuries.”
Kwazulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said she was not aware at present of the attempt.
In May, Zulu shared his terror after two Metro cops were killed while guarding his house in Durban.
He told the Daily Sun he had not been able to sleep at night. The newspaper reported that the municipality posted the police to his place last year when residents started protesting outside it.
Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka was shocked at the latest attack and said the recent spate of violence directed at public representatives in municipalities should stop.
“We are dismayed at the news of an attempt on the life of yet another councillor in the province, shortly as the province is still licking its wounds following the brutal assassination of councillor Mthembeni Majola from Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality in the same district,” he said.
News24 reported that Majola, an Inkatha Freedom Party councillor, was shot dead in an apparent hit on Friday night.
KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said suspects had opened fire on Majola’s vehicle travelling on the R103 at Hospital Hill in Estcourt.
Majola, who was driving, sustained multiple wounds and died on the scene.
According to Gwala, the two passengers in the car were rushed to hospital to be treated for injuries.
“It pains me to even try and understand what could cause people to embark on such a senseless deed against a representative of our people. This is indeed shocking. We are finding this difficult to comprehend,” said Hlomuka.
He said violence against councillors was becoming a disturbing trend that required urgent attention.
He hoped that those responsible would be apprehended and brought to book.

Health24.com | How the timing of meals can influence heart attack recovery
When you eat during the day could influence your chances of surviving a heart attack, a new study finds.
Specifically, skipping breakfast and eating dinner late in the evening were associated with poorer recovery and increased risk of death, scientists report.
Dangers of breakfast skipping
“Our research shows that the two eating behaviours are independently linked with poorer outcomes after a heart attack, but having a cluster of bad habits will only make things worse,” said study author Dr Marcos Minicucci, from Sao Paolo State University in Brazil.
“People who work late may be particularly susceptible to having a late supper and then not being hungry in the morning,” he noted.
The study included 113 heart attack patients, average age 60, who were asked about their eating habits when being admitted to a coronary intensive care unit.
Those with a pattern of skipping breakfast and eating dinner late in the evening had a four to five times higher risk of death, another heart attack or angina (chest pain) within 30 days after leaving the hospital.
A pattern of breakfast skipping was defined as eating nothing before lunch – other than beverages such as coffee and water – at least three times per week. A pattern of late dinners was defined as having a meal within two hours before bedtime at least three times per week.
Late dinner
Of the patients in the study, 58% were breakfast skippers, 51% were late-night dinner eaters, and 41% did both.
However, the study only found an association and not a cause-and-effect link between eating patterns and cardiac outcomes. It was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
The patients in the study had a particularly serious type of heart attack called ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
“One in 10 patients with STEMI dies within a year, and nutrition is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to improve prognosis,” Minicucci said in a journal news release.
Previous studies have found that people who skip breakfast and have a late dinner are more likely to have other unhealthy habits such as smoking and low levels of physical activity.
Statins not a panacea
“We also think that the inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and endothelial function could be involved in the association between unhealthy eating behaviours and cardiovascular outcomes,” Minicucci added.
He noted that in the study, patients with unhealthy eating habits and worse outcomes were more likely to have used cholesterol-lowering statins before their heart attack.
“There are some controversies regarding eating habits of patients using statins. Our study suggests that patients with STEMI perceive statins as an alternative path to health benefits. But these drugs should be an addition to healthy eating habits, not a replacement,” Minicucci said.

News24.com | Thabethe unclear what expertise Paras brought to dairy project, commission hears
It is unclear what expertise Indian dairy producer Paras brought to the Vrede dairy project.
Testifying at the state capture commission of inquiry, the former head of the Free State department of agriculture, Peter Thabethe, said he was not sure what exactly the company had brought with them from India.
“There was a stage when they indicated that there was a vet on site, but I am not really sure exactly what expertise overall,” Thabethe told the commission.
He added: “I think Dr [Tskisi] Mastieng would have maybe known exactly what expertise was on site.”
This is despite Thabethe’s previous testimony that the department had brought Paras on board because they possessed the required expertise which the project needed in dairy production.
Commission head Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo was quick to point this out.
“Part of my concern is that the size of this project and the money that the department was going to put into it were such that I would have thought that, as head of department, you would have wanted to establish whether the expertise that you so much wanted to have from Paras, was the expertise that came.”
He added: “At a certain stage I would have thought that you would want to go inspect and see how everything was like, and see that everything was as contemplated in the plan…”
Zondo said this was something deserving of a head of department’s attention who had placed himself as one of the project leaders.
Previous evidence from Vrede businessman Willie Basson indicated he was unhappy with what Paras had to offer.
Basson said he was disappointed with the three Indian nationals who had not brought any equipment with them to do their job.
He added the quality of the materials brought from India were second hand, of bad quality and rusted.
Thabethe, however, said he had not heard anything about substandard materials.
“Myself personally, I did not go verify each and every stage when people were coming to say, ‘is it indeed the people we expected that were coming’.
“Maybe because I had confidence in the team I was working with, because I understood that if there was any problem [they would say so],” Thabethe explained.
Despite his leadership role within the project, Thabethe seemingly had little idea of what was happening on the farm.
When the Free State development corporation took over as implementing agent from Estina, the commission heard, there was still little due diligence done beforehand, and afterwards, little oversight over its work.
Thabethe, however, maintained this was untrue because they were provided with reports from the implementing agent, which would then be used for verification purposes.

Sport24.co.za | Jantjies says Boks have ‘right system’ ahead of RWC
Cape Town – Springbok flyhalf Elton Jantjies revealed that the side have developed the “right systems” in order to be successful at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.
South Africa are in Pool B at the showcase tournament with defending champions New Zealand, Canada, Italy and Namibia.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus will name his 31-man World Cup squad on Monday, August 26 with Jantjies expected to make the team.
“I know we have had different coaches, but we as individuals have come a long way,” Jantjies told Reuters.
“From my personal point of view, I think we now have the right system, defensively and in our kicking game, as well as from an attacking point of view.
“Everybody is aligned in terms of that. It is just for you as an individual do your role in the system.”
Jantjies also touched on the departure of assistant coach Swys de Bruin, after he left the Springbok camp just over a month out from the World Cup.
“We had a lot of time with coach Swys, even though he has now left. But we are all able to speak the same language, so he did enough. We are definitely going to do something special for him at the World Cup because he played a big role in terms of our preparation,” said Jantjies.
The Springboks kick-off their campaign against the All Blacks on Saturday, September 21 in Yokohama City.
